Jerry Brisco - VP of GCW in early 1980's?
Apr 12th, 2009, 2:53pm

I was watching a DVD of GCW this weekend and there was a segment with Gordon Solie, Jerry Brisco and Mayor Andrew Young. Jerry Brisco was introduced as VP of Georgia Championship Wrestling. Does anyone on here know the details of what his role was and was this just an on screen role or did he actually have ownership in the promotion. What was interesting is the fact that while he was in an administrative role in Georgia, he was wrestling full time for Jim Crockett's Mid Atlantic promotion.

Ever heard of Black Saturday? July 14, 1984

Jack and Jerry Brisco, majority stockholders in GCW (so it's not hard to believe Jerry was actually VP,) sold their stock to Vince McMahon allowing WWF to takeover the Saturday night timeslot on TBS.

Yes, I have it on DVD and I remember seeing it on TBS when it aired. Sad day and I had no clue what it would mean to the wrestling industry going forward.

The segment with Gordon, Jerry and Mayor Young seemed very authentic so it would make sense that Jerry had an officers role with the promotion. Regardless of them selling their shares to Vince, I'm still a huge mark for the Briscos. And it was sad that both of them retired shortly thereafter. Their battles in Mid Atlantic against Steamboat and Youngblood were tremendous. I guess both of them didn't need the money and went out on top. After watching some of their last matches, it appeared that both of them had several good years left and they appeared to hit their stride in 82-84.

Yes, it was a sad day. I thought the Briscos explained it very well at their Q&A at our November 2004 fanfest weekend. They saw the business moving towards Vince's more national approach, and obviously felt WWF had a better chance of doing that than GCW. Gosh, we all wish they had thought otherwise.

I can't condone what The Briscoes did.  If you read Ole Anderson's autobiography you know that the Briscoes did the deal with Vince McMahon when Ole went to Minnesota for his mother's funeral.  To take advantage of Ole being gone for his mother's funeral and use that to sell GCW to Vince is just so low.  Lower than a snake's belly.  You'd think that especially Jack Briscoe with his amateur credentials would have had some more loyalty to the NWA which featured wrestling that was much closer based to the amateur style and more athletic in nature than WWWF which was mostly just big guys kicking and stomping.

GCW had nationwide coverage on The Superstation.  They could have gone national just as easily as Vince, and they actually had a head start because they had been on the Superstation nationwide for years.  If the promoters in The NWA had just stuck together, there's no way that Vince could have competed against GCW, JCP, and Florida Wrestling combined.  And that wasn't nearly all of The NWA but if even those three promoters had stuck together and worked as a team against the McMahon's they would have been unstoppable.

Does anyone know who has The Georgia Championship Wrestling Tape library?  I've never seen any Georgia Championship Wrestling episodes shown on WWE 24/7.

I agree about GCW, which at that point, was called World Championship Wrestling, was in a great position to go national and to be honest, was already slowly moving in that direction. Of course, Atlanta was still the home base but they started touring Ohio, WV, and other places outside of the Georgia area in 1981 or 1982 I think.
Had Mid-Atlantic, Florida, Bill Watts' Mid South and GCW combined forces, Vince would not have stood a chance, so long as egos between the the other guys not gotten in the way.
But, we will never know.

As cantankerous as Ole Anderson is in real life, I do respect him for never being a part of the WWF/WWE circus. It's not wrestling at all, rather, as Vince calls it - Sports Entertainment.  I was watching a DVD earlier from GCW, dated August 12, 1982. Paul Orndorff and Super Destroyer had a great 10 minute match that went to a draw. That area was so hot in the early 80's. Buzz Sawyer was feuding with Orndorff, Ole and Stan Hansen were world tag champs.

Magnificent Muraco was in the area along with Roddy Piper who was slowly turning babyface. Tommy Rich was still going strong. The Freebirds were National Tag Champs. Sonny King was managing the Wild Samoans. Man, even the show itself with jobbers getting creamed had more action than anything I've seen the last 25 years plus.
