Boris Malenko-how good was he?
May 6th, 2009, 4:36pm

Hi all,
I've read things in the past that said Boris Malenko was one of the best promo guys in the history of Florida wrestling. I've only heard two or three audio clips of him, but none of them really blew me away. Was he really that good on the stick?
Also, his sons, Joe & Dean, are obviously two tremendously gifted technical wrestlers. Was Boris as technically sound in the ring? Just to look at him, he looked more like a typical "punch-kick-choke-bite" style of heel.
Just curious as to what anyone else's thoughts on him are. Thanks!

You have to remeber that promos in the 60's/70's were not scripted as the ones now days are. It was mostly imprompto stuff - on the fly. People believed more then. Boris was a more technical wrestler early in his career, but like most guys, as age and his injuries caught up with him, he had to work more as his body would allow. If you could ask some of the guys that he worked, I feel sure they would tell you has was a heckuva worker/wrestler. There's a big difference in knowing how to wrestle and knowing how to work. Along the years, there were not many who could do both equally well. And thats ok too.

I certainly agree with you on the whole "promo" aspect, Mr. Spence. The ones today are so convoluted and bland. I've seen my fair share of old Mid-Atlantic promos with guys like Flair, Mulligan, Andersons, etc. and they showed more heart and emotion in a 90-second promo than most anyone of today's "Monday nighters" could even dream about giving.
And also, I don't want anyone to think that I'm knocking Boris at all or doubting his legacy as I've always heard nothing but great things about him, both in & out of the ring. I guess I was just curious as to what other people's opinions of him were.

for what its worth during the promotional war between eddie Graham and Boris ,eddie made several comments about the opposition on tv.Boris offered to wrestle Graham for charity then Eddie was injured in a storyline.Boris offered his condolences and offered for Him and either of his sons to wrestle Mike and Dusty Rhodes. It was never mentioned again on Grahams tv show.Everyone I talked to has said Boris could hold his own with anyone including Karl Gotch who helped train at his school

Whichever name he used - - THE GREAT MALENKO, PROFESSOR MALENKO, BORIS MALENKO or LARRY SIMON - - he was the REAL DEAL!

Hopefully, time will never diminish his incredible career.
