Impact 1/4/10

Did anyone hear watch it, and watch Raw at the same time?  Raw was well Raw.  Seeing Bret and Shawn in the middle of the ring was something I didn't think I'd ever see again.  Hopefully their was some sort of truth to the two of them putting Montreal  behind them.

Anyways I wanted to discuss TNA.  I was a little let down by Impact.  I watched a few weeks ago, and wasn't too impressed, but with all of the hype I had to check this out.  I was actually excited to watch wrestling for the first time in years.  Then the show started and all of my excitement started to fade away.  The Steel Asylum was a mess of spots, and then a DQ to end a cage match?  Then of course we had Jeff Hardy come out to sit on the cage and disappear for an hour or so.  I like Hardy however with his legal and drug problems I don't think it was a good idea to hire him at the moment.  Then we get Ric Flair to show up and shake a few people's hands.  We get a two minute Knockout Title match.  TNA has a talented Women's division yet they spent more time on The Beautiful People's strip poker than the match.  I get the point of the strip poker match was to reel in the male audience, but anyone with half a brain would know that we weren't going to see nudity.  That and I always thought they valued their Women wrestlers more than that to put them out there in a strip poker segment.

We finally got Hogan to come out at the top of the hour after repeatedly being told he was on his way every few minutes.  Those reminders reminded me way too much of old WCW, and when Hogan arrived with an nWo theme I got that little feeling of Deja Vu.  Not to mention we had Scott Hall, Sean Waltman running around the audience like what was done pre-nWo takeover.  At this time I was jumping back and forth between RAW and Impact.  I really wasn't that fascinated with the nWo facing off against Hogan and Bischoff.  Maybe I'm cynical, but I don't really trust the whole we can't do what we did before from Hogan.  Not to mention that Hogan was saying he was in the back all day, but ten minutes prior he was in a limo.

All of the matches seemed rushed.  You had the first ever meeting between Abyss and Samoa Joe that went less than five minutes.  With the exception of the tag match, and the main event all of the other matches were less than five minutes.  TNA really failed at showing their talented roster by putting more time into the nWo, and The Nasty Boys running around possibly attacking people or maybe that was the nWo.  With all of this going on TNA basically did more detriment to the talent that they have than helping them to establish themselves to an audience that didn't know anything about them.

I loved the main event.  AJ and Kurt Angle are incredibly talented guys.  They tore it down, but Hogan came out afterwards to give his seal of approval, and then to rush off to see Mick Foley the only man who seemed to have issues getting into the arena getting attacked by the nWo.  They even came on and said they were going to stay on past the hour for this match, but it was over by that time.  We spent the last five minutes with Hogan and his buddies.  However how are they going to top that match at Genesis?  Are they going to have that match at Genesis?  Also it seemed like they pulled all of the stops too soon.  They had countless reversals, near falls in the opening minutes of the match.  As a fan by the time it was over I had already seen Angle's finisher applied or nearly applied several times, and the same goes for AJ.  By the time it ended I had seen a great match, but I thought maybe if it was paced it would have been so much better.  By the way I'd have paid for that kinf of match.  It really could hurt buyrates that they gave it away for free.

Overall if they were going to present an alternative to WWE, I think they failed.  Production wise it was horrible, and I understand they've only done a few live shows, but they really need to get this down if they think they can overtake WWE.  The guys they brought in, really what are they going to do?  Don't get me wrong Flair is a legend, and one of the greatest of all time.  However if he does wrestle who will we wrestle?  He can't do what he did anymore.  His match with Shawn was great because of the emotion in it.  Jeff Hardy is talented, and being a former WWE Champion just six months ago makes TNA look good for getting him.  However the way he was brought in and then we don't see him until later in the show giving some painting to a teenager was right.  They really could have hyped him a bit more.  I'm going to throw him in with Hall and Waltman as well.  All three men have had drug, alcohol, and legal issues.  Jeff Hardy is facing some serious charges right now.  Do you really want to build a program around these guys right now?  Couldn't TNA wait for his legal issues be resolved before signing him?  It's going to further hurt wrestling if he gets found guilty of all of those charges.

The show delivered on the "surprise" factor, that's for sure. Some of the things I couldn't believe I was seeing, though, and not in a good way. A steel cage match ending in a DQ? After the match, the winner decided he is going to climb out the top anyway - and he can't make it! The camera finally had to cut away while the guy was still hanging there, about to fall. They reform the nWo  - only for Hogan to kill it off in 5 minutes. Jeff Jarrett is back and getting cheered by the crowd, Hogan comes out and tells everybody that Jeff Jarrett ran TNA in the ground. Then Bubba the Love Sponge basically telling Jeremy Borash to get lost every 10 minutes.. an angle where Mick Foley is not allowed in the building, so now Foley's not welcome in TNA ?!?..  I think TNA should be competing with ECW on Tuesday nights, not RAW on Monday nights.

TNA had a good thing going when they had a group known as "World Elite" Eric Young is 1 of the best mic guys I've heard in years(and that's 40 years to be exact) Then they release everyone but Young and put Young with Kevin Nash Wrestling's answer to the 2000 year old man

IF you combined the ages of Hogan, Nash, Hall, Bischoff and Waltman you'd get a 6 digit number

These idiots should've been retired 20+ years ago If there's 1 thing I can't stand in wrestling it's the recycling of old angles and storylines

Hall and Nash are suppose to wrestle at the next PPV Who's to say Hall will show up We all know his reputation and his demons same goes for Waltman who has no business anywhere near a wrestling ring

Don't get me started on Hogan Hogan should've been sent to prison along with his kid after that accident cause that accident is just as much his fault as it was Nicks'

Jeff Hardy was just indicted on federal charges and they're giving a him a job? Granted the indictment went down after he was signed but still the indictment was pending even before Hardy left the WWE

Hogan said Monday about putting over the young guys, If that's the case Why did the old guys dominate 95% of the show????

Last Monday night was the first time in years that I have been excited about wrestling.  I have to disagree with you guys.  I think TNA is doing the best they can with what is available and Hogan and company have brought some folks in that the company badly needed.  If TNA can generate some excitement, pro wrestling may once again become competitive between WWE and TNA.  WWE obviously isn't going anywhere and TNA I don't think can equal their ratings over time, but TNA can take away from the WWE audience. WWE has been complacent for a long time now.  What TNA is going to do is force McMahon to get off of his tail and improve  the WWE product.  I am expecting a really good wrestlemania this year.

Hogan putting the young guys over? Well, Orlando Jordan, Ken Anderson and Heidenrich (sp) are still young so I don't guess he was lying technically but that's not exactly what TNA fans wanted to see.

I don't think it's going to be long - April at the latest until we see the following TNA PPV
Hulk Hogan over Kurt Angle and A.J. Styles proving once again that the Hulkster is the greatest wrestler on the planet
Dixie Carter over Jeff Jarrett
Nasty Boy's over 3-D
Nash and Hall over Beer Money Inc.
Orlando Jordan over Elijah Burke
Eric Young over Ric Flair
Sean Waltman over the entire X-Division
Beefcake and Heidenrich over Hernandez and Matt Morgan
Tatanka over Rhino

regardless of how it develops you can bet that the TNA crew will be jobbing regularly to Hogan's Aussie crew.
