Bob Backlund in 1982 and The Wrestling Observer

I've been wondering about this for a while and I'm hoping someone can explain it to me.  In 1982, the Wrestling Observer awarded "Bob Backlund as WWF Champion" as the Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic of the year.  Why exactly was his title run in 1982 a disgusting promotional tactic?

Yeah Mike is probably right on the Valentine thingy... that and WO never seemed to care much for Backlund.
