Looking for feedback from you...
Sep 29th, 2010, 2:50pm

How about a show of hands from folks that may or may not be interested in a possible New Year's weekend fanfest at a beachfront location, maybe like Myrtle Beach, SC?

The working idea is that Friday night (Dec. 31) would be a New Year's Eve party with fellow VIPs and wrestlers, photo ops and autographs during the daytime on Saturday (Jan. 1) and wrestling matches on Saturday evening.

Again, I'm just looking for input to try to gauge if this is something a majority of you would be interested in. Nothing's definite, so your responses will go a long ways in determining if we pursue these thoughts.

A few points that are appealing to me... 1) hotel rooms would be much cheaper, likely between $40-50/night, with the exception of New Year's Eve night, which will be more. 2) The opportunity to do a lot of the things we do in Charlotte, but also to add a few more relaxed, interactive ideas that an oceanfront host hotel would allow.

Thoughts?

Personally i'd have to pass. My wife is ok with a wrestling weekend for the fest but to add a wrestling new years eve to it she'd cut off a part of me that i'm particularly fond of!  Grin  Shocked

This sounds like something I'd be interested in. A shorter fanfest would be alot easier for me to do these days.

Help me understand, John. Is it that your wife won't allow a 2nd weekend for fanfest or is the New Year's Eve "party" aspect that's more troubling?

If the New Year's Eve party is an issue for anyone, I'd like to hear it (really, I'd like to hear ANY and ALL concerns anyone may have,) and if you'd skip the weekend completely because of it, or if you'd still consider coming for the Saturday (and possibly Sunday,) fanfest activities.

Some of you had previously mentioned adding a "mixer" of sorts to our fanfest schedule. I think the New Year's Eve "party" would be a 6-7 hour staggered mixture of meeting everyone, maybe a band, and then some fun stuff as we get closer to midnight. Nothing extravagant, but I want folks to enjoy the evening. I'm told everyone will want their feet in the sand at midnight to experience the fireworks on the beach.

I'm not necessarily trying to duplicate what we do in Charlotte, but hopefully add another weekend in another atmosphere, doing some new and different type things that the beachfront/resort provides the opportunity for, with the hope that this could stand a chance of becoming a regular, yearly get-together.

Again, any and all input is much appreciated. From everyone.

Hey greg

To clarify its the whole "another wrestling weekend"...Dont get me wrong shes cool with my love for wrestling (though she just doesnt get wrestling..but at least she has tried) and she's cool with me going to the nwafest with the expense and all..but Im not so sure she'd be so tolerant with me adding another wrestling weekend to it....To be honest out of respect for her i just as soon be happy with the 1 weekend in august..WHICH I AM!!!  Cool

I would definitely go. What better place to hang out with than a bunch of legends and fellow wrestling fans. It has never been done before and I think it could be a lot of fun!

I would definately be interested in this if the costs were kept somewhat low. I think it would be really cool!

Interesting idea BUT those of us with partners who are non wrestling fans are really going to have a hard time getting away for something like this.

Also I am sure there are many not so obsessed wrestling fans who would prefer to have a relaxing NY rather than a wrestling NY. I can be slightly obsessive on wrestling and I am up for any convention but I would rather the Chrismas and NY break be just that - a break.

I would rather wait and save for Atlanta during the summer period than something like this to be honest.

This would be a pass for me.

I am not opposed, depending on the names booked, to making two trips to NWA Fanfest but not over New Years Eve- I'd rather spend that weekend with my family.

I think slaughter was looking for info about the possible NYE fest scorpion. You just gave him info to the atlanta fest in august. The site greg was looking at as an example is myrtle bch sc not atlanta. Seeing that there's no definite guest list or hotel yet i wouldnt even try to guess costs at this time...and ole assasin and mr wrestling 2 are attending ATLANTA in august..not NYE....at least as of yet  Huh

Would love to be able to go, however work (and trying to be around family as much as possible during the holidays while working a ton) would prevent me from attending...

Reread the topic of this post. Greg was not talking about Atlanta in August, but a New Year's Fanfest Extravaganza.

Several years ago I might have jumped on board but I have would probably pass on this now. Between work and family it's just not something that would work out to well right now.

Also Myrtle Beach is horrible in cold weather. If it's cold the wind makes it seem ten times worse. We've made dozens of work related trips there in the winter and I'm always glad to leave. Just my thoughts.

I like the idea Greg but think the location needs to be in Daytona Beach, FL if you are looking for a nice weather appeal for the fans. I love Myrtle Beach as I have been there quite a few times so not dissing Myrtle Beach at all.

I am all for going though as I would love to do something good for new years eve this year.

call me crazy... and that wouldn't be a first... but i for one enjoy the beach in the winter, and would like this a lot.  It would depend on price and guest but the wife and I would wanna go.

I am not in favor of the New Year's Eve party, but another, smaller Fan Fest would be great. And, besides, my wife loves the beach (I hate it, by the way), but she would be willing to go just for that fact. And, the cost wouldn't be like our Charlotte and Atlanta trips...so, I'm all for it.

I am also for a more regular smaller Fan Fests too.

Something like a LOTR/Signamania show which is just one day with maybe matches that night.

Thats sounds like a good idea..Have small 1 day shows run like 1 in the spring and 1 late fall and still have the huge weekend fest. The carolinas are dying for a regular wrestling signing like in the northeast. When i moved here from ny i was STUNNED about how little wrestling events there are! I went from a monthly thing to 1 WEEKEND A YEAR! Thank god for the fest or id go nuts!  Shocked

I would be for another smaller venue FanFest to accompany the larger FanFest stacked somewhere else in the annual calendar...but I couldn't leave the wife and kids during New Year's Eve...that is just family time for me.  Maybe something related to March Madness, I'd be all for...  New Year's is just not a good time to get away from the family.

Okay, I see this thread has been dormant for a few weeks, so Greg may have all the feedback he needs, but I'll throw in my 10 cents (pence?)

There are 2 distinct sides to this idea: one is the idea of having a short Fanfest in Winter at a warm beach location, whether that be Myrtle Beach or wherever. I think this is a GREAT idea....its a long wait in between august fanfests (especially if you have to miss one like I did this year) plus its a great excuse to go somewhere nice in the winter....where I live the weather is basically 6 months of freakin' Arctic Hell and 7 hours of daylight....

The second side is it being New Years Eve/day. Personally if you did it this year I would come BUT most years that is not the case as usually extravagant NYE plans are hatched months in advance with friends or family. Overall I would say that next to maybe Christmas day, New Years is the worst time to do something like this: its the time when travel is the most expensive and when you're guaranteed that people most likely have lots of other options and commitments for stuff to do, and that's without having the expense or hassle of leaving their home town/area and fly somewhere or take a long road trip for fanfest. And whilst the time between 12/26 and 12/30 is usually no mans lands for hotel rooms as literally no one is staying in hotels in this period, in my experience the extra cost you pay for NYE combined with extra cost of travelling at one of the most expensive times of year negates any small saving you'd get in the timeframe.

Also, whilst I know nothing about this side of things, it theoretically would also be the hardest time to get talent, with the extra price to get them to travel and be away from their families on NYE, and the logistics of putting on photo ops and auto lines, which is usually a herculean task at the best of times, when everybody's been up till 6am participating in advanced 'brewers shenanigans' on the night when they are most apt to do so. I fully understand the idea - that it would kinda be a beach party or whatever for everyone involved, like 'celebrate the New Year with your favourite wrestling legends', perhaps catered by In & Out burger (mmmm!), but I think either before or after the holidays would be better (say late January or early Dec)

Speaking of which....just a dumb thought, and I'm sure you have already, but have you thought about perhaps doing something in 2012 on Mania weekend, actually in the host city? Of course there are loads of wrestlers and fans in town from all promotions, plus with the exception of Mania or the Hall Of Fame there is nothing else that the majority of fans go to (the RoH / Dragon Gate shows never draw close to a thousand, for example, out of the 50,000 or so wrestling fans in town that weekend) so its conceivable that you could do a Thursday evening to Saturday afternoon deal, bringing in the old school NWA, indie & TNA types that Vince has no control over....
