Quote from cwh47 on Nov 13th, 2010, 9:38am: Wow! This is a card I promoted, a TV taping for SAPW, that brings back a lot of memories.
As the newspaper story explains, Chris Chavis had just signed with WWF and although he'd promised everyone he'd make the show (me, Wahoo, the sponsors, etc.) he cancelled at the last minute and went off to McMahonland.
His cancellation was troubling, but par for the course. What made it even more troubling is that Chris (a native of nearby Pembroke,) had spent several weeks in the area working with the local sponsor and visiting all the local businesses. When he didn't show up the night of the show, needless to say the folks were ticked off. When we went to settle up with the sponsor after the show, the guy in charge of the Social Studies club decided he was going to keep ALL of the money. Not refund it to the fans; he just arbitrarily decided it was the school's money to keep. All of it. Not even Wahoo could convince the guy that he was wrong. That all got sorted out on Monday when the school Principal got involved and cooler heads prevailed, but it really was a nasty and unfortunate situation.
Bob Caudle was there doing the TV. I believe it would end up being the final SAPW TV that Vince Torelli (Ken Shamrock,) would work. And I remember finding out late in the afternoon that this loser that SAPW occasionally rented a ring from (Willie Clay,) had no intentions of coming. So a few last-minute phone calls to lineup a replacement. For those of you that have promoted shows, you know there is nothing more gut-wrenching than either having a ring not show up or show up late.
Ahhhh, the good ol' days ;)
