What did the TV championship mean?
Nov 15th, 2010, 6:30pm

I understand if your the Georgia champion you are the champion of Ga.
I understand if your the Florida champion you are the champion of FL.,ect.
But I have never understood what a TV champion was. If it was a live show not shown on tv what would be the relevance of the title? Thanks.

The basis was to be able to have a championship defended on television while not diluting your major championships, which the intent was you would have to pay to see those titles defended in the arenas.

Case and point, over the past ten or so years you can see any world championship defended on TV every week, and the belts - even the matches themselves - have become meaningless.

Even though it did happen, I never understood the logic of a TV Title being defended on house shows.

I never liked the concept of the TV title, at least in how it was executed. To me, that should have been a championship only defended on TV, and not at the arena shows. That's the only way it made any sense. But you're right, it was defended alot more in the arenas than it ever was on TV and that never, ever made sense to me.

Anyone else remember the very funny interview Terry Funk did in 1989 making fun of the TV title? Sting was TV champion and he and Funk were jawwing with each other, I think Lance Russell was in between them, and Funk asked Sting what a TV title was? Shouldn't the belt have a big Motarolla on it? And what was he after next - - the Washing Machine Championship? That one would have a Maytag on it. Funk was hamming it up, and Sting was having a hard time keeping a straight face, too. Classic Funk.
