Chef Carl's 2011 Fanfest Review
Aug 8th, 2011, 12:58am

Let me preface by saying this was my first Fanfest and it exceeded my every expectation.

Day 1
Q&A with Bill Eadie - This was incredible and was a perfect way to start Fanfest.  I was thoroughly captivated the entire time.  He could have gone on for 6 more hours and I would have never gotten tired of him.

Q&A with David Schultz and Eddy Mansfield - I think the fact that Schultz said much less and his voice volume was quieter, he made a more profound impact.  Refer back to the Bill Eadie Q&A and you might remember that Edie said that very thing.  I know others have expressed their issues with Mansfield.   I agree he was repetitive.  I also agree that his passion for the business came out.  As I mentioned elsewhere I had the chance to sit at the bar with Eddy later that night and had a great time talking with him.  My biggest issue with the 2nd Q&A was the moderator....he was hideous and in my opinion the way he asked the questions might have also attributed to Mansfield's demeanor.

Q&A with Stan Hansen - This was icing on the cake for me.  I had so much fun listening to Stan.  He is one of my all time favorites and I was capitvated.  The only hickup was, again, the moderator who, in my opinion, seemed ill prepared for this Q&A.

Latenight afterwards - had a great time at the bar with several of you and several of the wrestlers.

Day 2
Was an enjoyable day getting to meet even more of y'all.

Autograph Session 1 - A lot of fun and to me a great way to start things off.  I particularly enjoyed talking to Pat Rose who asked that I email him a copy of the Boutwell Auditorium I had him sign.

Autograph Session 2 - The picture of the Sportatorium I had impressed both Killer Tim Brooks and Eddy Mansfield and both asked me to email them a copy of it.

Vendor Guests
The Iron Sheik was an absolute pleasure
Percy Pringle III was fun and told a great story about the Sportatorium
Terry Taylor was personable
Jim Duggan was great

I skipped Hall of Heroes to take my wife to dinner at a restaurant she has wanted to try for several years so I cant comment about it.  If I go next year, it will be a MUST DO

Day 3
Autograph Session 3 - I still can't believe how slow and long this particular session went.  I have theories, but all of the talent was still friendly, personable, and seemed apologetic for all of the delays.  I did miss getting Nick Bockwinkel who had to leave a second time after getting some kind of phone call.  I want to commend Tommy Rich and Austin Idol who went above and beyond with us.

Autograph Session 4 - Was a relaxed and almost fun session though Leilani Kai ended up keeping my Silver Sharpie (I'm not complaining and don't even mind as I know it wasnt done on purpose).  I greatly appreciated Stan Hansen taking a second to talk to me about one of the items I asked him to sign.

Vendor Guests
Robert Gibson - a class act
Dick Slater - arguably my least favorite interaction with a guest all weekend
Al Snow - Al was unbelievably nice, funny, and we had a great conversation about the ECW Arena.
Action Mike Jackson - a class act.  Mike actually taught High School in the Birmingham area and 2 of the other chefs I work with were 2 of his students and he actually remembered one of them by name.  Enjoyed talking with him.
Raven - Raven was great.  Not only did he sign my ECW Arena pic but did it in such a way to make it look like graffitti on the wall of the arena even going so far to write behind the telephone pole to enhance the look.
Paul Ordorff - because of fate and fortune, I had Mr Orndorff to myself for about 3 minutes.  I was able to share with him briefly about my wife and her fight with cancer and how she has beaten it.  I told him we were praying for him (we have) and would continue to do so in his fight.  He told me how he contracted the cancer and I told him I had the same issue and we shared a very emotional and inspirational moment where we were both on the verge of tears.  I have nothing but love and respect for him now.

Wrestling Matches/Party Bus - had an absolute blast to and from the matches with the exception of the drunk blonde.  Those who know what I am speaking of I hope will agree.  The matches themselves were a lot of fun and a good time.

All my Rowdy Friends - Awesome.  I had an absolute ball.

Day 4
Autograph Session 5 - Considering the "Heavy Hitter" nature of many of this sessions guests, it went remarkably smooth from start to finish.  Baby Doll was exceptionally nice, Tully was friendly yet efficient, Tony Atlas was excellant and to me Randy Colley was the MVP of the session with his conversation with a couple of us.

Overall impressions
I had an absolute blast.  I am already looking forward to 2012 in Charlotte if I can convince the wife LOL.

Loved reading that Carl...great job. Reading about everyone else's experience is one of my favorite things to do after the weekend is over.
