Quote from British Bulldog on Mar 22nd, 2012, 11:42am:As I understand it, the real reason for WCW's demise is a much less sexy, much less sensational story that involves corporate mergers, company ideologies and a bunch of executives moving around within Turner, AOL and Time-Warner, each with their own agendas and intentions towards their TV content.
TV storylines like Goldberg's streak ending or Jarrett laying down for Hogan, etc, aren't going to kill a company of that size.
Personally I like Russo and would love to meet him. But I think if he came down South to Fanfest, he'd probably get such a hostile reaction that it would make Eddy Mansfield look like Harley Race.
Daniel,
A perfect example of my last post...many wanted to lynch Mansfield after the Q&A. I had the chance to sit with him at the bar that night and have a one on one talk and really enjoyed my time with the guy (of course you know this because you featured it as a guest submission on your I Met A Wrestler site). And maybe if I sat down one on one with Russo I might have a different opinion, though I'm not overly optimistic.
That being said, I believe his booking contributed to the downward spiral which was started by Bischoff and others. When the AOL/Time Warner merger hit, the product was losing money at record pace - one source said as much as $60,000,000 in 12 months. When you acquire a company in a merger and one of the divisions is losing that kind of money, you don't keep it. If WCW had been making big money, I doubt seriously that it would have been sold off for the pittance it was to WWE and would probably still be around today even if not as a part of the AOL/Time Warner or whatever their name is now family.
