“CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING”
TAPED: MARCH 21, 1982 @ 6 PM
HAMBURG, PENNSYLVANIA @ THE FIELDHOUSE
BROADCAST: MARCH 24, 1982 @ 8:30-10:00
90 MINUTES ON THE USA NETWORK
ANNOUNCERS: VINCE MCMAHON, GORILLA MONSOON, DICK GRAHAM
REFEREE: DICK WOHERLE

McMahon and Monsoon welcome the fans to the show.

Both men plug the Cadillac Tournament that will take place in the world famous Madison Square Garden this Sunday night. Vince brings up that any of the men here today could drive away from the matches in a brand new car. The rundown of the program doesn’t even get a chance to get started before The Grand Wizard comes out with The Wild Samoans.

The manger immediately calls out his counterpart, Lou Albano. He says that his new team, Afa and Sika, were dissed by Albano just as much as the whole WWF has put down the Wizard. Albano says that The Wizard just got sloppy with his management of The Valiants. It took a master planner like The Captain to pick up the pieces. He tells Wizard to just dry up and blow away.

The Samoans get closer to Albano to back up their new guy. Wizard says he dares The Valiants to meet his men today. Title or non-title? It doesn’t matter. Albano says that will just give him another chance to show the world how stupid the Wizard is. All the participants talk trash, as they leave.

McMahon says for the fans not to miss any of this.

COMMERCIALS AND LOCAL PROMOS

STEVE TRAVIS defeats THUNDERFOOT I with a running knee lift @ 6:45.

Monsoon speaks with Travis at ringside. Travis says that his won-loss record in the WWF may not be a gaudy as some but he learns something every time out. Some superstars can get by on talent alone. But, there are a lot of great wrestlers who have to work hard and study a lot of film to be successful. Travis considers himself a member of the latter group. Whether it is in the Cadillac Tournament, or somewhere else, Travis makes a vow to get to the top.

Monsoon says that Jesse Ventura and Bobby Heenan will be out next. The mouths will be running amok.

COMMERCIALS AND LOCAL PROMOS

JESSE VENTURA defeats THUNDERFOOT II with an over-the-shoulder backbreaker @ 7:34.

Heenan says that he could talk all day about how vulgar the over-confidence of Tito Santana and Mark Youngblood is. He hands the mike over to Ventura, though. Ventura says that Chico Santana has to be dumber than he looks to want any of him or Big John Studd in the ring. They put out the biggest man in wrestling, Andre the Giant. Andre is back and he hasn’t come knocking at The Heenan Family’s door. What makes Chico and his running buddy think they can ring the doorbell? Gorilla brings up that Andre is otherwise occupied right now. Ventura tells Gorilla that Chico needs to shut up, if he knows what is good for him. The Weasel says, when somebody from the Heenan Family wins the Cadillac Tourney, everybody will have to take notice.

Monsoon says the wrestlers in the WWF are very active in the community and the country. Bob Backlund shows just how much next.

COMMERCIALS AND LOCAL PROMOS

BOB BACKLUND defeats TED ALLEN with an atomic drop @ 7:00.

Backlund meets Dick Graham at ringside. They show shots from a North Dakota State athletic department fund raiser where the proud alumnus, Backlund, was signing autographs. Additional shots have Backlund putting his luggage in his car and being attacked by a big masked man. Bob is beat down and the man escapes in a car. Backlund doesn’t know who the guy was but he knows Ken Patera had something to do with it. Backlund says that Patera must be desperate and that just fires up Backlund even more. He can’t wait for the Cadillac Tournament.

Graham says that the man who ambushed Andre the Giant last week, Hulk Hogan, is next.

COMMERCIALS AND LOCAL PROMOS

Hulk Hogan comes out to the ring, bragging all the way. He tells his opponent, Al Perez, that the rookie is about to get an “Andre the Giant beatdown”. The crowd roars, as Bruno Sammartino comes out. Bruno tells Hogan to “lay that beatdown on somebody that has the experience to dish it out, as well as take it”. Unexpectedly, Hulk listens to the crowd and says Bruno can “drag his geriatric butt in and get it beat”. Bruno complies and both men start slugging it out, as Perez leaves.

HULK HOGAN vs. BRUNO SAMMARTINO
Hogan catches the legend with a cheap shot running knee lift as he enters the ring. Hogan keys in on Bruno’s neck. Later, a swinging neckbreaker puts Bruno down. Dick Woherle counts three but sees Bruno get his leg across the bottom rope, as he does so. Hogan celebrates but turns ballistic when Woherle tells him the match must continue. Bruno sneaks behind and catches Hogan with a belly-to-belly suplex for the pin @ 9:57.

Bruno goes to the desk and says that this is vintage Hulk Hogan. One-on-one, he is a loser. In the ring, Hogan has to be pulled away from Dick Woherle by security. McMahon wonders if the youngster Hogan has enough experience to rebound from this.

Monsoon says that a team in transition, Raymond and Jacques Rougeau, will compete in the squared circle when “The WWF on USA” returns.

COMMERCIALS AND LOCAL PROMOS
JACQUES/RAYMOND ROUGEAU defeat KEVIN KELLY/FRANSISCO FLORES after Jacques superkicks Flores into a pinning bridge suplex by Raymond @ 8:02.

McMahon mentions that this match showed that you can’t take anything for granted in the WWF. Jacques seems a little take back by that remark. Raymond quickly steps in. he says that they will do whatever it takes, and he means anything, to get back into title contention. Jacques chimes in with the Cadillac Tourney would be a great place to start. On that note, McMahon says a tape for The Rougeaus was received this week at the WWF offices. Jacques says to run it and let’s get on with it.

Two well-built men are seen working out. They are in a darkened workout center and only shown from the back. A voice says that The Rougeaus can dream big. They can dream large. They can dream awesome. But, when these two men hit the WWF, the Rougeau’s dream will be…..over!

The show returns to Raymond taking a headstrong Jacques off camera. Monsoon says this may just make the mountain the Rougeaus have to climb even steeper.

McMahon says the Intercontinental Champ, Pedro Morales, is next.

COMMERCIALS AND LOCAL PROMOS

McMahon and Monsoon show clips of Kareem Muhammad using brass knucks on Pedro Morales, on TV and at house shows.

PEDRO MORALES defeats YELLOWJACKET I after the masked man missed a dropkick. Morales bulldogs Yellowjacket I @ 7:34.

Morales talks to Dick Graham at ringside. They quickly go to a promo shot in a gym. Morales is shown taking some training from….SMOKIN’ JOE FRAZIER. The show returns to Morales holding up both fists and asking WWF Commissioner Arnold Skaaland to get him some matches where punching is legal. He vows that he will knock Muhammad around so much he will think he is back to being Ray Candy. Pedro hopes he can get some shots in on Candy at the Cadillac Tournament.

McMahon tells the audiences that the main event is next.

COMMERCIALS AND LOCAL PROMOS

THE WILD SAMOANS w/THE GRAND WIZARD vs. THE VALIANTS w/LOU ALBANO
This one comes down to the most devastating presence of the managers. Wizard trips Jerry Valiant and Sika splashes him. Jerry barely kicks out before three. Later, Albano runs the back of Afa into the ring apron after Johnny threw him to the floor. A butterfly suplex gives the Valiants the win. However, the kick out by Afa is very close to being before three. Woherle calls for the bell @ 13:02.

All three losers argue with McMahon at ringside. The Grand Wizard is so angry he makes the statement that if him and his men don’t win a re-match next week, they will leave the WWF. Albano, who hasn’t left the ring, says that shows how loco the Wiz is and quickly accepts the stip. The Samoans look flabbergasted.

McMahon says that the fans can’t miss next week’s show.

The old Dragon has the young knight just where he wants him. Hogan had best grow some guts and brains to take out Bruno.  Ventura and Santana are two of my faves, great to see them going at it.  Backland and Patera has been a great feud that has surprised.  Not loving the Valiants as the tag champs but like Santana and Youngblood they will grow on me.

There is a reason why you are the Dean.
