Maple Leaf Wrestling presents
"SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING"
All matches sanctioned by the National Wresyling Alliance - Vincent McMahon, President

We open the show at the announce desk, Sam Menacker & Milt Avruskin greet the viewers.

MA:  "In a week's time, wrestling fans in Toronto will be flocking to Maple Leaf Gardens for the first NWA-sanctioned Maple Leaf Wrestling event there in over a year.  The Main Event will see Sweet Daddy Siki and Kurt Von Steiger battle for a chance to face Gene Kiniski who currently holds the NWA Canadian Heavyweight championship title.  We'll see Kurt Von Steiger in our Main Event today as he makes his final preparations".

SM:  "I have to clear up a misconception, Milton.  Gene Kiniski holds the BELT, the physical OBJECT, the over-grown piece of jewelry!  He did not earn it, there is no record of him doing anything to deserve it, he just HAS it.  Commissioner Watson says that is all well & good, but it is NOT!  As far as I can tell, some office worker at NWA head office got bamboozled into sending it to the big loudmouth".

MA:  "Sam, today you will be seeing Dick Beddoes on the show, talking to none other than GENE KINISKI.  Maybe you can voice your concerns to Gene personally".

SM:  "No, I'll not be rocking the boat.  Kiniski can scream and holler all he wants about being the greatest athlete in Canada, I'll wait for the big lug to prove it".

To mid-ring & Norm Kimber introduces our opening match.

Karl Von Steiger vs. The Wolfman
One fall 15 minutes

Kurt accompanies Karl to the ring, then heads to the announce table.

KVS:  "Karl and I have made our plans today - you Canadians should try to be organized.  The only way to get things done is with efficiency, clock-work precision!"

Karl not exactly clockwork, but still battering Wolfman Willie about.

MA:  "What sort of organization are you referring to?"

KVS:  "Karl and I come here instead of back to Australia where we set records for winning tag team championships.  Maple Leafs Wrestling has not had a championship tag match for us at all!"

Karl still laying the wood to The Wolfman.

MA:  "I see your point!  The wrestlers here ARE seeming to line themselves up as teams and I know Commissioner Watson wants to make an announcement next week".

The goateed villain strokes his gleaming skull.

KVS:  "Vell, KINISKI is walking around with a belt and has had no title match, zat is what should be done for the Von Steigers!  Look at Karl and that hairy creature, zat is the type of competition ve haff!  Next week I do like that for Sweet Daddy!"

Karl is on the floor - after stomping & scoopslamming his foe, he re-enters the ring with a bellow & arms raised.  Wolfman doesn't beat the count.  Now, Kurt is in to raise his brother's arm as we take a break.

COMMERCIAL 1  This segment of "Superstars of Wrestling" is brought to you by Maple Leaf Foods, our weiners are the CHAMPIONS of hot dogs

Norm is joined in the interview area by Jerry & David Novak, The Bounty Hunters.

NK:  "Gentlemen, we recently saw you on "Supersatars of Wrestling" come out to the aid of Chris Tolos.  You have explained how The Bounty Hunters are somewhat for hire - does this mean that Mr. Tolos has...availed himself of your services?"

JN:  "We've had no business with Tolos, it was sort of a free sample for potential new customers.  We HAVE had business in Texas with ONE man here in Maple Leaf, one Beautiful Bruce and our business THERE was NOT a pleasure!"

DN:  "That's right, Brucie had a WAY better team down in Texas, a couple of camel-riding nomads.  This pair of he has here STINK!  The masked guy and the Grand Mau-Mau look like they were scraped from the gutter.  Brucie, you are really hitting the bottom of the barrel, twinkletoes!"

NK:  "You are referring to Bruce's current team of the Greast Malumba and THE Hangman.  Well, there ARE still more wrestlers heading our way, so he MIGHT have more at some point".

JN:  "Yeah, every territory has its comings and goings.  We're GLAD to assist in the goings department.  We'll take on Brucie's men and maybe we'll get rid of all three...FOR GOOD!"

At the announce desk, Milt & Sam discuss this development.

MA:  "That sounded like an out & out CHALLENGE, Sam.  We could be starting to find out who has what it takes in he tag division!"

SM:  "It is always interesting when wrestlers move about and are sometimes surprised to find old friends....OR enemies.  I'm wondering if the Novaks came here for revenge on Beautiful Bruce for whatever happened in Texas".

Match 2 Jerry Brown with Rip Hawk vs. Frank Savage
One fall 15 minutes

Rossitani is treated to a chant of "VICKIE" - Brown & manager Rip Hawk have to make do with jeers as the trio arrives.

SM:  "Well, Rip Hawk probably has a team here that can throw their hat in the ring as far as tag teams go, Brown has some experience.  And I think it is great that the NWA has taken an interest in how this territory is run by assigning Rip Hawk his position".

MA:  "Apparently, it is some sort of package deal where these two HOLLYWOOD BOMBSHELLS were assigned to work with wiley Rip Hawk".

Brown in control so far, he's breaking out a figure four.  Savage is close enough to the ropes - Hawk is over to swat the hand away.

SM:  "Possibly a new idea from head office, the manager being allowed to help the ref..."

Nice try, Sammy!  John Bonello does not want Rip's assistance - as Hawk has him distracted, Rossitani has the tag rope around Savage's neck.  More running around for the ref.

SM:  "I always laugh at these pretty boy types, thinking good looks help in the ring!  This is hand to hand combat, a test of skill & ability".

Savage is being pummelled by a series of vicious elbowdrops & Brown hooks the legs.

MA:  "Well, the pin by Jerry Brown was clean...after the break, well hear from GENE KINISKI, with acclaimed sports scribe Dick Beddoes!"

COMMERCIAL 2

We return to the interview area, flashy dresser Dick Beddoes waving a stogie as Canada's greatest athlete displays the big belt for him.

DB:  "Let the cameras get a good shot of that baby, Gene!  We go way back to your CFL days and truly, nobody more deserving to be called "Canada's Greatest Athlete" than you, champ!  Now I have heard some grumblings about you being awarded this championship".

GK:  "As the greatest world champ the NWA has ever had, it makes perfect sense to have me hold this while the contenders and pretenders get sorted out by the Tunneys and "Whipper" Watson.  There is a BIG match as the NWA returns to the Gardens where Sweet Daddy Siki & Kurt Von Steiger decide who gets the first chance to make things OFFICIAL and the CRYING can stop!"

DB:  "How do you mean, Gene?"

GK:  "When I beat the number one contender we can END the sour grapes and jealousy - I'll PROVE this is where this belt BELONGS!"

Dick Beddoes is smiling & nodding, but then has a look of surprise as a man in street clothes heads to the podium.  Dick waves his stogie in greeting.

DB:  "What an unexpected surprise - fans, you shouldn't need an introduction, its JERRY VALIANT!"

Taciturn Valiant mutters a greeting, congratulations and good luck to a puzzled Big Thunder.  Then turns to leave.

DB:  "Hang on, Mr. Valiant, its great seeing you but this NEWSWORTHY - what brings you to Hamilton?"

JV:  "Got some distant relatives in the area I'm visiting, you know - like the people HERE - the freeloading types with their hands out for Cousin Jerry.  Gotta go they'll want me to splurge on snacks.  Like I said, Kiniski, good luck - seems a shame you're having trouble finding a challenger"

As the segment concludes, Norm Kimber is at ringside being accosted by Beautiful Bruce!

BB:  "Hold on Kimber, I DEMAND equal time!  The Novaks were bringing up ancient history, telling lies and insulting Beautiful Bruce Productions!  THE TRUTH must be TOLD, baby & I AM the one and only man you can trust!"

NK:  "The Bounty Hunters DID make a challenge, I think they were talking about the here and now, Bruce!"

The chants of BRUCIE force BB to yell louder.

BB:  "Those idiots GET their challenge and as has been suggested, BBP may still be adding MORE stars!  As I am a REAL sportsman, I'll give the Novaks ONE chance to recant their challenge!  I am NOT saying who I have in mind to SHUT them UP!"

NK:  "Well, the match can be added to the show today..."

BB:  "I WAS NOT FINISHED, Norm.  I'm used to insults by idiots like the Bounty Hunters and these fans...SHUT UP!  But BBP is being insulted by the clowns trying to run things here.  NOBODY from BBP was given a chance at Kiniski's title AND as the tag division is rolling, I've heard NOTHING from Layton, Watson or the promoters!  If Canada wants a Tag Team champion you can be proud of, you knock on MY door, baby!"

NK:  "Are you finished?"

Bruce taps his temples.

BB:  "I'm done talking, Normie-poo, but the wheels are ALWAYS turning and don't you forget it!"

As BB flounces off, telling the fans to SHUT UP, Norm hustles in a quick intro for a quick match.

Match 3 Denny Brown vs. Joe Marcus
One fall 15 minutes

SM:  "Two wrestlers here named Brown, this one HAS brown hair - keep HIM away from the hair dye, please!"

MA:  "Well, "Downtown" Denny is one of the more skilled men here at a lighter weight - I'll be interested in seeing if there will be a seperate weght division title.  For that matter,  Mr. Marcus appears to be in the same weight class..."

Quick work by Brown featuring dropkicks & flying headscissors get the win.

After announcing the official match particulars, Kimber hypes Maple Leaf Wrestling live this week in Leamington, Niagara Falls and London

COMMERCIAL 3

We return & The Bounty Hunters are in the ring, bemused smiles as they watch Beautiful Bruce pace back & forth before heading over to the announce desk with thumbs hooked in the electrified suspenders.

BB:  "First off, the idiot fans that want to chant BRUCIE do NOT bother me but I suggest that as a courtesy to my FANS, they be ejected from the studio!  Second I LOVE watching the Novak boys squirming up there!  They KNOW they've opened a can of worms, they KNOW they're in a battle of WITS armed only with water pistols!  I'll not let them think they have put ANY pressure on Beautiful Bruce Productions - I will ANSWER their challenge with the two men who SHOULD be in the top spot of the tag team rankings!  SO THERE!"

Bruce is cheered on as he helps THE Hangman bring out Great Maumba - Hangman has a lasso around Mal's neck, Bruce goading things along with the riding crop.

SM:  "Did I hear Bruce say "so there"?  Is this a school playground?  Not the toughest fighting words..."

MA:  "Well he is going with the duo I had expected, but he sounded like he might have an ace in the hole, Sam.  I heard he was asking to speak with JERRY VALIANT".

SM:  "And fans, DON'T TRY this at home!"

Milt is puzzled.  "What is that?"

SM:  "What the Hangman is doing, don't walk down the street with a rope around the neck of a 300 pound African - its dangerous, and people will stare".

Match 4 The Bounty Hunters (David & Jerry Novak) vs. Great Malumba & THE Hangman with Beautiful Bruce

Malumba has been untethered and unleashed and is trying to get a hold of David Novak.  More of a chase than grappling, Dave is able to sneak a few moves on the bumbling beast.  We go to break with David ramming the Congo cranium to Jerry's boot.

COMMERCIAL 4

As we return, Jerry Novak tries a whip of big Malumba - blocked & reversed.  Great Malumba staggers to his corner & THE Hangman enters.  Bruce gives Mal a few whacks of the riding crop.

MA:  "Bruce's team is finally back on even terms, oh a nice blind tag for David.  The ref saw it but not the masked man &  Bruce is still engaged with the man from Africa!"

THE Hangman has some uppercuts for Jerry, who blocks them.  There is a tapping of Hangman's shoulder - he turns & gets walloped by David.  Fans cheer a quick double-whip & backdrop that puts Hangman over the top and to he floor.  Bruce has a plan!  As Hangman re-enters, Bruce pushes Malumba in.

SM:  "The big goof is bringing The Hangman his rope!?"

Great miscommunication, Malumba delivers the rope to the ref & rolls out, VERY happy with his cunning maneuver.  Confused by fans' laughter.  Might be for Brucie's conniption, as well.

The Hangman guesses the rope was meant for him, we have the ref & both grapplers fighting for it, The Hangman gets control and uses it around David's neck for a takedown.  Bell is called for and Jerry goes to beat the tar out of the masked man who escapes by the skin of his teeth.  For some reason, Bruce thinks his boys have earned an arm-raise on the floor.

SM:  "Beautiful Bruce is acting like he just won the gigolo-of-the-year prize.  We have a good Main Event coming right up".

COMMERCIAL 5

We return with Steven Little Bear getting some cheers as he removes his head-dress.  Booing ensues as the Von Steigers appear.  Karl is allowed to be cornerman.

Match 5 Kurt Von Steiger vs. Steven Little Bear
One fall TV time limit

MA:  "Remember, fans, this well-travelled much-decorated veteran Kurt Von Steiger headlines our return event at Maple Leaf Gardens October 13th...he faces the very popular Sweet Daddy Siki for a shot at Gene Kiniski & the NWA Canadian title".

SM:  "I have not seen Siki lately - I hope he is training hard and not out partying & night-clubbing".

MA:  "Siki is a very sociable, fun-loving type".

Little Bear ends a slow start by landing several chops.  Kurt insists they are illegal.  After the ref discusses the the issue, he has to go to apron to repeat himself with Karl.  While Kurt has Steven's throat over the ropes.  As the break is ordered, Von Steiger yanks back on the strand, snapping Little Bear back.

SM:  "I don't know if the Chief is a good enough test for Kurt, to be honest".

Now Kurt hits a shoulderbreaker - followed by another to the other limb.  Now sets in to a Camel Clutch position.

SM:  "Both of the Chief's shoulders may be torn apart here".

The valiant warrior endures a great deal of face stretching in the predicament as well before submitting.

SM:  "Live to fight another day says Little Wolf".

MA:  "Little BEAR and Karl has grabbed the head-dress from the timekeeper's desk - he's thrown it to Kurt!"

Who waves it under Steven's nose and is taunting him.  Steven gains his feet but Karl pins his arms!  We close as an infuriated native is forced to watch Kurt Von Steiger gleefully grinding the badge of honor under his jackboots!

MA:  "An arrogant, heinous act by the Germans...here comes Sweet Daddy!"

Glimpse of Siki going in over the ropes as the credits roll.

Love the set-up of The Hunters/Swayze. Kiniski having the physical possession of the belt before it is decided is masterful. Enjoyed the interaction of Hawk in the match. Von Steiger vs. Siki is setting up nicely. This week, Menacker comes of as a tell-it-like-it-is announcer instead of a swarmy heel. Nice touch there.

Once again, great use of a limited roster.

Not the first opening live card I've done that could VERY generously be described as "nice".

Menacker is likely going to be hazy, as I'm still trying to put a finger on it.  Not out & out heel, more like an unenthusiastic gruff curmudgeon going through the motions.  Based on my hazy recall of a short Stampede stint IRL.  Not much announcer options, Lyons would be too predictable.

Going to be happy to draw flies to the Gardens on the 13th!  lol
