AWA Heartland 10-2-82 Give it up for the old guys!
Oct 4th, 2012, 3:07pm

AWA Heartland Wrestling taped at WGN-TV Studios on 10/2/82 for air the weekend of 10/5 – 10/7/82 syndicated throughout the Midwest and Manitoba, Canada. Hosts Roger Kent and Ron Trongard.

Roger welcomes everyone to the show and says Ron will be along shortly to talk to some of the greatest stars of the AWA. He says today’s show is pack full of action and brings in former AWA World Tag Team Champions, Larry Hennig and Harley Race. The demeanor of the veterans is that of two old friends together on vacation years after their college days. The comfort with themselves and their accomplishments sets the tone of the interview.

Kent asks if they still have enough gas in the tank to beat USA Tag Team Champions, Adrian Adonis and Jesse Ventura for the belts. Hennig says without a doubt. Harley agrees and warns Johnny Valiant not to interfere or he’ll “Shove that cigar up where the sun doesn’t shine so far his ears will be burning!”

MATCH 1 – HARLEY RACE & LARRY HENNIG def LARRY SHARPE & EL TORO in 6:32.

After  Race and Hennig leave ringside, The Valiant Empire comes out, American Television Champion Larry Zbyszko, USA Tag Team Champions Adrian Adonis and Jesse Ventura and “The Uncrowned USA Heavyweight Champion” Ken Patera along with their manager, Johnny Valiant. Valiant says all of the gold will soon be theirs. Patera chimes in, “Bob Backlund your days are numbered when you start facing real men like myself and not wimps like Greg Gagne!”

Adonis says he saw the AARP Tag Team Champions out here earlier. Ventura says there is nothing sadder than watching two old fools try to relive their glory days. Adonis chimes in there is no tag team that can stand in their way of the World Tag Team Titles held by Jack and Jerry Brisco.

Larry Zbyszko says guys like Blackjack Lanza, LeRoy Brown and Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell have no business being in the ring with him. He adds they couldn’t beat him if they wrestled for a week much less for the title in the 10minute limit.

================000000=======================

Kent is joined by former International and World Heavyweight Champion Nick Bockwinkel. Bockwinkel says losing the International Title was a blessing in disguise even if Jerry Lawler stole the belt from him. He says he now can focus all of his attention on winning the AWA World Title from Wahoo McDaniel.  Kent reminds Bockwinkel, that Wahoo holds the advantage in their best of three series with a win over him in Las Vegas. Bockwinkel says that will be rectified in St. Paul on October 14th.

Kent throws it to a VTR of Wahoo McDaniel, who has a Southwestern Championship Wrestling banner in the background.  Wahoo says Nick Bockwinkel poses a dangerous challenge to his belt. He says anytime you face a former champion it’s more dangerous than a regular contender due to their poise and knowledge of what it takes to be champion. He says Bockwinkel is a two-time world champion but he has beaten him before, one particular night in Lexington, Kentucky he recalls, he says St. Paul and Chicago will be no different.

MATCH 2 == KEN PATERA def EL GRAN APOLLO in 8:22 in a match where, Apollo makes a great showing for himself.

Blackjack Lanza, Steve Williams and Bobby Jaggers come out and Jaggers is holding an American Flag. Williams says Adrian Adonis and Jesse Ventura are looking past them to the world tag team titles, he says that could be a costly mistake. Jaggers says a lot of good tag teams are after Ventura and Adonis. He says after they take care of “Goonsday and Pinky Paul” in St. Paul, they are going to sit back and watch Adonis and Ventura get the “BLEEP Kicking of a lifetime”  when they face Race and Hennig.

Lanza adds Paul Ellering and his Doomsday guys need to learn what it is like to be not only tough, but AWA tough!

This brings out Sheiks Adnan and Hussein. Adnan is holding a flag of Iraq and says it is the only flag that matters. Adnan says the people of Iraq founded civilization and that he himself is a descendant of The Great Xerxes, “which means I have the mind of a god!”

To which Jaggers quips, “More like a mind like a bag of Chichuahuas !”

Trongard tries not laugh as Adnan is incensed.

“You try deface me and Hussein and The Great Xerxes, you Bobby Jaggers and you, Steve Williams and especially you, Cowboy, are proof of the infidels that roam this country that will be ours soon!”

With that Adnan tries to hit Jaggers with his Iraqi flag. Jaggers, Williams and Lanza are ready to fight.

As the two sides are getting close to blows, AWA Heartland Vice-President Buddy Rogers comes out and says the way to settle this is for both teams to face each other later on the program! Both teams agree.

BREAK 2 =======================0000===================

Manny Fernandez comes out and says the Cowboys are in for a rough time saying Sheik Adnan and Hussein are crazy and brutal. “That’s what I like about them!” He adds in St. Paul on October 14th he and The Sheiks will “kill three birds at one time” when they face The Crusher, Jerry Lawler and Andre The Giant! He adds it’s time everybody felt the wrath of “The Ragin’ Bull!”

MATCH 3 – DOOMSDAY, ANIMAL & KONGA & PAUL ELLERING def BUCK ZUMHOLF, GENE LIGON, & MIKE FEVER in 6:01.

After the match Doomsday and Ellering go to ringside. Ellering does the talking as Animal and Konga look menacing in the background! Ellering says the Apocalypse is upon the AWA. He adds they are the future and no one, especially not “a bunch of dirty doggie punching cowpokes like Lanza, Williams and Jaggers” can stop them.

BREAK 3 ==================00000==========================

Buddy Rogers returns to the set and tells Roger Kent the location and date for the Heartland Heavyweight Title has been set. He says Thanksgiving night, November 22nd, Omaha, Nebraska will host the tournament at the Civic Auditorium. Roger says there will be more information in the weeks to come.

Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell come out. Brunzell says Adonis and Ventura are ripe for the picking for the USA Tag Team Titles. He says the High Flyers will be flying high again soon.

Greg Gagne smiled and said some of best moments of his career have been teaming with Brunzell, but he adds the sounds of being Heartland Heavyweight Champion sounds nice as does beating Backlund for the USA Title.

Kent asks Greg point blank if he has hostilities towards Backlund. Greg says he looks at Backlund as an adversary, and because of that he has to think of his career and not friendship. Brunzell seems surprised by this.

“Look Greg, Bobby has done nothing wrong and has nothing against you.” Jim reasoned with his partner.

But Greg made a stand.

“Jim, this has nothing to do with you. It doesn’t even have anything to do with Backlund. It has everything to do with me and my career. Being part of the High Flyers is a great part of my career, but I don’t want to be the only part.”

MATCH 4 – GREG GAGNE def BILLY ANDERSON in 8:33

USA Heavyweight Champion Bob Backlund comes out and starts in on Ken Patera. He says athletes like Patera disgust him because they misuse their abilities to injure people. Bob says he has been in this sport long enough to know how to take care of monsters. He says be beat a monster in Sheik Adnan to win the belt. He says he will beat back the challenge of Patera.

Trongard asks him about Greg Gagne. He says he understands Greg’s frustration but his responsibility is to successfully defend the USA Title and if that means beating Gagne, then that’s what will happen on the 14TH in St Paul.

BREAK 4========================0000=====================

Waving the American Flag, Bobby Jaggers and Steve Williams come out first with Blackjack Lanza. Then with the Iraqi flag, Sheiks Adnan and Hussein come out. Adnan says something in Arabic gibberish to Kent before he gets into the ring.

MATCH 5 – BOBBY JAGGERS & STEVE WILLIAMS vs. SHEIK ADNAN & SHEIK HUSSEIN.

The match is wild from the start with both teams brawling as the fans are standing on their feet. Lanza is doing commentary with Kent as both teams trade off the advantage. The Sheiks do not seem to be accustomed to the wild and rough style of Jaggers and Williams but get the upper hand with cheap shots.  As Jaggers nails a bulldog on Hussein, Williams nails him with a spear and before Adnan can get in the ring to save his partner, it’s over! Bobby Jaggers and Steve Williams have defeated Sheiks Adnan and Hussein in 9:10.
Adnan stands in the ring with a look of anger and disbelief, while Williams, Jaggers and Lanza celebrate outside the ring as the show goes off the air.

Could just hear Adonis and Ventura with the old guys line about Race and Hennig. Really marked out for the flag altercation promo. Lanza, Jaggers, and Williams are a dynamite six man team. So is Doomsday! I really like the way you are making Gagne turning the page on The High Flyers make sense. I wonder how the wedge between Brunzell and Greg will fester, though. Perfect way to end the match with Dr. Death's spear.

Can't wait for that Heartland tourney.
