Championship Wrestling from Florida presents: September Recap – through the first weekend of October, 1982 The Southern Heavyweight Title With Jake Roberts now firmly established as the #1 Contender after his victory over Greg Valentine on Labor Day, the Snake has started to use the Legion of Doom to wear down the champion. Jonathan Boyd was the first member of the Legion to take his swing at Windham, losing via disqualification after using his Doomsday glove on the champion in Fort Lauderdale. The Missing Link did his damage a week and a half later in the Jacksonville Coliseum, falling by disqualification as well after roughing up referee Gilberto Roman. Now, it is the One Man Gang that gets his turn with Windham with the two set to wrestle in a non-title match on TV October 13th. Roberts, always in the background with King Curtis by his side, has said that he wants the Legion to have broken Windham’s body before he destroys his spirit. Florida Heavyweight Title Fans have greeted Kevin Sullivan with boos all over the state as he has defended the title. On television, he has told Barbara Cleary that “Abuddah Dien was testing the power of my faith in him. That is why he took his power away and when I showed him I was worthy, showed him that I was capable of being the vessel he deserved, and then I was truly shown the light that burns deep within the blackness of my soul. I was shown that I could have his power back. And with that power, I’m never giving up this title. Not to Butch Reed, not to Greg Valentine or Bob Roop, Bobby Orton, not even to the man that ruined me. The man who took my power away in the first place; the American Dream, Dusty Rhodes.” Butch Reed has come within a hair of taking the title, but time limit draws or stoppages due to blood have derailed him. The Florida Tag Titles The Malenko Brothers and the duo of Mike George and Jesse Barr are on a collision course. The Malenkos had a shot at the World Tag Titles in mid-September in Hawaii, only to have Barr and George interfere. Two weeks ago, while Dean and Joe were in a match, Barr attacked their manager and father, Boris Malenko, knocking him unconscious. Dean and Joe have demanded a match with Mike and Jesse on Saturday’s telecast with a title match to Barr and George if they win and banishment from Florida if they fail. Florida TV title Butch Reed still has the belt and is being chased by Bill Ash and Bob Orton Jr. Orton has been the most persistent challenger as Ash is still involved in his feud with Reed’s associate “Hacksaw” Brett Sawyer. All four men have been in tag team action as of late with Reed set to defend the TV title Saturday against Bob Brown. Other news and feuds- Greg Valentine and “Crippler” Bob Roop went at it through all of September after Roop cost Greg the top contender’s spot for the Southern title. After 3 bloody weeks on TV and in arenas across the state, Eddie Graham ordered a loser leaves Florida match for October 3rd in Miami, which Valentine survived to send Roop out of Florida for one calendar year. Now, Valentine has set his sights back on Jake Roberts, Barry Windham, and World Champion Dusty Rhodes. - “Professor” Bill Ash, Black Bart, and “Outlaw” Don Bass have fought Brett Sawyer and Omar Atlas tooth and nails, with manager Izzy Slapowitz costing his men more matches than he helped them to. Last week, Ash and his Roughriders finally had enough and publically fired the absent Slapowitz and introduced their new manager, simply called the Boss. Whether this change with send the trio in the right direction is an open question. - The Killer B’s (Brutus Beefcake and Brian Blair) are in a battle with Jonathan Boyd and his Missing Link. Blair is holding his team together as Beefcake’s behavior and interviews are getting more and more deranged.
