AWA Las Vegas Wrestling 10/2/82 Brody on the loose
Oct 9th, 2012, 1:52pm

Las Vegas International Wrestling taped 10/2/82 at WGN TV Studios in Chicago for broadcast on KVVU-TV Channel 5 in Las Vegas at 12noon on Saturday 10/6/82. Host Gene Okerlund

“HOOT! HOOT! HOOT!” As Gene Okerlund opens the show, Bruiser Brody comes out stomping and “hooting”.  Brody says he wants Sheik Adnan El Kaissie today and will tear the studio apart until he gets what he wants. Brody then smashes a wooden chair on the floor. To try and stop the carnage before it gets worse, Lord James Blears comes out.

“My God, Brody, you are making a mess! Now, listen to me. Tearing up property isn’t gonna change anything.”

“I want Adnan and his rat faced friends, NOW!”

Out comes Sheik Adnan along with Sheik Arman Hussein and Brody goes after them before Blears can react.

Brody is fighting Adnan and Hussein as Blears motions to some people off camera. “This is no good,” he tells Okerlund as Brody kicks Adnan in the face.

Wrestlers from the back come out and pull Brody away from Adnan and Hussein, as Arman gets one last shot in. Then The Sheiks go over to Okerlund as Brody is taken to the back.

Sheik Adnan: “This Brody wants to face a Sheik. This Brody wants to be humiliated by a Sheik. This Brody wants his career ended by a Sheik. Well, today his camel is lucky, because today he will get his wish to face a Sheik and have his career ended by a Sheik. Today will be the last day for this Bruiser Brody as he faces a Sheik. (slight pause) Sheik Arman Hussein!”

Hussein looks surprised by this as Adnan smiles and shakes his hand. Hussein says something in Arabic jibberish, to which, Adnan smiles and pats him on the back. Hussein looks worried as the two leave Okerlund at ringside.

MATCH 1 – KEVIN KELLY & BRAD RHEINIGANS  def MIKE FEVER & GENE LIGON in 6:23. During the match, Gentleman Jim Holiday came out and took notes but left before Kelly pinned Fever.

Rheingans and Kelly go to ringside with Okerlund. Rheingans tells Gene they are looking at becoming tag team champions here in Las Vegas. Kelly says the action in Vegas is as hot as the women.

BREAK 1 ===============0000======================

When we come back, Okerlund is with the International Heavyweight Champion, Jerry Lawler. He says Lawler has a big date for the AWA World Title on October 21 at the Dunes Hotel and Oasis Casino. With that Okerlund invites Lawler to listen to comments from the world champion, Wahoo McDaniel.

VTR: Wahoo McDaniel with the Southwestern Championship Wrestling logo in the background: “You know Jerry Lawler, you think you had me beat in Memphis awhile back, but a smart champion knows how to keep his belt. You see that’s why I am champion, Lawler, because I can beat you with my smarts, instincts, on the mat or just beat the heck out of you. Now, I will say this and give credit where credit is due. Jerry Lawler, you’re a fine wrestler and aren’t afraid of a fight.  But, know this… You are not world championship material. You aren’t ready for the Japans, the Australias, the Europes, the Mexicos or the Caribbeans. You’d be better off going home to Memphis where you belong!”

Back with Okerlund and Lawler.

Jerry Lawler: “I’ve heard that crap all of my life, Wahoo. And you know what, I expected better of you than that. I didn’t come to Vegas, or Chicago, or anywhere else just to see baseball games and see showgirls. No, I came here to make a name for myself. I beat Nick Bockwinkel for this International Title and come October 21st, Wahoo, I will beat you for the AWA World Title!”

Manny Fernandez comes out.
The Ragin’ Bull tells Lawler, he might’ve beaten Nick Bockwinkel for the belt, but he hasn’t defended it anywhere, but Memphis.

Fernandez says The Chief is right, ”Lawler you are a small fish holding a big belt in a very large pond!”

Lawler responds, “Fernandez, I am not afraid of you or your blindsiding cheap shots! You call me a small fish,  well I am the International Champion, the number one belt in Las Vegas and second only to the world title in the AWA…so that tells me I am a pretty big fish right now.”

Gene Okerlund interrupts them and says come the 21st of October at the Dunes, Fernandez has a match with this man.

VTR: Andre The Giant with the AWA Logo behind him: “Manny Fernandez. We are no strangers, but you want to hurt people, I will show you pain! Pain is something I want to give you on the 21st. In Las Vegas, when we are through you will know pain. Pain from the hands of The Giant!"

Lawler tells Fernandez he needs to worry less about the International Title and more about his own “BIG” problem. With that the International Champion walks off.

Fernandez says Andre will fall like all the rest and says Lawler will give him a title shot and when he does, The Bull will be International Champion.

MATCH 2—MANNY FERNANDEZ defeated BILLY ANDERSON in a competitive hard hitting match in 8:02.

“Dallin’ it’s home sweet home!!!”

Austin Idol joins Gene Okerlund.

“Did I hear that old man, Blackjerk Lanza out here a few weeks ago saying he wanted to get embarrassed by me again? Doesn’t he know, I am the prettiest, sexiest hunk of male specimen that professional wrestling has ever seen.  Look at me, Mean Gene…have you ever seen anything so pretty in your life?”

The crowd cheers as Blackjack Lanza comes out.

“Boy, and I use the term lightly, you are something else! I don’t think I have ever seen an ego so big in my life, and I’ve known them all!”

“Look, if the ego fits, wear it! And Baby, it looks good on me!” Idol responds.

Lanza laughs and shakes his head, “You know, I had you beat last week but the time limit ran out, at the Dunes on the 21st, that’s not gonna be a problem and I am gonna squeeze your head like a grape!” With that Lanza walks off.

“Run while you can Cowboy, cuz it’s Idolmania runnin’ wild in Vegas, Baby and you old man, cannot stop it!”

BREAK 2 ===============0000==============

USA International Tag Team Champions Adrian Adonis and Jesse Ventura come out with their manager Johnny Valiant. Adonis claims they are the next world tag team champions. Valiant says they are feeling so confident, that later in the show when they face the popular team of Superfly Tui and Prince Maivia, he will make it a title match. Ventura says it’s only fair since they’ve will beat Jack and Jerry Brisco for the AWA World Tag Team Titles at the Dunes on the 21st.

The AWA World Tag Team Champions, Jack and Jerry Brisco come out. Jerry says there is a ring right there, “let’s get it on now!”  Adonis says he likes the idea of piledriving Jerry again, but Valiant says this isn’t the time.

Valiant predicts victory for The East West Connection on the 21st and says, it’ll be time to finish the “Injuns” off!

The Brisco Brothers watch their challengers leave ringside and Jerry says they will be watching Adonis and Ventura’s match later in the show very carefully.

MATCH 3 – EL HALCON def EL GRAN APOLLO in a rematch from last week in 8:55. Apollo made a game attempt, but Halcon was able to use the ropes to beat him.

Gene Okerlund tells Halcon he has his match against Mil Mascaras for the Pacific Rim Title on October 21st at the Dunes.

Halcon laughs loudly then starts berating Mascaras in Spanish. Gene acts like he understands and nods his head. Halcon is very animated but pauses his tirade for a second.

Okerlund then asks Halcon, “Does this mean, you have a plan as you face the great Mil Mascaras?”

Halcon looks at Gene then nods his head like he understands, but then goes on another tirade about Mascaras in Spanish. As Halcon is talking away, Gene throws it to break.

BREAK 3 ===================00000================================

Prince Maivia and Superfly Tui come to the podium with Gene Okerlund before their match with Adrian Adonis and Jesse Ventura. Okerlund informs them the match has been changed to a USA International Tag Team Title match. Maivia and Tui can hardly hide their excitement as they tell Gene, this is the chance they have been waiting for.  The Polynesian tag team heads to the ring.

Then out comes the USA International Tag Team Champions, Adrian Adonis and Jesse Ventura with their manager Johnny Valiant.  The USA Champs seem to get a bit annoyed as the World Tag Champions, The Brisco Brothers come to ringside and do commentary with Okerlund.

MATCH 4 – For the USA International Tag Team Titles:
ADRIAN ADONIS & JESSE VENTURA vs PRINCE MAIVIA & SUPERFLY TUI

Having Jack and Jerry Brisco out there with Okerlund has Adonis and Ventura completely rattled and the young Polynesians take advantage of it as the control the early part of the match. Maivia and Tui switch off tags perfectly as Ventura and then Adonis cannot seem to find their groove.

Later in the match, just past 5 minutes,  Tui goes for a flying body press off the ropes on Adonis. Adonis is able to hold his ground and catches Superfly, then drops him throat first across the top rope.  Tui’s head snaps back and Maivia knows his partner is in real trouble.

From there, Adonis and Ventura double team Superfly working on his neck. Several times, Prince tries to enter the ring but the referee forces him back as Tui gets doubled up some more.  Finally, Adonis catches him in a piledriver and sends him hard to the canvas.

“That one’s for you, Brisco!” Adonis belted out to Jack and Jerry Brisco at ringside. But the Brisco Brothers hold their emotions in check.

Adonis goes for a lazy cover on Tui, but the Superfly’s foot makes it to the ropes  for the break. The crowd is back in the match as Tui shows life.

Adonis whips him into the ropes and tries for a sleeper but Tui ducks under once, then ducks the second attempt. Ventura tries to come into the ring and the referee tries to stop him turning his back on Adonis and Tui. Tui tags in Maivia as the crowd cheers.

With Tui still in the ring, Maivia goes after Adonis until the referee turns around and orders him back out of the ring. Maivia pleads his case, but Adonis is already on Tui in the corner. As the referee turns around to Adonis, Ventura blindsides Maivia, knocking him to the canvas near the ring apron.

Adonis and Ventura double team Tui as referee pleads with Ventura to get out of the ring. Johnny Valiant grabs Maivia and pulls him out of the ring. With Tui being doubleteamed in the ring and Maivia being manhandled by Valiant, the referee disqualifies the champs at 9:12.

Johnny Valiant tries to piledrive Maivia until he is stopped by Jerry Brisco. Brisco punches Valiant and sends him running. Meanwhile in the ring, Jack Brisco has broken up the attack on Tui and Ventura and Adonis flee the ringside area.

The show goes to break as Jack and Jerry Brisco raise Maivia and Tui’s hands in victory.

BREAK 4 ====================0000===================

Bruiser Brody is already in the ring awaiting his opponent as Sheik Adnan and Sheik Hussein come out. Hussein is reluctant to enter the ring as Adnan goes over to Okerlund.

Adnan says soon he and Hussein will be Pacific Rim Tag Team Champion when they face Giant Baba and Antonio Inoki on the 21st.

Okerlund asks what about this match between Hussein and Brody?

Adnan says Hussein is here to take care of “This Brody Pest!”

MATCH 5 – BRUISER BRODY vs SHEIK ARMAN HUSSEIN.

Brody gets tired of waiting and gets out of the ring and grabs Hussein and attacks him before the bell slamming him head first into the ring apron. Hussein gets little offense in as Brody just dominates.

Towards the end of the match, Hussein tries for a suplex but Brody turns it into a standing brainbuster that takes Hussein out. Instead of going for the pin, Brody does a flying legdrop on his foe and then looks and points at Adnan.

Brody drops another flying legdrop on Hussein and again he looks and points at Adnan. Adnan is furious but doesn’t get in the ring to save his partner.

Frustrated and screaming and yelling Adnan pleads for someone to do something as Brody drops a third big leg drop on his opponent and looks and yells at Adnan.

Finally, Lord James Blears comes out with a bunch of wrestlers from the back. He calls the match at 8:47 and awards it to Brody. The group of wrestlers get Brody securely to the back as Adnan enters the ring.

As Hussein is taken out on a stretcher, Adnan vows revenge and says Sheik Abdullah will hear about this.

Gene asks Adnan about his tag team with Hussein. Adnan tells Okerlund to shut up as he walks away and the show closes.

Whwn I watched AWA in the mid 80s on ESPN, I kept expecting Brody to kick Adnan's tail, but it didn't happen. Glad you decicded to take Brody in that direction.

Exciting television.

Real quality TV here...Love how you incorporate other AWA promotions...If Manny thinks he can take Andre and Lawler, he's nuts...Love the Brody/Sheiks feud...Idol/Lanza has legs...Good stuff with the East/West Connection and the Briscos...Still loving the interaction with Halcon & Mean Gene...Great stuff Carl!

As a newcomer I am really enjoying the use of "inter-promotional:, "inter-alliance", "cros-promotional" and all the other possibilities.  It seems to be a strength here.

As having written 1991/1992 Adnan, I get a real kick seeing his work here.  I don't have a mental portrait of Hussein but I can imagine his reaction.

The Brody opening was a grabber & Blears seem to be well-characterized.

Super read.

Holiday with kelly could be very interesting. I am digging a Fernandez/Andre match-up. Idol and Lanza is an old school classic rivalry. Brody may just take out The Shieks one by one.

Great show.
