Maple Leaf Wrestling presents
"SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING"
All matches sanctioned by the National Wrestling Alliance - Vincent McMahon, President

Taped at the CHCH-TV (ch. 11) studios in Hamilton ON, Friday October
19th.  Syndicated broadcast on regional channels.

We open the show at mid-ring as Norm Kimber introduces the opening match.

The Bounty Hunters (David & Jerry Novak) vs. The Golden Terror & The Wolfman
One fall 15 minutes

We cut to our broadcast hosts, Milt Avruskin & Sam Menacker.

MA:  "Welcome, fans, we have a jam-packed show, so we'll get right to the action!  Which, I know, is exactly how you like it, Mr. Menacker".

SM:  "You have that right, Milton.  The Bounty Hunters are ready to go but we are awaiting their opponents.  Did I hear that right?  The two men who faced each other last week are forming a team?"

Video evidence - The Wolfman steps into the studio - with the leather collar around his neck.  A CHAIN with a very nervous Golden Terror at the other end, trying to instruct "heel, boy!".

MA:  "A peculiar situation, indeed, Sam!  I think EVERYBODY has plans for the NWA Canadian International Tag belts.  This seemingly peculiar, mismatched pair DID debut at Maple Leaf Gardens.  Fans, we'll have a report on what went down there, a little later in the show".

We run through the comedy entrance - chain getting tangled in the ropes, referee helping the terrified Terror unhook the leash, Wolfie gnawing the ropes.  We get the bell and Wolfman grabs the chain from the timekeeper's desk and starts swinging to clear the ring!  Now the Brody-like solo crisscross / elbowdrop routine allows ref Wayne Cashman to retrieve the chain.  Jerry Novak answers the call & sets to taming the beast-man.

SM:  "We MAY get something resembling a tag match, fans..."

Yes, order is restored somewhat.  The Novaks have made several tags & Wolfman is wearing down.  The masked Golden Terror is imploringly stretching his arm out for a tag.

MA:  "The Wolfman just bit the Terror's fingers!  The referee declares that consitutes a legal tag!"

GT enters shaking the feeling back into his hand.  Now the Novaks tee off on him, with quick tags & doubleteaming.  A double-whip / clothesline leaves the Terror ripe for Jerry's pin.

MA:  "The Bounty Hunters continue to roll!  They, and ALL the tag team contenders, will be interested in the Commissioner's announcement - coming up next!"

SM:  "I do not believe the team of the masked Terror & the fur-ball deserve a very high seeding!"

COMMERCIAL 1 - This episode of "Superstars of Wrestling" sponsored in part by Eaton's - Jingle for $1.49 Day Tuesday

Norm Kimber is mid-ring chatting with Commissioner Watson.  Just as the mic is cued, NWA Representative Lord Athol Layton arrives.

NK:  "First of all, Commissioner Watson, the show last Saturday at Maple Leaf Gardens was quite successful..."

LAL:  "Next time, Kimber, when I appear, a formal introduction would be most appropriate!  We have NOT audited the financials quite yet, but you and the Tunneys may possibly have broken even, Watson.  I understand that you hope to increase attendance at the old barn next month by crowning the NWA's Canadian tag team champions?"

WBW:  "We are planning..."

LAL:  "It was a YES or NO question, Watson.  Professional wrestlers can be an impatient, unruly lot, you likely are encouraging a MUTINY with all these vague plans, your procrastination!  Championship matches sell tickets - I suggest that announcements be made about ALL the titles, the NWA is taking a dim view of all this thumb-twiddling and wool-gathering".

Exasperated Watson responds.

WBW:  "Starting NEXT week on TV, we will have teams set in pairings.  I know there is GREAT interest, but FOUR teams only will be nominated next week.  And the tag team belts will be contested on November 10th at Maple Leaf Gardens!  By that time we will also be in the process of deciding the Television and Light-Heavyweight champions!"

LAL:  "Well that sounds much more definitive and acceptable!  I'll update the NWA head office, and I hope you can manage all this efficiently, Mr. Commissioner!"

Lord Nose-in-the-air departs to much grumbling from the fans.  Watson & Kimber left shaking their heads & shrugging.

To the announce crew.

SM:  "It appears that there is a great effort being made between the Tunneys, the NWA and Commissioner Watson to get things running smoothly here!"

MA:  "I'm under the impression that Lord Athol Layton is a difficult man to satisfy!"

Norm switches from interviewer to ring announcer

Match 2 Michael W. Allen vs. "Mean Mike" Miller
One fall 15 minutes

SM:  "We've been hearing good things about Miller, he gets a chance to show us whether it is the real deal.  Oh, he's in with Michael W. Whatchamacallit!  Does this kid think the high-faluting name impresses anyone?"

MA:  "Michael W. Allen - or "Mike", if you prefer, Mr. Menacker - comes from a wrestling family and I am sure he knows he has to prove himself in the ring, not how his name looks in the programme!"

And Miller is not an easy man to prove yourself against.  He has experience & about 45 pounds on Allen.  One final running clothesline somersaults Mike Allen for the pinfall.

MA:  "An impressive debut for the as-advertised Mean Mike!  When we return, I am sure we will have some reaction to the Commissioner's announcement!"

As we go to break, Norm hypes live action this week in Aylmer, Milton & Kingston

COMMERCIAL 2

Norm has Rip Hawk & THE HOLLYWOOD BOMBSHELLS in the ring.

NK:  "Rip, your protege Vic Rossitani is in singles action next but I was wondering how the three of you feel about the tag team announcement earlier?"

RH:  "Frankly, we can be on the top of the card on the 10th without getting involved in Watson's half-baked plans.  It will suit us fine if everybody ELSE gets all fired up to start bashing each other's heads in.  We'll bide our time and pick up the tag belts after everybody else has knocked each other silly!"

With a satisfied smile, Rip turns to display THE PROFILE!

NK:  "Well, that surprises me, Mr. Hawk, I would have thought..."

As Rip is engaged in his posing, Jerry Brown, the "Canadian Sex Machine" steps in.

JB:  "We're a THINKING team, Kimber, don't even try to figure out what our plans are!  It would be over your pointy little head and these mouth-breathing, pencil-neck fans in Hamilton would NEVER figure it out!  Vic and I are amazing atha-letes, whether in tags or singles!  Big Vic is gonna show you what I mean!"

Rossitani grins as he passes his flashy robe to Jerry...who lets Rip know they've finished...talking AND posing.

MA:  "Jerry Brown, a long-time pro, was last seen in the area being MIS-managed by one Andy Kaufman.  I am sure Jerry and Vic are much more comfortable working with a savvy veteran like Rip Hawk".

Match 3 Vic Rossitani w/ Rip Hawk vs. Ron Ritchie
One fall 15 minutes

MA:  "Yet another debut on today's show!  Ron Ritchie is a well-travelled, highly-regarded competitor hailing from Winnipeg.  Apparently, his signing by the Tunneys was a high priority".

SM:  "He is looking good against the bigger, more rough-house Rossitani, Milton.  Apparently this Richie Rich has just arrived after a tour of the southern US".

Its RON RITCHIE, Sam - and Rip & Jerry are also noticing that Vic is being out-wrestled.  Rip trips RR on a criss-cross and asks Vic to step out so they can rethink the play-calling.  So, Jerry B.  gets up on the apron & he and Ron are exchanging blows.

MA:  "Despite Mr. Hawk's rhetoric, it appears to me that the Bombshells ARE comfortable working together..."

SM:  "The word you're looking for, Milton, is "in cahoots"!  The ref is now trying to break up a two-on-one from the pretty boys!"

The chaos spills to the floor and a desperate Ritchie clobbers Vic with the timekeeper's bell!  The ref WOULD be calling for the bell, but Ron has rolled back in, using it to dissuade any more Bombshell antics!  Rossitani has a mitt over his forehead & screaming bloody blue murder at the new guy!  ALMOST as loud as the VICKIE chant.

MA:  "Apparently the ref is signalling a DOUBLE disqualification...the back-up officials are getting the Hawk team to leave and Ron Ritchie gets QUITE an ovation!"

COMMERCIAL 3

We return to the interview area where our special commentator, sports pundit Dick Beddoes has the brothers Von Steiger with him.  Waving a cigar, he addresses KARL.

DB:  "There were a lot of unhappy fans last Saturday at the Gardens, when you got a controversial win over Sweet Daddy Siki - I hear your brother helped with a LOT of cheating..."

Karl:  "Dumkopf, THAT was KURT gets win over Siki!  I am Karl!"

DB:  "Oh sorry, that means YOU were the cheater getting his nose where it didn't belong..."

Kurt commands the mic.

Kurt:  "Don't try to be funny-man!  Kiniski was NOT at Gardens, he is NOT here today!  Tell me, funny-man - YOU zeem to be great friend of Kiniski - where IS Canada's Biggest Zissy?"

DB:  "Pretty bold words when you know Mr. Kiniski isn't here to answer them!"

Kurt:  "You zink so?  Well I haff ONE word for Kiniski - VEN?  And zeeing he is not here to answer, I putsch it to WATSON!  Karl and I vill vin tag belt on Nofember 10th, VEN do I get to beat Kiniski?  HAA!  ZAT is the question, big-time sportswriter, put ZAT in your column!"

We go to the announce desk and Milt & Sam looking thoughtful.

MA:  "I hate to admit it, but the number one contender to the NWA Canadian Heavyweight title does have a point!"

SM:  "Yes, he does, and I suppose Mr. Watson will have to address that as he settles the tag team situation - OR risk Lord Layton stepping in to make the decision for him!"

MA:  "Fans, there was a GOOD crowd at the Gardens last Saturday, and as Dick Beddoes mentioned, there was some controversy!"

We have clips!  First Von Steiger/Sweet Daddy, then Valiant/Tolos

SM:  "Well, all sorts of chicanery by the Bavarian brothers there...Siki will want to settle THAT score!  BUT, what a display by Jerry Valiant!  Tolos tried to brain him with a STEEL chair, but Valiant STILL dismantled the little maniac!  If you ask me, not only is Rod Steiger's status as number-one contender debatable, I'd say it makes KINISKI's claim to the belt even MORE dubious!"

MA:  "Jerry Valiant turned that match into a violent, vicious affair - nothing VALIANT whatsoever!  Err, a HARD-FOUGHT, tough match, that is to say, ha-ha!  Mr. Valiant, a real surprise!"

Valiant at the desk.

JV:  "So I can guess, punk!  Well, "Slamming Sammy" I think you hit the old nail on the head there!  So, Kurt Von Schnabel or whoever that was, beat the Sweet Daddy.  BIG DEAL!  I not only cripple Chris Tollos, I punched the hot air RIGHT OUT of Kiniski last week!"

MA:  "SO you think you have a solid case..."

JV:  "I don't talk to dumb punk kids, Junior, no matter how many microphones they wave in my face!  But, you, Sam...see if you can set Watson STRAIGHT on this!"

COMMERCIAL 4

Kimber is at ringside with Ron Ritchie, towelling down.

NK:  "Not much of a welcome to Maple Leaf Wrestling for you today, Ron Ritchie!"

RR:  "I've been in wrestling long enough to know what to expect when I face a guy with a tag partner AND a manager hanging around!  And I've never dyed my hair blonde but I know enough its time to touch up those dark roots, Vicki!"

NK:  "Ho-ho, I didn't think the Hollywood Bombshells would have made a favorable first impression on you!"

RR:  "Nope, and I heard Rip Snort or whatever his name is, say they're hatching some devious plans.  Well, I'LL HELP you - I'll take on the other Lady Clairol on next week, if they can squeeze it in to their busy schedules!"

NK:  "A challenge to Jerry Brown from Ron Ritchie!  Finally, Ron, I know you have had success in tag teams as well..."

RR:  "Yes I have, but I hear the management is just now putting the final touches on settling the tag team vacancy.  I got here a bit too late for that, but maybe, down the road, I'll have a partner to face VICKIE...AND GERALDINE!"

Sam is amused!

SM:  "I don't know how smart Mr. Richie Rich is, throwing his weight around as soon as he steps in the door!  But, as I've said before, Milton - those pretty-boy types are very easy to dislike".

MA:  "Some animosity is brewing, it seems!  In today's Main Event, two teams that have already gotten under each others' skin square off - The Soviets and The Caribbean Sunshine Boys!  But, next, we have ANOTHER newcomer!"

Match 4 El Matador vs. Buck "Rock & Roll" Zumhofe
One fall 15 mintes

The scarlet & gold garbed masked Mexican has been fiddling with his lame-brain matador cap - now he's on alert as the studio fills with...

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1xuyr_bob-seger-old-time-rock-n-roll_music

Bearing a boombox, Buck comes strutting out slapping high-5's - drops the stereo on the timekeeper's desk & leads a hand-clapping, sing-along shindig hootenanny.

MA:  "A very popular wrestler wherever he goes, is the Rock & Roller..."

SM:  "Oh, turn that RACKET off!  Oh, you call THAT "music"?  Well, Zumhofe IS a great wrestler, we're happy to have him, but somebody PLEASE, take the batteries out of his contraption there..."

El Matador is clinging desperately to stay in the contest.

MA:  "Zumhofe is a true light-heavyweight, and a champion in the division, to boot!  Denny Brown WAS right last week when he said more competition might be coming!"

NOT meaning The Matador - Buck hits a brainbuster & perches on the ropes.  When Senor M. regains his vertical base, R&R flies off with a Thesz press pin.

We go to break with Buckaroo leading the handclap to the tune again.

COMMERCIAL 5

We return to the ring.  More music of the Calypso style as The Caribbean Sunshine Boys are keeping loose.

Match 5 The Caribbean Sunshine Boys (Johnny Kincaid & Dave "Butcher" Bond) vs. The Soviets (Kortsia Korchenko & Chris Markoff)
One fall TV time limit

The Russki's were going to arrive with plenty of booing, but push their luck coming out attired in red CCCP hockey jerseys over their usual black tights/singlet gear with the Hammer & Sickle logo!  BOOOO!!!!

Senior official Wayne Cashman cuts off any propaganda by having the boys get ready, quick patdowns, a bell and Bond facing Markoff.

SM:  "The referee really got things under control & quickly underway, Milton.  That West Indies music was much better than Zumhofe's ear-splitting rubbish..."

MA:  "Well, we're up against the clock, Mr. Menacker and this is a TV time limit contest".

SM:  "Which reminds me, there IS a TV championship here, isn't there?  Well, I'll have to admit, Commissioner Watson DOES have a lot of balls in the air!  Zumhofe probably has his sights on the Light-Heavtweight belt, we'll hear about the tag team puzzle NEXT week, and MORE debuts on the next episode of "Superstars of Wrestling", I hear!"

QUITE a staunch match taking place.  As expected the Russians advocate communal effort with loads of double-teaming.

MA:  "Oh, Korchenko THOUGHT he had Butcher Bond, but Bond DUCKED!  Markoff hit his comrade with a Russian Hammer!"

And as Bond tries for the pin, Markoff tries to make amends - a stomp to Bond's head is also avoided and Korchenko eats a boot!  GREAT disruption turns into all 4 going at it.

MA:  "There's only enough time, fans, to say see you next week on "Superstars of Wrestling", where Jerry Brown & Ron Ritchie will be the Main Event...and I am sure, a LOT more as well!"

Credits roll over the melee being broken up.

RESULTS

  • The Bounty Hunters (Jerry & David Novak) def. The Wolfman & The Golden Terror
  • "Mean" Mike Miller pins Michael W. Allen
  • Ron Ritchie vs. Vic Rossitani w/ Rip Hawk ends in a DDQ
  • Buck "Rock & Roll" Zumhofe pins El Matador
  • The Soviets vs. Caribbean Sunshine Boys ends as a TV time limit draw

Ritchie with a great debut. I know it had to be tough to write dialogue for Von Steiger. Lord Layton and Menacker sure do have some personality quirks. Can't wait for the tag champs to be determined.

Really like Buck in this territory. Toronto may just be the place for Rock n Roll to thrive. Hawk and his crew look strong and will be a threat to the Canadian tag belts.

You continue to put together a great show with a limited talent pool.
