"SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING" All matches sanctioned by the National Wrestling Alliance - Vincent McMahon, President
Taped at the CHCH-TV (ch. 11) studios in Hamilton ON, Friday October
26th. Syndicated broadcast on regional channels.
We open the show mid-ring with Commissioner "Whipper" Billy Watson with Norm Kimber.
NK: "Commissioner, so many of the superstars have been chomping at the bit, waiting to hear what is going to happen in regards to the Tag Team titles. TODAY, right here, right NOW, we ALL are about to find out!"
WBW: "On this show, Norm, FOUR teams have been selected as semi-finalists and we'll determine who will square off at Maple Leaf Gardens on November 10th to decide the NWA Canadian International Tag Team Championship. The Novak Brothers will face the Von Steiger Brothers and, in a rematch from last week, the team of The Soviets will face The Caribbean Sunshine Boys! Now, that match was a time limit draw, so there ARE stipulations in place - if a match today is a draw, a double-disqualification or otherwise has no winner, BOTH teams are eliminated! In that case, we will qualify a team on TV next week".
NK: "That sounds like all the bases are covered, Commissioner. And there is HUGE news about the November 10th card in Toronto!"
WBW: "Yes, Gene Kiniski will answer the challenge from Jerry Valiant and we will have our first contest for the NWA Canadian Heavyweight title, as a CO-Main Event!"
The studio crowd needs no cues to cheer these announcements. Also needing no cues are...
(Entering Stage Right) The Von Steigers
and
(Entering stage left) Beautiful Bruce
Bruce is squawking from the floor. The Von Steigers are more assertive in jackbooting right up to the mic.
Kurt: "Dumkopf! I AM NUMBER ONE CONTENDER! I gets Kiniski, I will NOT STAND for Valiant taking vat iss MINE! Typical Canadian SCHTUPIDITY!"
WBW: "Kurt, you are totally correct. Maple Leaf Wrestling would NOT put you in a Catch-22 situation where you might have to forfeit one...."
Kurt: "CHERMANS do not FORFEIT! The Von Steigers DIE rather zan FORFEIT nothing!"
WBW: "Let me finish - and could YOU please pipe down, Bruce? I'll hear you out next. Maple Leaf Wrestling will be in Thunder Bay November 17th, Kurt. If you progress to the Tag Team final on the 10th, we'll schedule you to fave the winner between Kiniski & Valiant in Thunder Bay. Take it or leave it, sir".
Kurt konsiders.
Kurt: "JA! I will be headliner in Toronto vun vay or another and I can beats Valiant or Kiniski chust as easy! JA, zen we get KARL as TV champ, a MASTER PLAN by us!"
Norm has a query.
NK: "Well, good luck to you and Karl. But I am curious - who do you think will be in the Tag Team finals? You MAY end up facing The Soviets and there is a lot of history between Germany and Russia!"
Kurt: "Ve are EAST Chermans from EAST Berlin! We gets along vith Zoviets FINE!"
They storm out & Beautiful Bruce is in.
BB: "Well, there is an interesting tid-bit, Normie-poo! Are we finished with the "Hogan's Heroes" segment? Can I be heard, Commissioner? Beautiful Bruce Productions did you a HUGE favor setting up shop on location in this hell-hole known as "Steeltown"! And I am UTTERLY DISGUSTED by how I am treated! Not a WHISPER about my team for the Tag belts. Malumba and THE Hangman should be on TV every week! I should have more air-time..."
"Whipper" cuts him off.
WBW: "Bruce, I'll consider your team if we need a run-off next week. As far as TV goes - are either of your men ready to go?"
BBP: "Well, Malumba, I'm never really sure...but, YES, THE Hangman is ready, chief!"
WBW: "Bring him out and he'll be in the opening match, Bruce".
To the announce crew of Sam Menacker and Milton "Milt" Avruskin. Sam dabbing his mouth with a napkin, there;s half a sandwich on the desk!
MA: "What a way to start the show with a bang, wrestling fans, ALL sorts of announcements - what is your reaction, Sam?"
SM: "I hate all this blather and long-winded announcements we have, Milton. We need a break already and haven't even had a match yet! Give me the Reader's Digest version of what I missed, during the commercial".

We return and Beautiful Bruce is giving THE Hangman a rubdown & pep talk. The BRUCIE chant ends with a ROAR from the crowd!
MA: "Sam, that is JOHNNY POWERS, a tremendously popular star in our sport in this area!"
Even Sam is impressed.
SM: "Not only popular in these parts, but a man in high demand around the world - in my books, despite ALL his accomplishments, Johnny is under-rated! Oh, I don't think Brucie is happy - be careful what you wish for, smarty-pants!"
Match 1 - THE Hangman w/ Beautiful Bruce vs. Johnny Powers
One fall 15 minutes Powers makes a successful debut. The crowd is treated by Powers using THE Hangman to demonstrate rapid switches - waistlock, hammerlock, swinging Full-Nelson, snapmare, wristlock, drop toehold, snap hangman's neckbreaker, inside cradle. THE Hangman is barely able to escape the last - tries reversing but Powers finishes with a fireman's carry takeover that has the shoulders stapled to the mat.
MA: "Oh, what a technical display, Sam - a real clinic put on by a home-town HERO!"
SM: "I don't know why Bruce acts like some sort of Hollywood big-wig producer. His production company needs to fire the casting director, his team is totally miscast as wrestlers..."
We end with some chuckles as THE Hangman regaining his feet, selling how dizzy he is.
SM: "As I said - Johnny Powers is a real fixture in the sport and shows he can still go! Oh, Norm's going to interview him - THIS I will be interested in!"
NK: "A hero's welcome for the great JOHNNY POWERS - you looked terrific, champ!"
JP: "Thanks, Norm, its great to be here and see some familiar faces!"
NK: "Johnny, in your career, you've put men like Lou Thesz, Verne Gagne, Bruno Sammartino, Pat Patterson & The Sheik to a test. Really, I could read a who's who of the sport! WHERE have you been lately?"
JP: "I committed to the Tunneys a while back, but they knew I have commitments around the globe. I've just toured in Pakistan and Singapore and still have some matches set for Mexico and Hawaii - between that and my business interests, I'll not be full-time here quite yet".
NK: "One name I failed to mention from your past battles was GENE KINISKI - can we expect to see you compete for his belt?"
JP: "I hear there are fellows like Kurt Von Steiger and Jerry Valiant who will be ahead of me, so we'll need to wait & see, Norm!"
COMMERCIAL 2
Norm lets the fans know Maple Leaf Wrestling will be heading to Brantford, Welland & Barrie this week & has the next match introductions.
Match 2 - The Bounty Hunters (Jerry & David Novak) vs. Kurt & Karl Von Steiger
One fall 20 minutes MA: "Here is the first semi-final, fans, featuring two teams that have made great impressions thus far! We'll only have 4 matches today, Sam, and they've extended the time limit for these two tag qualifiers".
SM: "So I heard, Milton. Five minutes longer might not sound like much, but I know first-hand, five minutes can be an eternity in the mat wars".
Can this match go 20? There is a lot of punishment taking place so far. Karl has an armwringer on David Novak - he steps over & a vicious yank puts David on his knees in obvious agony. Jerry is leaning in, but closest to him is the shiny, sneering mug of Karl. They engage in trading threats & insults - Jerry must have said a magic word - infuriated Karl has dropped the hold and he & Jerry are now exchanging punches. Wiley David goes for the roll-up, bellowing Kurt is in!
MA: "We've passed six minutes of action, fans, we have a word from our sponsors!"
COMMERCIAL 3
We return & referee John Bonello is getting order restored - Kurt & David now hook up.
MA: "Fans, while we were away, all four men were having a donnybrook!"
SM: "Well, win this match and you headline a main event at Maple Leaf Gardens! That is plenty of incentive for all four team. Realistically, I DO expect that the Kiniski vs. Valiant title match WILL be moved to the MAIN EVENT".
Kurt and Jerry have a face-gouging, choking tussle that lands them in the ropes. Before a break, Kurt hits a lariat sending Jerry over, but he grabs the Bavarian & both tumble from the apron to the floor. The ref is occupied with keeping the partners from getting involved. Kurt drives a low knee on Jerry.
SM: "With the arrival of such new talent as Jerry Valiant and Johnny Powers, these Bounty Hunters may be in great demand as bodyguards...or hired guns".
Kurt has whipped his foe into a ringpost! Jerry is grabbing his injured back, but Kurt has NO mercy! He pulls him into the ring by the HAIR! A huge elbowdrop and a PIN!
MA: "The Von Steigers advance to the Tag Team final!"
SM: "It took over ten minutes of brutal, hard-fought action, Milton! There should be no shame for the Novak Brothers, but, really, Kurt Von Steiger has been impressing me since I got here".
Kurt has the mic.
KVS: "JA! You see! We talk how GOOD we are and zen PROVE it! We will get MORE victims, MORE glorious victory and ze whole NWA vill be at our FEET!"
COMMERCIAL 4
We return with the next match set to go.
Match 3 - The Soviets (Chris Markoff & Kortsia Korchenko) vs. The Caribbean Sunshine Boys (Dave "Butcher" Bond & Johnny Kincaid)
One fall 20 minutes Johnny & Chris lead off with a couple of tie-ups with either pushing the other off.
SM: "These teams had a time-limit draw last week - my impression is that the Russkis should have found out the Jamaicans are fairly tough, but prefer to use wrestling skill rather than brawling. See? They have an interesting style, some European catch and a little acrobatics..."
Johnny has taken matters to the mat and is stretching big Markoff.
MA: "We also saw that the Soviets are not the most synchronized pair. The opposition team is NOT from Jamaica".
Kincaid gets Chris up with a double-underhook & whips him over. Markoff is up & tries some punches. With a smile & an armwringer, Johnny tags in Butcher, who enters by dropping a sledgehammer blow on the exposed arm. Now Chris is tumbled about the ring with a series of headlock takeovers.
SM: "Korchenko needs to get in this match before Markoff is worn to a nub".
Chris counters a whip attempt & flattens Bond.
MA: "Not surprisingly, Markoff using a rear Russian legsweep counter...NOW Kortsia comes in!"
And fuming Chris don't want to leave just yet - a double-shoulderbreaker first.
SM: "Well, the commies are MUCH more on the same page, finally! It's Bond being cut off from his partner with a LOT of quick tags".
MA: "And a fair amount of double-teaming, we should point out".
Bond keeps his wits & ducks under a double-clothesline try and tags out. Well, tit for tat, the Caribbeans execute a double move, a pair of flashy dropkicks!
SM: "The referee is double-checking, yes, it is Kincaid & Korchenko who are legal - OH!"
Kincaid whips Markoff into his partner. A high kneedrop by Johnny - Bond back in to assist Markoff in leaving while the ref is occupied by pounding the mat - THREE times!
Calypso tune to accompany the cheering. And the smiling victors salute the supporters by blowing kisses!
COMMERCIAL 5
MA: "The NWA Canadian International Tag Team titles will be reinstated on November 10th in an intriguing matchup, Mr. Menacker".
Sam is blowing on his latest coffee.
SM: "The fans are behind the Sunshine lads, a very likable pair - but the Von Steigers have a wealth of championship experience, they are legends in Australia. In any case, we'll have a very good team to crown"/
MA: "And we go now to today's Main Event!"
Match 4 - Ron Ritchie vs. Jerry Brown w/ Rip Hawk
One fall TV time limit MA: "As the tag qualifying matches were fairly lengthy, our timekeeper, B.A. Alcock, says we have only about ten minutes left. Ritchie is ready, I'm HOPING that The Hollywood Bombshells don't have a lengthy filibuster planned!"
SM: "Well, if there IS a war of words, Richie Rich, I MEAN, Ron Ritchie's insults haven't helped matters...Here come the Bombshells, and LOOK, it is Ritchie that has a speech prepared!"
RR: "LADIES...and gentlemen - I'm talking to YOU three! - are you ALL going to be in this match? Gonna stick around, Rip Snort? What about YOU...VICKIE?"
Very upset trio! Rossitani stamping his feet!
RR: "I'm not dumb enough to be a PIGEON for you! I'll get two men - I mean MEN! - to watch my back..."
Already amped crowd raises things a notch as Steven Little Bear & Sweet Daddy Siki arrive! Steven asks Ron for the mic.
SLB: "I heard your story why you didn't enter the tag team playoff. I KNOW the real reason - you're all as YELLOW as the paint on your hair!"
The numbers are even but The Bombshells feel they're being bullied - Hawk has his fists clenched & cocked. Referee Bonello is leery, but we get started. Brown enters the ring & doffs the garish "Canadian Sex Machine" robe. Rossitani does an elaborate production of prissily folding it, JUST so.
SM: "Now, you know how I feel about these pretty-boy types, and Little Bear has a point. But tell me, Milyon - doesn't Siki usually have platinum blonde curls?"
MA: "Let is so, but Sweet Daddy says he is toning down his flashiness as he feels he already has the fan support. And he IS earning that as he has been very active in stepping in where there is an unfair situation".
Ritchie gives Brown every reason to play the craven coward! Siki and Little Bear ensure Brown is judicious in picking which aprons to cower on.
MA: "As with any bullying, standing up to it is a solution usually! Siki and Little Bear have not gotten physically involved, but Rip and Vic are itching to...oh, Rossitani reaches in but Ron STOMPS his arm!"
SM: "And the pretty boys are protesting a foul! Oh, Mr. Brown is nagging the ref and Rich gets a sleeper on!"
We close with much heck breaking out!
MA: "Siki has a hold of Rossitani, Steven has chased Rip right out! Hang on, the ref has dropped Jerry's arm - YES, it was the third try! Fans, tune in NEXT week for more great "Superstars of Wrestling" excitement!"
