College of Coastal Georgia Gym Brunswick, Georgia October 30, 1982 PM Referees: Scrappy McGowan, Tommy Weathers, Nick Patrick The cheerleaders come out before the matches and pass out Halloween goodie bags to the kids in the crowd. George Scott comes out and thanks the fans for coming out and contributing to today’s blood drive. Ann Gunkel is introduced at ringside. Scott says she will present the Ray Gunkel Memorial Taped Fist Tournament championship belt to the winner. Tourney Matchups (10 Minute time limits in the first round-draws decided by coin flips): Tony Atlas vs. Ron Bass Paul Orndorff vs. Wahoo McDaniel Superstar Billy Graham vs. Masked Superstar El Gran Apollo vs. Ron Garvin FIRST ROUND Tony Atlas vs. Ron Bass w/Sir Oliver Humperdink Bass hits Atlas right after the pre-match instructions and takes an early advantage. Atlas rallies and hurts Bass’s hand. Ron accidentally hits Humperdink later and jerks back in pain. Tony gets in a clean, hard jab to the jaw. Bass is out @ 8:02. (M) Paul Orndorff vs. Wahoo McDaniel Orndorff tries to stay away from a brawl, since a taped chop from the AWA champ could be all she wrote. “The Total Package” decides to wrestle more and he does some damage to Wahoo’s right knee. The chops aren’t quite as devastating but they still make the grade. Off an Irish whip, Wahoo lands a flying chop to put Orndorff way @ 7:12. (W) Superstar Billy Graham vs. Masked Superstar Graham manages to turn the mask of The Superstar around and has him bleeding. Sir Oliver Humperdink comes out and waves a briefcase of money around. Having already started a bounty on Graham with the Inoki attack on TV, Hump does get Graham’s attention. It allows Superstar to turn the mask back around and drives a punch to the back of Graham’s head. His face hits hard off the apron when he falls through the ropes. Graham just barely misses getting back in the ring in time. Masked Superstar wins by COUNTOUT @ 9:13. (P) George Scott comes out and rules that Sir Oliver Humperdink is barred for the gym for the remainder of the night. Humperdink is fuming but complies. Ronnie Garvin vs. El Gran Apollo Apollo looks lost at times without Humperdink out with him. Still, Apollo hits a wicked clothesline on Garvin that turns him a flip. He uses the taped fists to hurt the right shoulder. Without Hump out to say no, Apollo goes to the top to try some kind of finishing move. Garvin recovers, grabs Apollo, and lands a powerslam to pin the youngster @ 7:59. (M) No DQ Match Mr. Wrestling II vs. Mad Dog Sawyer Sawyer brings the dog collar into play here. He left it on the announce table when the match began. He grabs it when Wrestling II is slamming him all over ringside late in this one. He weakens II with several shots but not quite enough. He charges at the masked man but II sidesteps. Sawyer hits chain and pole when he misses. II rolls him in and hits the million dollar knee lift @ 13:44. (W) . . INTERMISSION . . SECOND ROUND (15-MINUTE TIME LIMITS) Wahoo McDaniel vs. Tony Atlas This one starts with a shaking of hands and both men just wrestle stiff. No quarter is asked or given. A controversy plays into the decision. Wahoo kicks Atlas “very low” in the abdomen. Atlas goes down harder and longer than normal. The crowd let loose a smattering of boos. Wahoo puts it out of his mind and follows up with a reverse atomic drop and a discuss punch. Atlas is pinned @ 13:00. (P) Wahoo leaves quickly and leaves a perplexed Atlas in the ring. Ronnie Garvin vs. Masked Superstar Garvin doesn’t hesitate to open up the cuts on Superstar from his match with Graham. Superstar gets desperate, resorting to ripping at the eyes with the taped fist. He beats down Garvin and motions to the crowd for the cobra. He goes in but, ironically, Garvin gets into the Gunkel Memorial Finals with a wrestling move. He small packages ‘Star @ 11:08. (M) Bunkhouse match Dick Slater vs. Roddy Piper Slater comes out in flannel and jeans and chooses to dust Piper with knucks several times in the match. Piper comes out dressed the same way. Late in the match, Piper rolls through the ring after colliding with Weathers. Slater goes down and beats on Piper some more. He, then, makes a mistake. He goes back into the ring and takes off a turnbuckle pad. Slater brings Piper back in and lines Hot Rod up for some heavy metal head banging. Weathers is still out and doesn’t see Piper throw powder. He slams Slater into the metal, instead, and follows up with a high vertical suplex. Ringsiders see Slater’s blood drop to the mat. Piper gets an unpopular win @ 11:04. (W) AWA World Tag Team Championship Jack/Jerry Brisco vs. Ole/Arn Anderson w/Gene Anderson The black glove comes out on the hand of Gene Anderson here. It isn’t used until the most effective time. Ole is arguing with Tommy Weathers and Jack Brisco. Arn is on the mat with his right arm under the bottom rope. Gene puts the glove on Arn’s right hand. Jerry goes to the top for a Double axe handle that he shows to the crowd. The younger Brisco waits for Arn to get up and is caught by the glove on the way down. Arn makes the pin and the bell rings. He doesn’t get the glove off fast enough, though. Weathers sees the glove and orders the match to be re-started. Arn argues and isn’t aware that Jerry has tagged Jack. Jack hits a belly-to-back suplex, floats over, and hooks the far leg. This pin counts. The Briscos defend successfully @ 14:03. (P) . . INTERMISSION . . FINALS-30 MINUTE TIME LIMIT Wahoo McDaniel vs. Ronnie Garvin McDaniel is booed harder, given the ending of the Atlas match. Garvin is solidly cheered. Garvin pounds away at the knee that Orndorff hurt. That strategy turns out to be key here. Both men are slugging it out on the floor. McDaniel’s knee buckles on the discuss punch he decides to throw at this point. It glances off Garvin and Ronnie drives the champ into a ring post. Wahoo stumbles toward Garvin and Garvin lays him out. Wahoo is knocked out. Garvin rolls him back into the ring and pins him @ 16:03. (M) RONNIE GARVIN HAS WON THE RAY GUNKEL MEMORIAL TAPED FIST TOURNAMENT. Ann Gunkel comes in and presents Garvin with the belt. Ronnie holds the belt up in each corner for the fans to cheer. George Scott says, “Drive home safely.” © GCW @ NWACLASSICS 1982
