Maple Leaf Wrestling presents
"SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING"
All matches sanctioned by the National Wrestling Alliance - Vincent McMahon, President

Taped at the CHCH-TV (ch. 11) studios in Hamilton ON, Friday November 9th.  Syndicated broadcast on regional channels.

We open the show and Milt Avruskin & Sam Menacker discuss the fact that Commissione "Whipper" Billy Watson has requested some time later in the show.

MA:  "Fans, I do know what part of Mr. Watson's announcement will be - you won't want to miss it.  But apparently, there is a LOT going on!"

SM:  "Very much so, Milton - I don't envy the Maple Leaf Wrestling management team's workload right now!  We have an excellent card at Maple Leaf Gardens this weekend, a tour through the outback of Ontario with another big show next Saturday in Thunder Bay.  And the word is that there may be some more top wrestlers coming in!"

Norm Kimber introduces our opener.

Match 1 - Chris Tolos vs. Pete Doherty
One fall 15 minutes

Chris Tolos makes a fine rebound.  After having his way throughout the brief encounter, he gets an abdominal stretch in place & Doherty gruffly cries "uncle".

COMMERCIAL 1 - This week's episode of "Superstars of Wrestling" is brought to you in part by Tip Top Tailors, with locations across Canada

Norm hypes Saturday's Maple Leaf Gardens show - please support the Royal Canadian Legion's Poppy Drive.  Wear your poppy or get one at the Gardens.  Maple Leaf is on the road this week in Orangeville & Orillia

Match 2 - Baron Mikel Scicluna w/ Killer Kowalski vs. Michael W. Allen
One fall 15 minutes

SM:  "A real contrast in experience, as Michael W., hang on!  MIKE Allen is likely to see Scicluna be VERY crafty!  AND I see Kowalski has NOT brought Killer Joe Nova to the show today, he might regret that..."

Mike or Michael W., doesn't matter much, the man of the hour is Baron Mikel!  In a quick, clean, uneventful affair, Allen goes down in a swinging neckbreaker...oh, does a trunk-grabbing pin count as "eventful" with this fink?

MA:  "Kowalski brings The Baron his cape and they celebrate a pretty one-sided affair!"

VTR

Gene Kiniski:  "My fellow Canadians, you all saw me get hit with a brass-knuckles cheap shot by Jerry Valiant.  Mr. Valiant will PAY for that THIS Saturday night in Maple Leaf Gardens!   The WHOLE CARD looks great and I guarantee - when the bell sounds at the end of the night, I WIIL still hold the NWA Canadian Heavyweight title".

END VTR

Right to another match!

Match 3 - The Wolfman vs. Gilles Poisson
One fall 15 minutes

SM:  "Here comes the Golden Terror again, bringing out the untamed Wolfman.  "The Fish" seems unfazed, he may have seen this savage beast before..."

Pretty quick job getting Wolfie unhooked from his chain.  The Terror stays at ringside.  Poisson must have had his rabies shots as he goes right after the furry one, landing a big bodyslam.  Wolfman rebounds and tries a bearhug.  "The Fish" rams him back to the buckles & flips him out with a snapmare.  GT is pounding the mat to inspire his hairy partner, but a brainbuster by Poisson seals the deal.

COMMERCIAL 2

Match 4 - Great Malumba vs. Ron Ritchie
One fall 15 minutes

MA:  "Ron Ritchie is pretty new here and is having all sorts of problems with Rip Hawk's Hollywood Bombshells.  Now, he may be getting entangled with the camp of Beautiful Bruce".

SM:  "Here comes the grand entrance of the gang that can't shoot straight!  They ARE working on a one match winning streak!"

THE Hangman has the lasso around the big man from deepest, darkest Africa.  As Malumba is untethered, Beautiful Bruce thwacks him into the ring with his riding crop & predicts Ritchie's imminent demise.

Ritchie's ability to actually wrestle has Beautiful Bruce Production in a flap -  Malumba is face down in a headscissors.

SM:  "Textbook strategy by Ritchie - when facing a gigantic oaf, cut him down to size in the horizontal position.  Did Ritchie use a legsweep or did big Mau-Mau trip himself up?"

Ritchie now straddling the back in a chinlock hold - positions Malumba's hefty meathooks & we have a Camel Clutch.  Tongue-lolling & eye-rolling theatrics from the Great One.

MA:  "Great camera work, Sid!"

THE Hangman going to display his bronco-busting skills!  He leans over the ring ropes & flicks the lasso at Ron.

MA:  "Good gosh - that caught referee Terry Yorkston right in the face!"

SM:  "And Malumba is a two-time loser here, the ref signals a submission AND a DQ!  Good result for Ritchie but I think he only goes to the winner's pay window once..."

We head to break with Yorkston reading the riot act to the sheepish doofus triumvirate.

COMMERCIAL 3

Commissioner Watson in the ring addresses the camera & crowd.

WBW:  "It has been noted that a few of our matches lately on TV have not been featuring big stars going at it.  That, my friends, was strictly by design!  What you have witnessed the past two weeks was, in fact, a tournament, giving as many wrestlers as possible the chance to qualify for the Television title belt!"

Crowd cheers, Norm acts puzzled.

NK:  "There was no announcement, Mr. Watson, are you saying this was a secret?"

WBW:  "Yes, indeed, the plan was to avoid any hijinks or schemes.  Norm, help me out here - last week there were FOUR singles matches.  Who were the winners?"

NK:  "Last week, Black Angus Campbell, Vic Rossitani, Jerry Brown and THE Hangman".

WBW:  "And so far this week..."

Norm clues in.

NK:  "Baron Scicluna, Chris Tolos, Ron Ritchie & Gilles Poisson.  EIGHT matches, 16 wrestlers...so eight men move on to a next level?"

A ring attendant passes Watson a TIGER-CATS HELMET.

WBW:  "Here are slips with the names of the eight qualifiers.  We tried avoiding conflict by having any of the Light-Heavyweight, Tag Team or Heavyweight contenders included.  We will have two FOUR-MAN matches next week, so Norm, please draw the names of four contestants, if you will".

NK:  "The first four names are...Ron Ritchie, THE Hangman, Vic Rossitani and Gilles Poisson!  By the process of elimination, that makes a SECOND quartet of Chris Tolos, Jerry Brown, Black Angus Campbell & Baron Scicluna.  WHAT is the next step, Mr. Watson?"

WBW:  "On TV next week, we'll feature two FOUR-MAN, single fall matches consisting of those two groups, ONE man will advance from each".

NK:  "This sounds well-organized and fair!  Those two will face off for the TV title, I take it?"

WBW:  "NO!  As you know, Norm, I hold a lot of importance for things like tradition and respect.  I have arranged for the two most recent TV champs in this area to have a chance to regain their belt!  We'll crown the NEW TV champ in ANOTHER four man match.  Automatically entered is LAST YEAR'S TV champ - the...errr, unpredictable MARK LEWIN!  And the previous TV champ is with us TODAY! - ARMAND HUSSEIN!"

Out comes the rugged veteran Hussein in a burnoose.

WITH BEAUTIFUL BRUCE - grinning ear-to-ear.  Kimber looks aghast, Watson not so surprised!

BB:  "Pull yourself together, Normie-poo, I've been telling ALL you CLOWNS, the wheels are ALWAYS turning & don't you forget it!  Beautiful Bruce Productions is REALLY gaining momentum, ha-ha!  I managed the fabulous Hussein in Texas where we wiped the mat with the Bounty Hunters!  Hussein, indeed WAS the TV champ here and NEVER lost it!  That UNJUSTLY, prejudiced situation WILL be avenged!"

NK:  "I'll admit, Bruce, a bit of a coup, there!  And your Hangman is still in the running!"

BB:  "Oh, I'm not NEARLY finished, folks, I have MORE aces up my sleeve!  The Arab wrestlers are VERY tight-knit, I was not able to get Hussein's former partner...well, I didn't really try very hard because I got someone BETTER!  The next heavyweight champ, SHEIK ALI!"

Out comes big Ali to add to the pandemonium!  Norm rolls his eyes.

NK:  "Here we go again!  Welcome Sheik Ali, I trust you had a pleasant journey from your FARAWAY homeland?  Oh, the SILENT treatment, eh?  Well, you said more than enough anti-Canadian trash last time..."

Ali grabs the mic.

Ali:  "Keep your mouth shut, little man!  What you see today is NOT just to do with MY displeasure with you Canadians!  It has to do with how the entire world mistreats us!  Hussein and I are here at the special direction of the top man for ALL the GREAT Arab wrestlers...THE SHEIK!  The ORIGINAL, THE GREATEST, THE ONE AND ONLY!  NOW, I give the silent treatment, because NOW...there is nothing else to be said!"

Points a menacing finger at the camera.

Beautiful Bruce is busting!

COMMERCIAL 4 - National Lampoon's Class Reunion MOW PLAYING at a theater near you

At the desk, Milt is dumbfounded!

MA:  "That is a HUGE, shocking development, fans - Beautiful Bruce Productions just doubled in size, wouldn't you say, Sam?"

SM:  "Twice as many bodies, Milton, but a real upgrade in ability - Sheik Ali has been a dominating force in this area before, and even the mere mention of the ORIGINAL Sheik is a foreboding thought!"

MA:  "Fans at Maple Leaf Gardens might see these new men in action on Saturday!  Wow!  This weekend we crown our Tag champions as The Caribbean Sunshine Boys battle The Von Steiger Brothers - we will end ANY speculation or controversy regarding the NWA Canadian Heavyweight title as Gene Kiniski & Jerry Valiant go at it!"

SM:  "And in a matter of weeks, a Television title champion will be decided!"

MA:  "And we have more action HERE, Sam - a time limit affair to wrap up an eventful day..."

Match 5 - "Rock & Roll" Buck Zumhofe vs. Joe Marcus
Falls to TV time limit

SM:  "If we're short on time, let's not be wasting it listening to this racket?  Is that The Beatles he's dancing to?"

Marcus is in the ring as Buck makes his signature entry (Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock & Roll", Sam!).  Parks the boombox with timekeeper B.A. Alcock & gives Marcus a real handful.

MA:  "Buck is incredibly strong for his size, fand!  No surprise Joe was ready for a pin after that big back-breaker - time is winding down, we MAY get another fall to go...We get a brief rest period and this is match featuring two men who would qualify as Light-Heavyweights, ANOTHER title needing to be decided..."

SM:  "We're being told we have to take a final break"

COMMERCIAL 5

MA:  "We have just gotten the second fall underway, fans.  Buck leads 1-0 but is applying more pressure on Joe Marcus..."

SM:  "WHY do we have MORE of that blamed, so-called music?"

Buck wonders, too - he turns & leans over the ropes and...

MA:  "Where did HE come from and who the heck IS THAT?"

SM:  "That should end the music!  A large masked man just flattened Zumhofe - hit him right in the mush with his own radio!"

MA:  "Red mask & long-sleeved top...black tights.  OH, he's looking MENACINGLY right in the camera and I have NO IDEA who that might be!"

As the intruder approaches the camera with bad intentions, the Maple Leaf refereeing crew tries to intervene.

RESULTS

  • Chris Tolos submits Pete Doherty
  • Baron Scicluna w/ Killer Kowalski pins Mike Allen
  • Gilles Posson pins The Wolfman
  • Ron Ritchie def. Great Malumba w/ Beautiful Bruce via DQ AND submission!
  • Buck Zumhofe def. Joe Marcus 1-0 in falls (TV time limit)

Ritchie looked exceptional here. I look for the TV belt to come down to Hawk's guys or him. Valiant vs. Kiniski certainly is simmering. This Sheik tandum bears watching. And, of course, who was that masked man.

Am I reading two four ways or two four man brackets? Four ways didn't exist in this time period, I don't believe. Otherwise, top notch. Pure gourmet chicken salad.

Next round is next week with two four man single fall matches.  Them two winners (you only batted .500 on your guess BTW), have a similar match in two weeks with Hussein & guest Lewin getting "sponsor exemptions".

Trivial detail is Kowalski blew his chance with Killer Joe Nova missing his slot in the tourney by being left in charge of the dojo.

Another great TV!  I love your attention to detail...I too am somewhat confused about the TV tourney format, but it makes me look forward to next week all the more...Really looking forward to the card at Maple Leaf Gardens...Good win for Tolos...Scicluna/Kowalski works so well here...Impressive win for Poisson...Like Johnny said, Ritchie is one to keep an eye on...Zumhofe is looking good, but the mystery man concerns me..Fantastic interviews as always...Great work!
