GCW TV: 11/17/82 Transfer of Power
Nov 18th, 2012, 8:51am

"GEORGIA CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING"
TAPED: SATURDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 17, 1982 @ 10 AM
WTBS -TV STUDIOS ATLANTA, GEORGIA
BROADCAST: SATURDAY NIGHT, NOVEMBER 17, 1982 @ 6:05-8:05
ANNOUNCERS: JIM ROSS, RICH LANDRUM, FREDDIE MILLER
REFEREE: SCRAPPY MCGOWAN

Jim Ross and Rich Landrum welcome the fans to the show.  Ross explains that the show today will only be 90 minutes. A telecast of the Atlanta Hawks game with the Boston Celtics will follow our show. Landrum encourages the audience at home to stay tuned for all the action here today and hit the bulls eye with John Sterling, starting at 7:35.

Ross takes the fishbowl out and puts it on top of the desk. He draws the challenger for the National Television title match on today’s program. Ross smiles and calls out Sir Oliver Humperdink. He says that the manager of champions will want to see this. Humperdink comes out, looking confident.

Ross shows him the slip. It says “Ronnie Garvin”. Humperdink says that can’t be. He’s not supposed to be in there. Landrum asks how Humperdink can say that. The challengers are chosen at random. George Scott comes out. He says that a WTBS staffer caught The Dream Machine and El Gran Apollo stuffing the fishbowl earlier. This is the way we are going to set that infraction right. If not, hand over the belt, now. Scott says he will go to the back and give it to Garvin. Humperdink pauses and says it’s on.

Ross says it doesn’t get much better than Ronnie Garvin vs. Ron Bass. But, we’ll try after this.

*El Gran Apollo/The Dream Machine/Kurt Von Hess w/Sir Oliver Humperdink defeat Super Inferno/Tony Zane/Jerry Grey after Von Hess puts out Inferno with a brain claw @ 8:58.

Humperdink gathers his men at the interview desk. Cowboy Ron Bass isn’t with them. Humperdink says he is preparing to hit the “illegal Gaylord Perry spitter thrown by George Scott” here today. Humperdink says the master of mind games didn’t get that title by not being able to adjust when they are played on him. The HOH will dig down deep and they will have a plan. Superstar Billy Graham, your challenge will fall by the wayside just like Ronnie Garvin’s will today. Nick Busick, The Dream Machine will show you what “southern justice” is all about. El Gran Apollo will rise to his greatest heights with me in his corner. You will notice Roberto Soto is not here today. Von Hess chimes in here and tells Sweet Brown Sugar that he is next.

Ross says that, later in the show, any plan that the HOH has will have a chance to come to fruition. An angry Swede Hanson has a message for the Midnight Express next.

A clip from a match at the Georgia Mountains Center in Gainesville is shown. Randy Rose and Norvell Austin walk out on Swede Hanson. Spike Huber and Steve Regal hit a double flapjack on Big Swede for the win.

The show returns to an angry vet yelling for Rose or Austin. He says he doesn’t care who comes out but “he wants a coward’s butt to kick”.

*Randy Rose w/Norvell Austin defeats Swede Hanson after Swede stands toe-to-toe with Rose for most of the bout. Rose fakes an injury after a hot shot has Hanson slumped over the rope. Austin hits a series of brutal head butts to Swede. Rose hits two brainbusters on Swede and pins him @ 8:39.

Hanson has to be helped out. Rose tells Landrum, at ringside, that the third member of The Midnight Express is coming. He will not be dead weight like this bum that had to be carried out. Count on it.

Landrum says that Mr. Wrestling II has made a miraculous recovery from the beatdown at the hands of Buzz Sawyer last week. He is up next.

*Mr. Wrestling II defeats Joel Deaton with the million dollar knee lift @ 6:37.

Wrestling II talks to Ross at the desk. He says he has always tries to do things the right way so his fans, like Miss Lillian, would be proud of him. II stares intently at the camera. He says that Sawyer needs to make no mistake, though. There is a dark side to him. It may come out in the ring, in the locker room, in the parking lot of a 7-11, anywhere. If it does, it will send this message:  Mad Dog, you started all this.

Ross says that Ronnie Garvin thought his chances for the TV belt were gone. When Humperdink’s minions were caught cheating, the scales were balanced by one more shot.  It will happen right after this.

*National Television Title
Ronnie Garvin vs. Cowboy Ron Bass © w/Sir Oliver Humperdink
Garvin comes out wearing the Gunkel Memorial Belt. Bass makes a comparison of that belt to his that Garvin doesn’t like. Garvin shoves the big Cowboy.  Bass clobbers Garvin with the National TV belt. Ronnie is busted open. The medical staff on duty for the taping checks the cut and says it is a judgement call. Garvin begs for the match to happen. McGowan calls for the bell.

Ronnie really gives a herculean effort here to just stay in the match. He comes oh-so-close with some cradles and small packages. After an Irish whip, Garvin ducks a clothesline and lands his knockout right hand. Both men go down.

Kurt Von Hess, El Gran Apollo, and The Dream Machine come out. The Dream Machine lays a set of keys on the desk. Ross shouts those are to one of the wrestler locker rooms. Dream and Apollo storm the ring. Von Hess takes out a bat to stop any other locker room interference. Bass rolls out and grabs the National TV belt.

Dream clobbers Garvin with his Gunkel belt, getting Bass officially DQ’ed @ 6:46. Apollo wraps the belt around his arm and hits a top rope clothesline. The plate hits Garvin squarely on the upper torso. In one last travesty, Dream and Apollo spike piledrive Garvin on the belt. Garvin gets to his feet, opening the eyes of the crowd wide, but he falls.

Humperdink is beside himself with joy. Scott comes out and calls for the med team and a stretcher. He goes to the desk and throws the HOH out of the WTBS studio and vows that heads will roll this coming week. Ross says it will be hard but they have more show to do, right after this.

A VTR clip shows Garvin, as he is rolled out.

*Tony Atlas defeats Nick DeCarlo in a totally clean match with a full nelson submission @ 6:03. Both men shake hands after DeCarlo comes back around.

Atlas says he put out a challenge to Paul Orndorff and his new benefactor. He brought the Mickey Mouse watch today “to find it a new case”. Orndorff doesn’t come out but a well-dressed man does. Ross identifies him as “Mr. Wonderful” Rock Riddle, who has been an associate of Orndorff in some Southwest Championship Wrestling matches.

Atlas says that he wanted to address being treated like a cartoon so he guesses talking to this “Hanna-Barbera reject” will suffice. Riddle says that, first, Atlas needs to show some respect. He says that the man who is “The Total Package” is reaping a benefit from the Hollywood connections of Rock Riddle. He is auditioning for a part on “All My Children”. Atlas says that is okay. He says he wants to go ahead and find a home for his watch. He’ll talk to “Precious Paul” later.

Atlas takes Riddle and throws him into the ring. He peels off the suit and reveals some heart covered shorts. Atlas leaves the watch in the ring. He tells Landrum, at ringside, that this guy should have gone to that audition. He’s dressed like a chick for the chick show.

Ross says the Thanksgiving Night Tag Tourney will be at the Omni on Thursday night. That will be the topic when we return.

Wrestlers that are entered in the Tag Tourney are interviewed in front of the ring before the crowd is let in.

*Superstar Billy Graham and Nick Busick say they hope to get their hands on the House of Humperdink. *Von Hess and Von Shotz say they heard the comments of the petty Americans earlier. They say that real freedom comes with having decisions made for you. You don’t have to worry. The outcome has already been decided, A HOH team will win.
*Masked Superstar says that he has all the confidence in the world that the two best singles wrestlers in Georgia championship Wrestling, he and Paul Orndorff, will show they are the best team come Thursday.
*Randy Rose and Norvell Austin say the third member of the Midnight Express will be in their corner at the OMNI.
*The clip ends with a promo from Jack and Jerry Brisco. Jack knows the winner of the Thanksgiving Night Tourney will be the number one contenders for their AWA Tag Titles. Jerry says the Anderson “bozos” better get past today, first.

The show returns to the desk. They say that last week, Steve Regal and Spike Huber challenged the National Tag Team Champions. The challenge came after some disparaging Anderson comments. Landrum says it is put up or shut up today.

National Tag Team Titles
*Spike Huber/ Steve Regal defeat Ole/Arn Anderson © w/Gene Anderson by DQ after the young lions give into their “youthful exuberance” and pay for it. Huber slaps Gene Anderson on the floor after Gene interfered throughout the contest. Arn drops down and knees Huber in the back. Ole takes advantage of Regal looking toward the distraction. He clubs Regal in the back of the head and ties him in the ropes. The Andersons triple team Huber on the floor, earning the DQ @ 9:00. The belts stay with them and Huber is left clutching his left shoulder after Ole lets go of a step-over arm bar.

Arn says to Ross, at the desk, that The Andersons will win on Thursday night.  No doubt about it. He will drive the superiority point home right through the face of Jerry Brisco, when next they meet.

Rich Landrum says for nobody to miss next week’s show. The fallout from this week could spell doom for a lot of wrestlers. Don’t miss The Atlanta Hawks next.

A lot of things that can spell doom of one sort or another going.  Very good edge-of-your-seat feeling.  Spike and Regal must learn from gaffes like that.

Good show, enjoy when realistic details are worked in.  And I JUST threw out my 82 NBA TV schedule!

Loved how you threw in Mr. II's biggest fan, Ms. Lillian Carter, nice touch...Fantastic TV!  Atlas has his work cut out for him with Riddle cozying up to Orndorff...Tough break for Garvin...Andersons still rule!  Great stuff Johnny!
