Southwest Championship Wrestling
Thanksgiving, Thursday November 22, 1982
HemisFair Arena in San Antonio TX
Sanctioned by the American Wrestling Association

Opening Bout:
Killer Karl Krupp vs. Tiger Conway Jr.

Tiger Conway Jr. defeated Killer Karl Krupp with a cross body block coming off the ropes after ducking a Krupp clothesline for the pinfall at 9:00 in the opener.

Winner:  Tiger Conway Jr.

Ten Man Tag Team Elimination Match:
The Fantastics, Jose Lothario, Ricky Romero & Mil Mascaras vs. The Super Astro Invaders, Magic Dragon, Harley Race, & Pat Rose (Rose is substituting for Kendo Nagasaki)

The crowd was wound up waiting for this match to get underway since it has the elimination rules.  Everyone is wanting to see how this type of match plays out.  In the beginning, the match was fast and furious as both teams kept tagging in and out quickly, with each man getting to see action.  The first elimination came at 8:04 when Lothario caught Pat Rose with a Thesz Press for a pin.

Next to go was Super Astro Invader #2 courtesy of Tommy Rogers after Rogers caught him in a small package while Invader #2 was attempting a suplex at 10:50.

Third elimination came when Mil Mascaras nailed Invader #1 with a cross body block from the top rope at 12:45.
Fourth elimination came as Bobby Fulton pinned Magic Dragon with a victory roll at 15:09.

This left things 5 on 1 against Harley Race.  The baby faces kept the quick tags up but were having trouble getting rid of Harley.  Romero attempted a splash, but Harley rolled out of the way.  He then nailed Romero with a falling headbutt for a pin and to eliminate him at 20:30.

After several more grueling minutes for Harley, he was nailed with a TRIPLE DROPKICK!!! by Mascaras and the Fantastics that shot him out of the ring and to the floor where he was counted out at 25:25.

Winners:  The Fantastcis, Mil Mascaras, Jose Lothario, RIcky Romero

"King" of Wrestling Match:  Loser Can No Longer Call Himself King:
Carl Fergie vs. Jerry Lawler

Fergie tried to make a grand entrance as he came to the ring in a full robe and was trailed by a servant holding the bottom of it up.  Lawler far out classed him though as he came to the ring with full crown and robe while riding a white horse!

Once the match got underway, Lawler dominated the early going.  It took a lot for Fergie to get the upper hand, but when he did, he went to work with every dirty tactic known in wrestling.  Toward the end, he and Lawler were both going back and forth with Lawler trying to get Fergie in position for a piledriver, and Fergie just trying to fight for his life.  Lawler got the upper hand, and planted Fergie square on his head with the piledriver for the winning pinfall at 15:28.

Winner and King of Wrestling:  Jerry Lawler

Lawler celebrated around ringside while wearing his crown.  A well dressed man came from the locker room area with a document in his hand and went and spoke with the referee.  The referee looked over the document and then called the ring announcer back in.  He conversed with the announcer for a minute and then the following announcement was made:

"The contract for this match states that it was to be contested under Queen of Canterbury rules (Canterbury being where Fergie claims his ancestors are from), and under those rules, the Piledriver is an illegal move.  Therefore, Jerry Lawler is disqualified, and Carl Fergie is the winner!"

This announcement did not sit well with neither Lawler nor the fans.  Lawler grabbed the document and then threatened to punch out he referee.  Fergie was regaining his feet and raised his arm in victory.  Lawler kicked him in the gut and got him in position for another piledriver.  He held him there for a bit as the crowd roared it's approval.  Lawler then dropped him on his head again before leaving with his arms raised high.

Winner and King of Wrestling:  Jerry Lawler  Carl Fergie

AWA World Tag Team Title Match:
Jack & Jerry Brisco vs. Antonio Inoki & Giant Baba

The match was a very evenly fought, back and forth contest, that saw the Briscoes retain when Jack caught Inoki with a belly to back suplex and bridge for the pin at 21:41.  There was some argument after the fact though, as Baba and Inoki both contested that Inoki got his right shoulder up just before three.  The referee was in position on the left side of Inoki, and possibly didn't see this.

Winners and still Champions:  The Brisco Brothers

Battle of the Giants:
Big John Studd vs. Andre the Giant

Studd and Andre engaged in a knock down drag out from the opening bell that saw neither man back dwon from the other.  The match was filled with clubbing forearm shots and haymakers with each man throwing in a bear hug here and there.  Andre managed to clothesline Studd over the tope rope to the floor at one point.  Andre followed him out and attempted to throw him back in, but Studd took over with an eye poke.  He then ran Andre into the ring post and busted him open.  Studd got Andre back into the ring and went to work on the cut until he was pouring blood.  Studd then looked to try to finish with his body slam.  He kept getting Andre about halfway up before dropping him down again.  Andre gave Studd a club across the back, and a blood covered, fired up Andre took over on Studd.  He beat him from corner to corner.  He threw Studd between the ropes into the ring post in the corner.  Studd got up bleeding as well.  He was dazed and stumbling around.  Andre scooped him up for a body slam and carried him around the ring before slamming him down right in the middle.  Andre then bounded off the ropes with a butt squash splash and pinned Studd at 13:30.

Winner:  Andre the Giant

AWA Southwest Tag Team Championship:
The Fabulous Blondes vs. Hector & Mando Guerrero

The Blondes took their slow easy time getting to the ring, making sure to stop along the way and badmouth fans.  The Guerreros were amped up though when the Blondes got in the ring.  They wanted to take their time getting their coats and belts off while the Guerreros were ready to get things started.  The Blondes kept stalling, and both got on the floor with their coats and belts still on.  They spent more time bad mouthing fans, so the Guerreros took it upon themselves to get the action started.  They both hit dives through the ropes onto the champs that rocked the HemisFair crowd.  They threw both Blondes in the ring and went right to work while they were still dressed in the coats!  Finally, the Blondes caught a break and bailed, and a bit later, the match was underway under normal circumstances.  Throughout the early going, the Guerreros dominated the action, and controlled the ring.  Mando though got caught up in the Blondes side of the ring, and the champs went to work on him.  They tagged in and out frequently, and utilized an array of double team moves.  It was looking bleak for Mando, but the Blondes had a miscommunication and rammed into each other.  This gave Mando the break he needed to tag in Hector.  Hector came in on fire and controlled both Blondes for a bit, and almost scored a pin on Embry, but Timbs broke it up.  This allowed the Blondes to then go to work on Hector.  They gave him the same long agonizing treatment that they gave Mando earlier.  Mando finally got in to break up the beating, and it was a pier sixer with all four men going at it.  Embry and Mando went out to ringside and continued to fight away, as Hector and Timbs squared off in the ring.  On the floor out of the referee's vision, Embry got a folding chair and attemted to hit Mando with it.  Mando blocked the shot and took the chair away from Embry.  Embry bolted, and ran around the ring while Mando gave chase with the chair.  Embry hopped in the ring to continue running, and Mando followed.  Mando finally caught Embry as he was attempting to dive out of the ring again, and hit him across the back with the chair in a shot that was so hard it would leave a bruise on Embry's future kids.  Unfortunately, he did this in sight of the referee.  It was unfortunate timing too, as Hector had Timbs down and out after a dropkick from the top rope and was already at a two count when the ref stopped and called for the bell.  The Guerreros thought they had won on Hector's pin, but the referee informed him of his official DQ decision.  They were not happy, and chased the Blondes away from ringside, and posed with the belts before leaving in disgust themselves.

Winners:  The Fabulous Blondes retain via DQ at 36:18

AWA Southwest Heavyweight Championship Match:
Blackjack Mulligan vs. The Spoiler

Neither Mulligan nor Spoiler backed down in this fight, and started the match nose to nose in the middle of the ring.  The stardown broke down into fists quickly, which BJM got the better of.  He rattled Spoiler early with big heavy shots, but Spoiler is cagey.  All it took was a rake of the eyes to take control.  He tried to wear down BJM with chinlocks and headlocks, but it takes more than that to put away the big cowboy.  BJM fought his way back into the match and had Spoiler rocking once again.  Spoiler to his credit though, is tough to beat.  He gave BJM a questionable blow around the mid-section area, and then quickly slapped on his brain claw!  Mulligan faded to the point he was down on the mat, but used both of his hands to pull the claw off his head.  The fans rallied behind BJM as he fought his way back up, and then he applied his own claw to Spoiler!  Spoiler fought it, and managed to get himself to the ropes to break the hold.  When he did, he gave Mulligan a kick to the gut.  Spoiler then bounded to the other side of the ring, but when he came back off, Mulligan lunged at him and connected with his patented Lariat clothesline!  He dove on top of Spoiler for the 1...2...3.

Winner:  Blackjack Mulligan retains via pin at 15:35

Main Event
I Quit - Steel Cage - No DQ - No Time Limit - No Holds Barred - Grudge Match
Eddie Mansfield vs. Tully Blanchard

The crowd started to grow restless as they waited for the cage to be constructed, and let out all their frustration when Eddie Mansfield came to the ring.  He basked in the boos of the crowd, and then proceeded to give several lewd hand gestures to the crowd.  Tully came to the ring with bad intentions on his mind though, as he didn't even play to the fans.

The two stood in the middle of the ring as the instructions for this match were given by the referee.  When the bell sounded, Tully lunged at Eddie and got in a mounted position and rained down punches like a mad man.  Tully then took Eddie and rammed him head first into the cage on each side of the ring, opening him up good in the first few minutes.

Tully then went to work on Mansfield's left arm, using arm bars and chicken wings to try and get a submission out of him.  When that didn't seem to work, Tully switched to using back breakers and driving knees into Eddie's back.  When he had him wore down, he applied a boston crab, but Eddie refused to quit.  So Tully whipped him hard into the corner to soften him up some more.  Tully charged in with a shoulder block but Eddie moved and Tully stunned himself.  Eddie took the opportunity to reach into his tights and pull out a pair of brass knuckes.  He nailed Tully flush, and busted him wide open.  Eddie kicked away at Tully's cut to really get him bleeding good.  Eddie then went to work with the knux by pounding Tully in the ribs.  Eddie attempted to make Tully submit with a bearhug, but Tully fough out of it.

The two continued on trading the advantage back and forth and wearing each other down.  Tully managed to successfully nail his slingshot suplex on Mansfield, but since pins don't count, he went back to the boston crab which Eddie refused to submit to.  Mansfield regained the advantage later, and caught Tully with his brainbuster, but still couldnt get Tully to submit no matter what he tried.  He took Tully and rammed him into the cage a few times to continue the blood flow.

At the 20:00 mark, both men seemed to be on their last legs due to all the blood lost and damage they had done to each other.  Eddie then pulled out what appeared to be some sort of spike from his boot.  He caught Tully in the arm with it, and Tully went down.  Eddie pounced on Tully and used the spike on his arm, which opened a big gash on it and more blood started to flow from Tully.  Mansfield paraded around the ring as Tully struggled to get back to his feet.  Eddie gave a motion running his thumb across his neck to signal the end was near for Tully.  He came at Tully with the spike, but Tully kicked out and kicked the hand of Eddie and Eddie ended up driving the spike into his own forehead!  The spike went flying and Eddie rolled around the mat in pain.  He rolled over under the bottom rope against the cage to try and protect himself from Tully.  Tully came over and stomped Eddie in the back of the head driving his face into the cage.  He did it again and again.  Tully then put his foot on the back of Eddie's head, pushing his face harder into the cage.  He pulled back on the top rope for more leverage and it looked almost as if Eddie's fac was going to go right through the cage as he screamed in pain.  Finally, it was too much for Mansfield, and he started screaming I QUIT at the top of his lungs!  Tully gave him a final stomp in the head before staggering back as the referee raised his hand and Tully collapsed to the mat.  Neither man moved for a bit.  BJM, Jose Lothario, and the Fantastics came and helped Tully to the locker room, but they were stopped short when Joe Blanchard came into the ring.  He and Tully then shared a big father-son hug to a roar of approval from the crowd.  The group then helped Tully on out.  Bob Orton Sr. came in and helped attend to Eddie as the crew started to take the cage down and the crowd began to file out.

Winner:  Tully Blanchard at 29:01

Happy Thanksgiving everybody.

Since I travel all of the time, I rarely ever see the same faces more than once.  I'm never home to see my friends I've had through the years either.  But I know I can always log on here and keep up with the goings on with the friends I've made over the last four years here on this board.  So I just want to say Thank You to everyone, because whether you know it or not, this board is one of the few constants in my life, and I appreciate the friendships I've I've come to enjoy with you guys, and am thankful that I am still able to be a part of things here.

Right back at you, Mickey.

Nice to see Conway winning here. Race still looked good in fighting of the faces, though. Interesting stip to benefit Fergie against Lawler. Great cage win for Tully. I wonder where Blachard and Mansfield will go now, if anywhere.

Great stuff.

You wonder what's next for Tully and Eddie after the big cage match.....well rest assured, they will both still be in the mix in Southwest for a while to come.

Tully has a little something else he wants to take care of that he'll elaborate on this coming Saturday on tv.

Eddie may have to lick his wounds for a bit, but I'm sure it won't be long until his battleship mouth gets his row boat butt in trouble again.
