Graphic announces

Maple Leaf Wrestling presents
"SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING"
All matches sanctioned by the National Wrestling Alliance - Vincent McMahon, President

Taped at the CHCH-TV (ch. 11) studios in Hamilton ON, Friday November
23rd.  Syndicated broadcast on regional channels.

Shocker - we open with introductions taking place in the ring.

Match 1 - "Maniac" Mark Lewin vs. Armand Hussein w/ Beautiful Bruce vs. Ron Ritchie vs. Baron Mikel Scicluna w/ Killer Kowalski
One fall NO time limit
MAPLE LEAF CANADIAN TELEVISION TITLE FINALE

Let's kick things off right.  Sam Menacker and Milt Avruskin ARE at the announce desk.

MA:  "Welcome again, wrestling fans!  This IS the finale to determine the NEW Television champion!  The match has no time limit and we want to get it started right away!"

SM:  "We found out last week there is no great advantage in who starts, but we MUST go through the formalites!"

MA"  "Try to force yourself, Sammy - helping us with the draw is Dee, one of this week's SUNshine girls..."

Entering the ring is a perky brunette wearing an oversized #22 Rick Vaive Leafs jersey over fishnet stockings.  The lucky draw gives us Mark Lewin & Armand Hussein to lead the action.

MA:  "Delightful Dee supporting the Maple Leafs, who hopefully, will show much improvement this NHL season!  Don't forget, every day in the Toronto SUN...we appreciate the SUNshine Girls giving us a hand..."

SM:  "A FINE newspaper!  Well, I see no logic in this, "Maniac" Mark had Hussein in trouble, but Scicluna refused to tag Lewin.  I'm QUITE impressed by Commissioner Watson's brainstorm of giving the last two TV champs in the territory, Armand and "Maniac" Mark Lewin a spot in this bout".

Mark takes the Arab brawler to Ritchie who steps in to carry on with the arm-wringer.  Ritchie gets Armand flipped over, then starts tossing him with deep arm-drags.  Hussein bounces to the corner of Mikel and again, the haughty Baron declines a tag.  Crowd has plenty to boo, as Ritchie & Lewin switch.  Bruce is screeching at Kowalski & his man as it is Hussein paying the price with Ritchie & Lewin doing double back-elbows.

MA:  "The Baron staying very fresh...we have to take a break".

COMMERCIAL 1 - "Superstars of Wrestling" brought to you in part by Canada Dry, the champagne of ginger ales

We return and find Baron Mikel actually in the ring - begging for mercy from Ritchie.

SM:  "Hussein had a heckuva time getting Scicluna to tag...what a chicken!"

Ever get pecked in the eye by a chicken?  Kinda like Scicluna jabbing his fingers in Ritchie's eyes.  BOOOO!

MA:  "You'd think The Baron just won a 20-man Battle Royale, he's so pleased with himself!  He's showing the fans that the belt will be around his waist soon, but Kowalski has some advice!"

That Ritchie is about to give him the school-boy roll-up!  The lanky Scicluna is able to kick out at two & dives to tag Hussein.

Some exciting action ensues with Lewin & Hussein on the same wave-length.

A word from our sponsors ALREADY?

COMMERCIAL 2 - Irwin Toy Ltd., for Christmas gift-giving, Pound Puppies &  Trouble!

SM:  "Mr. Ritchie has been in for a long stretch while Scicluna seems to be growing roots on the apron..."

Ritchie puts Lewin in orbit with a big, desperate back-drop.  Lewin is close to Mikel - who is looking the other way!  Mark assertively uses a wristlock over the ropes to ensure a tag.  The referee demands Mikel enter - he does...pivots and tries to tag Lewin right back in!  Luckily Lewin was leaning back...so Scicluna now slaps his face!

SM:  "A slap to the face is NOT a legal tag, Milton!"

MA:  "Mark Lewin seems to be washing his hands of this match in disgust, Sam!  He has some words for the fans...he's picking up his jacket and LEAVING!"

SM:  "His attitude seems to be that Baron Scicluna did him no favors so why should Lewin save his hide?  Oh, Scicluna hass slithered off the apron - HE is in a ROYAL SNIT, is he going to leave as well?  Kowalski had better be able to talk some sense into him!"

The referee had started a count-out in the midst of this confusion...now STOPS!  Interrupted by Hussein rushing in to blindside Ritchie!  While senior official Wayne Cashman is occupied with breaking that up (actually Ron was taking care of himself quite well), Scicluna has re-entered.  Seems to have an itch unter the top of one of his boots.  The fans get their dander up over that!

Ritchie is ready to resume - darn near gets decked by a roundhouse punch by Mikel, but DUCKS.

SM:  "Milton, something went flying out of the ring!  There are quarters all over the floor!  Oh, never mind, they're only CANADIAN quarters..."

Scicluna has spun around from his wild swing, Ritchie straightens him up with an atomic drop that gets an agonized reaction...Ron flies into the ropes and flies off with a cross-body block and hooks the legs!  Kowalski & Brucie wail despondently as Cashman pounds out
.
.
.
1!
.
.
.
2!
.
.
.
.
THREE!  WE HAVE A NEW CHAMPION!  Ron Ritchie is the Maple Leaf Canadian Television champ!

Commissioner Watson presents Ritchie with the belt - Ron holds it aloft to great applause.  Lord Athol Layton invites himself in to the celebration.

LAL:  "Congratulations, Mr. Ritchie.  In a few moments, I will relay the result to the headquarters of the National Wrestling Alliance, it will be then made official and entered into the record books.  Well done, Commissioner, you are getting around to filling all these vacant titles, slowly but surely!  I'll suggest to the audience that they tune in next week when I will confirm Mr. Ritchie's championship status!"

MA:  "Lord Layton can seem a bit unctious about dotting the i's and so on, but Ron Ritchie IS the champ in the eyes of the fans...after the break, we'll have more matches and EVERYONE is on the edge of their seats, wondering if we'll see THE MASKED STRANGLER!"

COMMERCIAL 3

We return to the interview area and Dick Beddoes is making a semi-regular guest appearance.

DB:  "I would have hoped that Ron Ritchie would have joined me, but instead of a clean cut Canadian boy, I have THESE TWO!  Now, you are KURT, you're KARL, right?"

Yes it is Dick & the Von Steigers.

Kurt:  "We're NOT twins, funny-man!  Maybe both gots identical BELTS is confusing you, JA?  We were in place called Thunder Bay lass week and big windbag Kiniski got lucky win ofer me for his ADORING vans!  Kiniski, I vill get another chance you can bet your life!  But we have tag belts to defends, AND Karl was NOT allowed to enter TV title contest.  Vell, Ron Ritchie, enchoy being a vinner THIS week, Karl vill take that belt, too...in our MASTER PLAN!"

DB:  "You two really think you're pretty..."

Karl:  "SHUT UP, NO more questions!"

DB:  "FORTUNATELY, Norm Kimber is ready with our next match..."

MATCH 2 - Michael W. Allen vs. Buck "Rock & Roll" Zumhofe
One fall 10 minutes

Crowd pops for the patented "Rock & Roller" entrance & Mike Allen offers a handshake before we start.  A clean, high-energy affair with high spots from both.  Buck drops Allen from an airplane spin into a rolling cradle.

MA:  "Wow, another fast-paced match in the Light-Heavyweight division, Sam.  With the TV title settled, perhaps we'll be hearing about the NWA Canadian Light-Heavyweight championship coronation".

SM:  "As far as I know, it IS a BELT, NOT a crown...but speaking of crownings, the Rock & Roll hippie-dippie has bounced back well since HIS crowning by the MASKED STRANGLER!"

MA:  "Good point...I noticed you've splurged on ear-plugs for Buck's music!"

Sly grin from Menacker.

Our NEW champ Ron Ritchie brings the belt out & joins the boys.

SM:  "Well done, Ron.  As you just heard, now the FUN begins - everybody and their dog will be barking at you...from Karl Von Steiger, the Masked Strasngler, perhaps - who knows who else?"

RR:  "I'll be ready for whatever crawls out from under a rock!  But, Lord Athol has told me HE'LL be making arrangements with some sort of announcement next week".

MA:  "Any idea what about, Champ?"

RR:  "No, but he suggested that I buy a lottery ticket, or something...HEY!"

Its the MASKED STRANGLER!  He shoves a note to Ritchie and enters the ring!

COMMERCIAL 4

We return with a shot of the Masked Strangler pacing in the ring, and cut to the desk.

MA:  "We were hoping to speak further with the new champ, but The Masked Strangler means business!  ANOTHER note, this one directed at Ron and NOT suitable for television!  I'll paraphrase - The Strangler does not care about SECOND RATE titles, only the Canadian Heavyweight belt.  He is ready to go right now, but will ONLY consider TOP contenders as worthy competition!"

SM:  "What an attitude!  Well, good luck to him, he's in there by himself with NO match scheduled as far as we know!  He's shaking the ropes...hang on, the referees are out..."

They point at him, asking him to kindly depart.  He's pointing at THEM, seems to want one in the ring.

Cashman & Bonello seem stymied.

HOLY TOLEDO, Great Malumba has escaped his pen!  He's charging to the ring with his rope arround his neck!  He pushes referee John Bonello in.

SM:  "Well, bully for big Malumba!  Not who I'd say meets The Masked Strangler's criteria, but better than nothing..."

Bonello is able to get the rope off the Great One - Strangler grabs it & starts flogging Mal.

MA:  "Have we had a bell...oh, hang on, fans!"

Beautiful Bruce & SHEIK ALI are out!  Ali at ringside, dissing the masked man.  Bruce to the announce desk.

MA:  "Bruce, Sheik Ali seems to want the Masked Strangler but you sent out Malumba".

Bruce is over-excited.

BB:  "No, no, NO!  This is VERY confusing!  Great Malumba is NO longer associated with Beautiful Bruce Productions but we're having trouble getting him to understand.  Ali says Malumba is not worth the price of his grocery bills!  Oh, good!"

Armand Hussein & THE Hangman join Ali.

BB:  "I'm sort of fond of Malumba, but he's no longer my problem.  But he doesn't know he's been fired and we don't want this maniac Strangler to take advantage of his VERY confused state!"

SM:  "Very humane of you, Bruce - he does look like he could use a hand".

Bonello has succeeded in ending The Masked Strangler from doing just that with the rope but MS is beating the bejabbers out of the man from the Dark Continent.  THE Hangman has retrieved the rope, Bruce is now conferring with his clique.  Sheik Ali sends The Hangman AND Hussein in!

SM:  "Seems like Ali is making a lot of decisions for Brucie...get that big red "X" handy, I think we're gonna have some BLOOD!"

MA:  "This is AWFUL!  Malumba IS face-down & I think he has been cut!  Armand has taken a big kick to a very delicate area & THE Hangman is trying to tie up The Masked Strangler...Sheik Ali IS IN NOW!"

SM:  "Ali is trying to UNMASK THE STRANGLER!"

COMMERCIAL 5

We return and we have something that makes things a bit exciting...

MA:  "We have ANOTHER masked man entering the ring!  That man I know, it is Black Diamond, he wrestles regularly in the area but I had no idea he's been signed...oh, he's gone right at THE Hangman & they're brawling on the floor!  Senior referee Wayne Cashman has called for the bell, Ali & Armand are trying to get The Masked Strangler unmasked..."

The Masked Strangler holds them off, the bell is in panic mode.  Will anyone try breaking up this pandemonium?  Will cooler heads prevail?

Beautiful Bruce calls for the Arabs to retreat!  They pry THE Hangman away from Black Diamond and hover around the ring.  Malumba is going to be left behind, it appears as he is very groggily stirring.  Masked Strangler stares down EVERYBODY.

INCLUDING THIS MAN!

SM:  "Well, its Canada's Great Athlete!"

He is in street clothes.  He glares at the maniac in the ring and now at Sheik Ali & the boys.  He gets up on the apron!

MA:  "I don't believe this, fans!  GENE KINISKI is ORDETING Bruce's team to retrieve the Great Malumba!  That gets The Masked Strangler's attention as it is..."

Sam is good with numbers.

SM:  "Definitely FOUR against one...SEVEN if you count Malumba, Bruce and whatever happened to the Diamond guy...Strangler is wise to not make any sudden moves here".

Milt signs off as Malumba is rescued.  Kiniski, The Masked Strangler & Sheik Ali all try intimidated glares to the others.

MA:  "Fans, there is LIVE Maple Leaf Wrestling this week in St. Thomas, Port Colborne & Windsor this Saturday night!  And on "Superstars of Wrestling" next week, Johnny Powers returns to the area!"

RESULTS

  • Ron Ritchie pins Baron Sciculan in a four man match to win the Maple Leaf Canadian Television Title
  • Buck Zumhofe def. Michael W. Allen
  • The Masked Strangler vs. Great Malumba was officially NO CONTEST.  The match was NOT sanctioned by either the NWA or Maple Leaf Wrestling

By making the TV Title match go through those commercial breaks it became something special. Great for Ritchie. Love the Masked Strangler and Black Diamond gimmicks. Rock and Roll Buck has a great place to shine here. Enjoyed the Von Steiger promos.

Great show.

Thanks.  It is a small thing, but you hit on something that I no longer do.

In other writing, I have provided match time in my results.  Here (on TV), I don't.  I trust the readers imagination or a quick reference in the writing to infer the match's length.  The 4-way title match, plus the hoop-la indeed, ate up half the TV hour.

Masked Strangler and Black Diamond are not 100% original.  I'll use some fictitious, irrelevant gimmicks as well - it is of little consequence for example, that Joe Marcus doubles as "El Matador".  You might already know, or can look it up, or wait for the story to work out.In "1992", this causes presumptions, guesses & debates - I am SO less stressed here!

Hey, any new voices from the old peanut gallery would be a treat even if you got football to watch all day.  I miss very little about working, but I ALWAYS booked American Thanksgiving as a day off to watch the games.
