Detroit + Ohio NWAC memories
Nov 28th, 2012, 3:48pm

Before I get started with Midwest Championship I would appreciate if you - the reader - could remind me of what has gone on in the territory in the past by providing me with your favorite memories from the fine promotions that have run here in the past.

Two that I partially remember are a heel run by Ricky Johnson and the heel run of the  Dos Caras and El Sicodelico tag-team. And I don't remember the specifics of those. It seems to have been awhile since anybody ran here but I still don't want to contradict anyone else's work if I can help it and I want to build on anything that I can use.

can someone teach me about Ricky Johnson - I've been told that he's basically a smaller version of his brother. Is that correct?

thanks for all the help.

My TV taping was Thanksgiving night so as I'm running behind as per usual Wink This can pay off since last night I decided to go in a completely different direction with a few things.

I had Ricky, Dos, and Sico as heels trying to overcome the good reps of their brothers. Really enjoyed it. I even had Ricky as Sweet Ebony Diamond in Georgia. Heard The Rock got his charisma more from Ricky than Rocky.

Ricky & Rocky are Canuckian. Ricky still lives in Toronto and does occasional shows. Great guy and good worker all around.

Red, when NWA Classics began I ran tne Detroit territory. The Sheik held the U.S. Title, eventually losing it to Pampero Firpo. Angelo and Lanny Poffo held the tag title and lost them to Ben Justice and the Stomper. Bobo Brazil feuded with Brute Bernard and Firpo had a series of claw vs. claw matches with Kurt Von Hess before the "Wild Bull of the Pampas" defeated the Sheik for the title.

When I booked Detroit, I had Mark Lewin feuding with the Sheik (in know, real orginal).

On my very first show, Bobo Brazil saved someone from being destroyed by Ox Baker, so then when I had Brazil do a clean job to the claw later on (via Baron von Raschke), Baker came out and gave him seven heart punches postmactch. That of course sent Bobo out of the territory.

So I set up Baker and von Raschke as monster heels for Lewin and Rocky Johnson to face. I also used Killer Kowalski as a lone Executioner, and built some things around Hiro Matsuda and Jacques Goulet as a tag team.

El Bracero got a big upset over the Assasin (Jody Hamilton version), and got a decent push.

Kind of off topic, but if I were running Detroit, Don Kent would be my 2nd top heel (Sheik of course would be #1).  I'd pick up Bobo from FA and have him and Igor as the top faces.  That way, you could build your underneath stuff.

When I was helping PPK run Ohio when I started here, I used the Crusher as my headliner and got a lot out of the duo of Fred Curry and Luis Martinez.

I m glad dream remembers better than me. For the life of me I could not remember alot. Sheik was on top, as well as Bobo Brazil and Mark Lewin came in and got big for me.

Oh, Red, just make something up!  Just kidding.  Neat seeing the responses here.  The bad seed underdog brother concept is not new, but if you got three possibilities, why not?  Ditto on the comment on Ricky being the more charismatic "People's Choice".  I used him in 1992 and did a Rock & Soul Express deal with IIRC Todd Morton.  There was a SLAM! article that gave me background on Ricky.

This is a bit scary, running acrocc the river from your research skill.  I'll come clean, I've looked at a lot of the Detroit names to use in Toronto.  But Father Time is working against quite a few of them.  About the first 5 names that popped to mind I nixed as I already was old on the roster.  My personal take is going very light on Japanese and Mexican talent unless I can make it work with reality.

There is a Steel Belt Wrestling site that helped me (Cleveland-Pittsburgh-Buffalo has a commonality to Detroit) but IIRC it only covers up to ca. 1975.

I have a feeling I'm gonna be looking west & east for my imports.  You to the south & Santa Claus running North Pole Wrestling to my north!
