Georgia TV: 12/1/82 Know What To Expect?
Dec 2nd, 2012, 9:35am

"GEORGIA CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING"
TAPED: SATURDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 1, 1982 @ 10 AM
WTBS -TV STUDIOS ATLANTA, GEORGIA
BROADCAST: SATURDAY NIGHT, DECEMBER 1, 1982 @ 6:05-8:05

ANNOUNCERS: JIM ROSS, RICH LANDRUM, FREDDIE MILLER
REFEREE: TOMMY WEATHERS

Ross, Landrum, and Miller welcome the fans to the show. Miller says that his segment “Miller Time” will deal with the National Television Title Tournament that will be held at “The Omni” on Christmas Night. He will also talk about another holiday card in Marietta, where a special World Title match will take place.

Ernie Ladd and his new manager, Sir Oliver Humperdink, storm to the desk. Ladd has two special pieces of clothing slung over his massive shoulders. He unravels the “77” jersey he wore as a member of the San Diego Chargers. Ernie says that opposing players knew what was coming when they saw this number setting to throw a clothesline. Ross says that move was outlawed in the NFL because of Ladd.

After flipping the jersey back over his left shoulder, Ladd takes the “Promises, Promises” jersey off of his right. This jacket, Hump says, is a testimony that Ernie Ladd is a man who delivers on what he says. Ladd demands to see a clip of last week’s confrontation with The Superstar. It is summarized, with the lowlight, according to Ladd, being the slap from the National Heavyweight Champion.

Ladd demands a match with the Masked Superstar on today’s program. He wants to show that “egg-suckin’ dog” what to expect when he puts his hand on the greatest wrestler alive. Ross says it is already been put on the bill, because the champ asked for it. Ladd says that the world will see the “ugly face under the sock”.

Ross tells the fans not to go away. Tony Atlas has a very exciting challenge next.

Landrum reviews “The Voice” segment from last week where Paul Orndorff, on behalf of Rock Riddle, challenged Tony Atlas to a handicap match. Orndorff will team with his advisor Riddle against Atlas. Tony comes out and says he is here and ready to go. He will stick the Mickey Mouse watch where the sun don’t shine. And he will wrap it in what is left from the tux he ripped off Riddle two weeks ago.

Handicap Match
*Tony Atlas vs. Rock Riddle/Paul Orndorff
Ross points out that Riddle is not some “older wrestler or non-athletic type”. This could spell trouble for Mr. USA. Riddle starts out just like he said. He shucks and ducks and throws in some wrestling. He struts until Atlas takes him out with a clothesline. Atlas pummels Riddle and throws him into the Orndorff corner. As Paul takes the tag, Riddle pulls something out of his boot and keeps it in his hands.

Orndorff and Atlas wrestle a hard match with both men getting near falls. On a criss cross, Riddle slams Atlas with whatever is in his hand. Tony goes down hard. Orndorff grabs the big man and hits a quick piledriver for the win. Orndorff tags in Riddle and he makes the pin, much to the distain of everybody in the studio, @ 6:28.

After the match, Riddle reveals the object as a pair of Mickey Mouse sunglasses. Orndorff places the shades on Atlas, laughing as they leave. Ross calls for the show to go to commercial.

Ross says that Atlas is okay but is way too angry to be on live TV at this point. Jim says he will talk to Atlas next week, when things have had a chance to settle.

*Nick Busick defeats El Hacon with a stump puller @ 4:58.

Landrum talks to Busick at ringside. He makes a reference to The Dream Machine being fired from GCW last week.  Slamming the billy club he brought to the ring in his hands, Busick says the former HOH’er is lucky he left before receiving some “hard justice”. The Atlanta Metro special deputy says he will be turning his focus to making sure all playing fields are level around here. He makes specific reference to Rip Rogers, the newest member of The Midnight Express.

Landrum says that “Miller Time” will discuss the National Television Title Tournament at The Omni on Christmas Night. Stay tuned.

MILLER TIME
HOSTED BY: FREDDIE MILLER

Miller and referee Nick Patrick go over the brackets for the tournament. Miller starts the discussion by saying that, thanks to the lawyer representing Sir Oliver Humperdink, former TV Champ Cowboy Ron Bass will receive a bye into the second round. Patrick says that, in a retaliatory strike by Georgia promoters, Billy “Superstar”Graham gets the same type of free pass.

The brackets are as follows:

AWA Bracket:
The Original Midnight Express vs. Steve Olsonoski-Winner to face Superstar Billy Graham
Ted Oates vs. Kurt Von Hess

Georgia Bracket:
Sweet Brown Sugar vs. Yuri Gordienko-Winner to face Cowboy Ron Bass
Wendell Cooley vs. The Original Midnight Express

Patrick and Miller both talk about the disadvantage for Cooley and Olsonoski, not knowing which Express member to prepare for. Miller says that all their contracts are being signed now with “ME, INC”. Still, Patrick says it will take physicality, not mind games, to win the National Television Title.

Freddie mentions that two other matches will be heading the Omni card. The Briscos will face The Andersons for the AWA World Tag Team Titles. Also, Tiger Mask will defend the AWA World Junior Heavyweight Title against a member of ME, INC. Patrick says the AWA World Heavyweight Title belt will be defended in Marietta, Georgia at the Cobb County Civic Center on December 27. In the first match of the night, whoever the wrestlers are that hold the National and Georgia Titles will compete for the World shot in the final match. More matches will be announced as the card gets closer.

Miller says for the fans to continue to celebrate the holidays with Georgia Championship Wrestling by attending these two big holiday cards. BEEEEE THHEERREE!

Yuri Gordienko defeats Dennis Gauthier with a sleeper @ 5:01.

Like last week, Gordienko refuses to wake up Gauthier after the match. Wendell Cooley took care of the big Russian’s lack of responsibility last week but the All-American Kid isn’t here this week. Gordienko almost leaves behind the curtain but is stopped by GCW Chairman, George Scott. Scott orders Gordienko to wake up Gauthier. Reluctantly, he does so.

Scott checks on the Canadian. While that is happening, Gordienko says, at the desk, that he is tired of all “these nosy Americans”. The next person that “tells this master Russian what to do” will pay dearly. Scott, from the ring, tells Gordienko to get out of the studio. Yuri starts toward the ring but Landrum tells him he better think twice. He does and walks out.

Ross says that the main event is next.

Non-Title Match
*Masked Superstar vs. Ernie Ladd w/Sir Oliver Humperdink
The National champ gets what looks like the final advantage when he rolls away from a leg drop from Ladd. He clamps on a cobra clutch. Ladd looks out, so Sir Oliver does damage control. He jumps on the apron. Feeling that The Big Cat is done, the masked man drops Ladd.

He grabs Humperdink and runs him across the apron into a turnbuckle pad. While he does that, Kareem Muhammad comes out and puts something into Ladd’s elbow pad. When Masked Superstar turns around, he is slammed with a wicked clothesline.  He goes down like he was shot. Ladd pins The Superstar @ 9:33
.

After the match, Cowboy Ron Bass, Kurt Von Hess, and Candy join Ladd in beating on Superstar. Mr. Wrestling II, Superstar Billy Graham, and Nick Busick come in to even the odds. The heels bail. In the melee, Masked Superstar and Mr. Wrestling II back into each other. They both put up their fists. Superstar drops down and slides out of the ring. Graham says to Ross, at the desk, that taking care of the HOH is going to require the joining of some opposite and parallel forces. Wrestling II agrees. Masked Superstar, standing off camera, leaves without a verbal comment.

End of the first hour

“Georgia Championship Wrestling”
Hour Two

George Scott comes out again to the interview desk. He says that this has been a busy day. Since the attack two weeks ago on Ronnie Garvin, Scott has done his best to make sure that GCW is rough at tough in the ring and at the ringside area. Nowhere else. Fair and square and right down the middle. Scott asks to see two film clips about what has become a personal problem: Roddy Piper.

The first one shows Scott reversing a title changing decision involving Piper beating Dick Slater in Columbus. He, then, shows Piper bloodying Slater with the now-dreaded gold club in a post-match attack in Rome. The show returns to the studio, where Ross says it looks like the Chairman has his hands full with the Scotsman.

Piper comes out. Piper comes out in a doctor’s coat with a stethoscope around his neck. He says he may need to call for a Waaambulance for Scott. Piper tries to use the instrument to check “Scott’s weak heart”. Scott brushes off Piper. Roddy loses it. He gets in Scott’s face. Piper tells him to keep his hands off Roddy Piper or he will be taken care of.

Dick Slater, with the Georgia Heavyweight Title around his weight, comes out and tells Piper to chill with the Hollywood antics. He may be good at tearing up furniture that doesn’t fight back but let’s see how he does with the Georgia champ right here today. Scott says it will happen. Piper rubs his hands together in anticipation. He leaves, telling one last thing to Scott. Piper says to “leave it to the wrestlers”.

Ross says that the former National Television Champion is up next.

*Cowboy Ron Bass w/Sir Oliver Humperdink defeats RT Tyler with a bulldog @ 5:12.

Right before the pin, Humperdink goes behind the interview curtain. He comes out with a bullwhip. He gives it to Bass, who uses it to get in a few extra licks on Tyler. The winning duo talks to Ross and Landrum at the desk.

Bass refers to the bullwhip by the name “Betsy”. He talks about the National Television Title being stripped from him. From this point on, he will use Betsy to take something from every wrestler he meets. He will take skin off their hides. That will make some title belt when Bass puts all those hides together.

Landrum says that Kurt Von Hess is ready for the Christmas Night festivities at The Omni. He will be up next.

*Kurt Von Hess w/Sir Oliver Humperdink defeats Georgia Hornet with a claw hold @ 7:00.

Von Hess and Humperdink join Landrum at ringside. Von Hess says that everybody seems to have forgotten about him and his partner Karl Von Shotz. He says that is okay with him. In fact, that is how he likes it. You “southern American weaklings” are weak because your easy life has made you soft. The “German strength of heart” will bring him to the top on Christmas Night, according to Von Hess. The final thought is for Americans to continue to take him for granted.

Landrum says he is ready for “The Voice” next.

THE VOICE
HOSTED BY: RICH LANDRUM
A split screen shows Ole and Arn Anderson joining the program from the den in Ole’s home. Jerry and Jack Brisco talk from Jack’s home in Florida. The first conflict of the segment comes after the review of a clip from a 60-minute draw in Macon. Arn is covering Jerry, as the bell rings after a two count. Arn starts screaming “one more second, one more second”. Ole tries to calm him down and says that more time would have brought the belts back to where they belong.

Jack is the voice of reason for his team. He says that he heard his Civics teacher in high school, who doubled as the baseball coach, say something that he will never forget. One call doesn’t really decide any athletic contest. You could have hit the ball when you swung and missed. You could have taken the extra base. You could have slid harder to take away the double play. The Briscos know to go back and take care of those things. That is why they will remain AWA World Tag Champs.

Arn is livid. He resents the inference that the Andersons aren’t “thinking man’s wrestlers”. Jerry says Arn is proving the point right now. Jerry has a suggestion, though. He says Jack and he will accept the $20,000 challenge made by Ole and Arn last week. He proposes that the match be a NO TIME LIMIT MATCH and start right after the 6:05 opening. Ole says you have a deal.

Landrum tells the fans not to miss next week.

*Rip Rogers defeats El Rayo with an abdominal stretch, aided by a rope pull, @ 6:24.

Rogers comes to ringside with Randy Rose and Norvell Austin. Rose says it was a joint effort to come up with the idea of signing all their contracts as “ME, INC.” Austin said he talked it over with an old friend, who said if you want to change things you have to work within the system. Rogers throws out this thought to end the promo: What would happen if The Midnight Express were to win the National Television Title?

Ross says the main event, for this hour, is next.

*Roddy Piper vs. Dick Slater
This match is not for the Georgia Heavyweight Title. Late in the bout, Slater and Piper double clothesline each other over the top rope. Slater looks the worse for wear on the fall to the WTBS floor. Piper goes for his “new tag partner”, the golf club. George Scott comes out and grabs the club out of the Rowdy One’s hands. Piper starts shoving the Chairman. Slater slides back in and Piper loses track of Weather’s counting. The ref gets to 10 and Piper is COUNTED OUT @ 11:04. (One commercial break)

Scott walks back with Slater and the title belt. Piper goes by the desk and rips the mike out of the hand of Jim Ross. He says that Scott “is finished.” Ross signs off the show.

Real good TV...Not really digging the Mickey Mouse stuff, but I'm sure a payoff is coming...TV tournament looks good...Gordienko is building a strong bad reputation...Loved the Superstar/Ladd match-up...Can Superstar trust the men who saved him and vice versa?  Von Hess looks strong...Andersons/Briscos feud just keeps getting better...Piper/Slater was good, but i fear Scott is going to wind up getting hurt...Great stuff Johnny!
