Dec 4th, 2012, 7:15am

Windy City Championship Wrestling presents…
NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS 1982
Chicago, Illinois
UIC Pavilion
Sunday December 2, 1982  Bell 7pm

Match 1:
RICKY RICKARD vs LARRY JONES. Rickard wins at 6:27 with a missile dropkick from the top turnbuckles.

Match 2:
FRANK MONTE vs JODY ARNOLD. Arnold wins at 6:00 with a brainbuster.

Match 3:
SUPERFLY TUI & PRINCE MAIVIA vs SONNY ROGERS & LARRY SHARPE. Tui nails Rogers with an elbowsmash from the second rope, then Maivia hits his prone opponent with a “Superfly” splash from the top turnbuckles for the win at 8:31.

Match 4:
RIC FLAIR vs BILLY ANDERSON. Anderson is game in this match with Flair, following a lot of pomp as the “Nature Boy” entered the ring. At one point, Anderson is able to throw Flair from the top turnbuckles but at 10:01, Ric gets the win in his Chicago debut match with the figure four leglock.

Match 5: Six Man Tag Team Match:
GREG GAGNE, BLACKJACK LANZA, & JULES STRONGBOW vs NICK BOCKWINKEL, SHEIK ADNAN EL KAISSEE & KEVIN KELLY w/Gentleman Jimmy Holiday.  Bockwinkel, Adnan and Kelly get the win in this match when Bockwinkel pins Strongbow at 13:45.

Match 6: For The American Television Title:
LARRY ZBYSZKO [C] vs BAD BAD LEROY BROWN. Zbyszko wins by disqualification at 9:45 when Brown gets tired of Larry’s stalling and eventually ties him in the ring ropes. Leroy pounds the trapped Zbyszko bloody, ignoring the referee’s warnings and gets disqualified as a result.

Match 7: Special Grudge Match:
ANDRE THE GIANT vs THE SHIEK. Andre came out with bandages wrapped around his eyes and was led to the ring by promoter Bob Luce. Adnan joined his tag team partner, The Sheik and the two laughed as Andre came to the ring with a roar of applause. The Sheiks had their back to Andre and taunted the crowd. The crowd cheered as Andre unwrapped his bandages as the bell rang. When the Sheiks turned around they saw Andre, his eyes glaring at them. Adnan immediately ran to the back to escape, The Sheik wasn’t as fortunate as Andre battered him all over the ring. At 10:34, The Giant picked up the win by pinfall.

Match 8: For the AWA World Junior Heavyweight Title:
TIGER MASK [C] vs TIM HORNER [USA Junior Heavyweight Champion] w/Gentleman Jimmy Holiday. Horner and Mask put on a lightning fast paced match with neither man holding an advantage for very long. Mask flipped out of a sleeper hold by Horner and 14:02 connected with a hurricanrana into a pin for the win to retain the world title.

Match 9: For the Heartland Heavyweight Title:
PAUL ELLERING [C] vs JIMMY BRUNZELL. Brunzell dominates Ellering from the start which brings out Doomsday: Animal and Konga. Brunzell doesn’t get tripped up much by the two on the outside of the ring. But when the challenger snares Ellering in an abdominal stretch and Ellering cannot seem to power out of it, the tag team hits the ring and attacks Brunzell. The referee gives the match to Brunzell by disqualification at 8:22, but the three beat up on Brunzell until the USA Tag Team Champions, Bobby Jaggers and Steve Williams hit the ring. Eventually, the referee gets Brunzell out of the ring and he his helped to the back by Greg Gagne. Ellering argues and eventually leaves ringside, leading to…

Match 10: For the USA Tag Team Titles:
STEVE WILLIAMS & BOBBY JAGGERS [C] vs DOOMSDAY: ANIMAL & KONGA. No real wrestling here as it was basically a tag team fight that started during the Ellering-Brunzell match. Both teams used power moves such as powerslams and clotheslines but neither could get the win on the other. During Jaggers’ bulldog attempt, Konga throws him off and he slams into referee Marty Miller. Once the referee goes down, all four men start fighting in the ring again. Miller, in obvious pain, gets to his feet and realizes he cannot regain control of the match. He disqualifies both teams at 15:09, before stumbling out of the ring onto the floor. The two teams battle back to the dressing room.

Match 11: For USA Heavyweight Title: [Two referees assigned to the match]
BOB BACKLUND [C] vs KEN PATERA w/Johnny Valiant. Referee Jimmy Bunning comes out before the ring announcements and after Patera and Backlund are introduced the ring announcer tells the audience filling in for the injured Miller is VP and Director of Operations, Buddy Rogers. Valiant isn’t happy with the decision but eventually simmers down. The match is a classic from Backlund and Patera.

Patera catches the champion in his swinging neckbreaker at around the 20 minute mark. While Backlund is going for a ride, Bunning is knocked from the ring onto the floor. Rogers goes to check on Bunning as Backlund, once on the mat, musters all of his strength to maneuver out of the hold. Backlund, in a quick moment, side suplexes Patera, sending both men hard to the canvas while Rogers reenters the ring.

As both men slowly get up, Backlund captures Patera in a small package and gets a count of two from Rogers. Patera shifts his weight and has Backlund pinned. Rogers makes his count while, Bob’s shoulders are down…1...Patera holds on….2…Bob shifts his weight and the combatant’s legs start to separate…THREE! Both men break apart! Backlund and Patera both look confused while the ringside fans tell Rogers, Backlund kicked out. Rogers calls for the bell at 24:49, and hands the belt to PATERA!!!! Rogers raises the new champion’s hand as Valiant rushes in to celebrate. Backlund is stunned as Rogers tells him what happened.

Match 12: For The AWA World Tag Team Titles:
JACK & JERRY BRISCO  [C] vs JESSE VENTURA & ADRIAN ADONIS w/Johnny Valiant. Valiant still excited coming off his Empire’s gaining of the USA Heavyweight Title is crowing at the champions. Valiant shuts up once the match begins as The Brisco Brothers put on a clinic against the challengers. Adonis and Ventura, in the early going cannot mount an offense against Jerry nor Jack.

At around the 10minute mark, Adonis rams Jerry into Ventura’s knee. This slows the Briscos considerably and allows the challengers to mount an offense. Adonis and Ventura dominate Jerry attacking his neck, while Jack doesn’t fare too much better, getting the worst end of Adonis’ sleeper.

At the 25minute mark, it was Ventura capturing Jerry in the figure four leglock. Valiant faked an entry into the ring, that distracted Jack. Adonis then climbed onto the second rope and did a splash onto the legs of Ventura and Jerry. Jack and the referee turned to see what had happened but Adonis was already out of the ring, and the younger Brisco was in a world of hurt. Brisco tried to attack Adonis but the referee, Jimmy Bunning, pulled him away. Once, Jack was out of the ring, Ventura yelled for Brisco to submit, but Jerry wouldn’t do it.

Finally, Ventura released the hold and tagged in Adonis who grabbed the injured leg and turned Jerry over in a half crab. At 31:12, Jerry Brisco had more pain then he could bear and submitted under the pressure of Adonis’s half crab. Adonis immediately released the hold and the ring announcer made the announcement: “At 31 minutes and 12 seconds, Jerry Brisco submitted the referee, James Bunning has awarded the match to the NEW AWA WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS, ADRIAN ADONIS AND JESSE VENTURA.

After the match, Jack was able to get Jerry to the floor at ringside. Jerry was in a lot of pain as he held his knee. Jules Strongbow came out to help as did Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell. In the ring however, Ventura and Adonis were parading the AWA Tag Team Titles with Valiant as they were joined by new USA Heavyweight Champion Ken Patera and American Television Champion Larry Zbyszko.

Match 13: For the AWA World Heavyweight Title:
WAHOO MCDANIEL [C] vs MANNY FERNANDEZ. Fernandez before the match started got on the microphone saying he was going to end this night the right way, not just beating, but humiliating Wahoo McDaniel here in Chicago and becoming World Heavyweight Champion. Wahoo looked unimpressed.

Once the match started, with in the first 10minutes both men were bleeding as the chops and heavy poundings could be heard throughout the arena.

Neither man was able to gain much of an advantage until beleaguered referee Jimmy Bunning was knocked down in a collision with Wahoo. Fernandez decided to take advantage of the situation and piledrive McDaniel to the mat. Bunning still on the mat not facing the action, as Manny taunted the fallen champion then went outside the ring to climb the turnbuckles.

As Fernandez is running his mouth a man in Milwaukee Brewers Baseball cap and a cigar in his mouth made his way down to ringside. With the referee still down and Wahoo still on the mat, Fernandez made it to the top of the turnbuckles. As he was about to leap off, the man in the baseball cap, got up on the ring apron and pushed Fernandez off to the side. Manny landed groin first hard on the top rope, then fell into the ring. Wahoo, bleeding and on his knees crawled over to his injured opponent and made the cover as Bunning made a very weak three count at 19:24.

The man in the Brewers’ cap then grabbed the microphone as the crowd cheered and yelled, “How about dat!”

GOOD NIGHT FROM CHI-TOWN!

Fernandez is going to wake up wanting to CRUSH somebody! Great win by Ventura and Adonis. Rogers being the man who counted Backlund's shoulders down is going to resonate all over Heartland. Good to see Jaggers and Williams standing tall in their defense. Brown revealed his true colors but I know the fans were cheering, anyhow. Bockwinkel and his expertise will always win out. A Night of Champions certainly can't happen without Flair.

Great stuff.

Very good job getting this built up and executed with a lot of interest in what is next.  Dandy little ending with the tease!

My personal take is there was a little too much length - the prelims seemed just "extra" - unless there is something brewing.  However, seeing Flair in match 4 of 13 is really intriguing.

One of the strengths in your work is a good way of handling the various ages realistically.  Horner vs. Tiger Mask is a good example, the sort of result that looks good for young Horner.

A very good "arc" from start to finish of building a big show.

Great card!  Congrats to Patera and Adonis & Ventura...I think the placing of Flair on this card was perfect to introduce the Chicago fans to him...Great 6-man...Leroy needs to focus, he has Larry Z's number he just needs patience...Good to see Andre exact some revenge...Mask/Horner was very good considering Horner's inexperience...Ellering is lucky to still be Champion...Doomsday is one of my favorite teams right now...Rogers' call of the pin seems a bit fishy to me...I know Valiant is going to be gloating on TV next week...Good to see Crusher get one up on Manny...Fantastic work!
