Maple Leaf Wrestling presents
"SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING"
All matches sanctioned by the National Wrestling Alliance - Vincent McMahon, President

Taped at the CHCH-TV (ch. 11) studios in Hamilton ON, Friday December 7th.  Syndicated broadcast on regional channels.

We open the show in the interview area, Norm Kimber standing with newcomer "Rocky" Ed Boulder.

NK:  "Rocky, you make your Maple Leaf TV debut today against a veteran tag team,  Have you chosen a partner?"

REB:  "I was stuck until I heard a guy called BLACK DIAMOND wanted in on the action...I got sorta confused, turns out he's a white guy in a mask!  Hey, B.D., come over an' tell the fans what you told me..."

BD:  "Thanks, Rocky Ed, I really appreciate it, I'm on a MISSION, I want to get THE Hangman OUT of here, heck, I want to RIP his MASK off so he NEVER shows his face ANYWHERE!"

The masked man is getting real agitated, ripping & strangling hand gestures, froth spraying from his mouth,,,ugh.

We join Sam Menacker & Milt Avruskin at the desk.

SM:  "Well, that was brief and to the point, Milton!"

MA:  "Indeed it was, Sam, and welcome again to another big episode of  "Superstars of Wrestling", everyone!  We have FIVE matches scheduled and I'll be speaking a bit later with the tag team of THE SOVIETS...but let's get this busy night of action started!"

Match 1 - Johnny War Eagle vs. Don Arakawa
One fall ten minutes

MA:  "Two men in the Light-Heavyweight division who both debuted last week.  Another Light Heavyweight, El Matador has a HUGE opportunity on the show taking on TV champ Ron Ritchie".

SM:  "I like this lottery idea of Lord Layton, it really spices things up!  And War Eagle's tag partner really had his butt kicked by THE HOLLYWOOD BOMBSHELLS last week, I'm speaking of Chief Running Bare..."

MA:  "It's STEVEN LITTLE BEAR and yes, he was injured.  Be honest, Sam - it's the SUNshine Girls who are spicing things up for you, isn't it?"

Don't forget, the Bombshells lowered the boom on War Eagle last week, too.  Arakawa hits a sit-out powerbomb for a fairly quick win.

SM:  "Arakawa-san has started off on the right foot here - I am sure he'll be interested in Commissioner Watson FINALLY making an announcement about the Light-Heavyweight belt on NEXT week's show.  And Milton, it's the excitement of the random draw I like - by the way, do we get a blonde or brunette this week?"

COMMERCIAL 1 - This week's show brought to you by Loblaws - here's William Shatner, "At Loblaws, more than the price is right."

We return and Milt has an interview!  The glowering Russian tandem of Kortsia Korchenko & Chris Markoff.

MA:  "Fans in Ottawa, pay close attention!  This Saturday, Gene Kiniski WILL defend the NWA Canadian belt - he's accepted the challenge of Comrade Markoff!"

CM:  "I WANT this to be in CAPITAL, and KINISKI is NOT defending, he is being defeating!"

MA:  "We'll have to see the result of the ACTUAL MATCH, Comrade...and Korchenko, you want a match as well".

KK:  "I challenge ALL Canadian, EVERY American, THE SOVIETS will win it all in OTTAWA and take over GOVERNMENT!"

To the ring where an excited EL MATADOR is more than ready!

Match 2 - Ron Ritchie © vs. El Matador
One fall 10 minutes TV TITLE MATCH

Clip of the show's theme heralds Ritchie entrance.  As well, we have a shot of Milt returning to his seat.  Not only is the lottery set-up in place, this week's SUNshine girl is in Milt's seat having a chat with Sammy!

SM:  "We'll see you in JUST a bit, Debbie!  Mr. Avruskin wants his chair!"

MA:  "We get the bell and are underway...PARDON MY INTERRUPTING, there, Sam..."

SM:  "Remember last week when El Matador had his name drawn, he must have thought he had won a REAL lottery jackpot!"

Well he's in a jackpot here, Ritchie has no problems whatsoever.  Ron climbs the GOLDEN LADDER with a Half-Nelson submission!

MA:  "El Matador will be able to tell all his amigos back in Mexico about his big chance!  Missed it by THAT much as they say...hold it down, Sam, I see her headed back..."

Debbie?  Blonde Argos cheerleader - even brought the poms!  Gives them a shake as she squeeeezes by Sam...

Deb:  "Watch it, Gramps...where do I stick my hand...good!  Looks like "Armando" something..."

MA:  "Well, Debbie, it sure must have been exciting cheering on the Grey Cup winners..."

Deb:  "In that MONSOON?  AH-CHOO, caught a helluva..."

Sam not so gracious now.

SM:  "We're really pressed for time, sweetie, sorry to cut off your fascinating story..."

MA:  "Armand Hussein gets a second chance at the TV title!  Could you straighten out the cards on the pyramid, SAM?"

COMMERCIAL 2 - Ad for Arctic Cat snowmobiles

We return with a preening Beautiful Bruce in the ring.  He's trying to get "Hey Hey Goodbye" going.  BRUCIE chant is drowning him out.

BB:  "What GREAT news, next week it is GOOD BYE to Ritchie and WELCOME BACK Armand Hussein as TV champ!  Pretty good planning on MY part, huh?  A tune-up today, TV title next week!"

Hussein speaketh!

AH:  "That is true old friend!  And can anyone explain why the Black Diamond or ANY one would want to mess with THE Hangman?"

In runs said Black Diamond and "Rocky" Ed!  ROCKY chants as the duo rip Hangman's rope away.  New ref Danny Marsh is tasked with gaining control!

Match 3 - Ed Boulder & Black Diamond vs. Armand Hussein & THE Hangman w/ Beautiful Bruce

MA:  "Don't forget, fans, stiil to come will be Johnny Powers taking on "Killer" Joe Nova!"

SM:  "A fine match, and we have just gotten the full slate for the Ottawa card on the 9th!  You know, Milton, that could become a BLACK DAY in Canadian history...if THE SOVIETS win there, they might as well set up shop!  Take over the Senate, your Congress..."

MA:  "Parliament!"

SM:  "No thanks, haven't smoked in years...well here comes the rather pompous Sheik Ali!  It looks like he's telling Brucie he is NOT pleased how things are transpiring here!"

Beautiful Bruce Productions is not boffo today!  Rocky Ed has laid a whuppin' on Hussein, the soon-to-be TV challenger.  And as Black Diamond seems to be making progress of a de-mask-ification of THE Hangman...well Bruce & Ali have agreed!

MA:  "Hussein pulls Black Diamond's hands apart, Hangman rolls out & Armand is right behind!!  They QUIT!"

Sheik Ali steps in with Norm's mic and makes it official, he's found a white towel and throws it down in the middle of the ring.

Ali:  "That's enough, raise their stinking hands...good, now GO FORTH!  AM-SCRAY!"

Black Diamond & Boulder do exactly that.

Ali:  "Bruce bring those clowns you call championship material back in, this has gone far enough!"

A very meek trio is there to listen.

Ali:  "Shut up, the bad news will be second!  First of all, GOOD NEWS!  This ramshackle excuse of a wrestling promotion has a big HOLIDAY SPECIAL on December 29th.  THAT date was chosen by ME!  Because I answer to one man and one man only - THE SHEIK!  The original, the leader, the Grand Vizier of ALL Arab wrestling stars!  And HE has chosen THAT DATE based on the advice of his astrologists as the date he is PRE-ORDAINED, PROPHESISED...to defear GENE KINISKI!"

Crowd buzzes over THAT!

Ali:  "I need no zodiac or soothsayer to tell me THIS!  Hangman and Hussein are UNWORTHY to be at my side!  I have tried partnering with Hussein, but he is NOT of NOBLE BLOOD, he is a COMMONER, a humble spawn of goat-herds!  If you are not the Television champ in 7 days hence, I suggest you take a magic carpet ride!"

Hussein is in full grovel, pleading & supplication mode.  Ali carries on.

Ali:  "And the Black Diamond gets his wish!  Next week he can have a mask vs. mask match with this idiot.  Win or lose Hangman - you have NO place with me...you are the WEAKEST of weak links...good-bye!"

Holy doodle, Sheik Ali drops the mic and sweeps off...ignoring Brucie!

COMMERCIAL 3

Before the next round of introductions, Norm Kimber plugs the current tour.  Saturday in Ottawa, Sunday in Whitby & Tuesday in Paris (Paris ONTARIO).  The card in Ottawa at the Civic Centre features Chris Markoff challenges the NWA Canadian Heavyweight Champion Gene  Kiniski, the Tag Team champions the Von Steigers take on The Bounty Hunters, Kortsia Korchenko has HIS challenge answered by Black Diamond, Johnny Powers versus Armand Hussein, four Light-Heavyweights square of in a tag match and also appearing will be the Caribbean Sunshine Boys, "Rocky" Ed  Boulder, "Mean" Mike Miller and "Mr. Irresistible" Sweet Daddy Siki!

MA:  "Great balls of fire, Sheik Ali sure said a mouthful!  I ALMOST felt bad for Hussein - mere minutes after getting word on a chance to get on the GOLDEN LADDER, then finds out he might get the GOLDEN HANDSHAKE!  Not a very encouraging thing to hear!"

Sam still stewing about cheerleader Debbie?

SM:  "No, there has been PLENTY of discouraging words today!  I wonder what big Gene Kiniski thinks about facing THE SHEIK!"

MA:  "Plans are being made for the Dec. 29th HOLIDAY SPECIAL at Maple Leaf Gardens!  We;ll crown our LAST two champions, the NWA Canadian Light-Heavyweight  AND the NWA Canadian Women's belt will be settled".

Killer Kowalski looking confident as he leads his man in.

Match 4 - Johnny Powers vs. Killer Joe Nova w/ Killer Kowalski
One fall 10 minutes

A big hand as the local hero enters and we get the bell.

MA:  "Fans, I've educated myself about this Joe Nova and was quite surprised!  Not only has he been in the ring with such stars as Lou Thesz, he not long ago had a big match in Los Angeles against Bob Backlund, who was holding a pretty illustrious belt at the time!"

SM:  "Oh, he is no slouch and will give this "Golden Adonis" Mr. Powers a battle!  Nova seems to be a bit of the lone wolf type, having Kowalski guiding him might turn the trick!"

Kowalski is very focussed with directions and warnings for his charge.

MA:  "Without Baron Scicluna requiring Kowalski's attention, maybe we'll be hearing more from Nova..."

So far so good, until big Joe charges after whipping Powers into the buckles.  First, two boots in the chops, then a nifty headscissors takeover.  Powers exchanges unpleasantries with Kowalski as he grinds away on the mat with the 'scissors firmly locked.  Killer Joe finds an ankle to pry away at & manages an ankle lock try.  Boot to the rump by Powers for the break.

SM:  "Look at the veteran Powers springing off the mat like a leopard!"

Right onto Joe's back, where he applies a sleeper!  Crowd roars, then groans as Nova gets a break by ramming Johnny back-first to the buckles!  But Johnny slaps it on again, dead center of the mat.  No escaping now!

SM:  "The old pro Powers perseveres, Milton.  Let THAT be a lesson for you young folk...Powers should make an interesting addition to the heavyweight contenders."

MA:  "Fans, we have more action to come after a word from our sponsors"/

COMMERCIAL 4

We return and there is further analysis of the Ottawa card.

SM:  "There are some tag matches, Milt, highlighted by the Von Steigers defending their belts agains David & Jerry Novak.  I'm wondering how many more kicks at the can the Novaks will get.  Someone else should be stepping up in that division".

MA:  "I had been thinking that Beautiful Bruce's merry pranksters were a possibility, but since the addition of Sheik Ali, that group seems to be in house-cleaning mode".

SM:  "Yes, I see Hussein gets to tune up for his TV title match by facing Johnny Powers in Ottawa but not one other member of Brucie's group is scheduled".

MA:  "Another match that should prove interesting is undefeated Mike Miller stepping up in class to face Sweet Daddy...that should have a bearing on the top contenders as well, seeing how "Killer" Joe Nova had a deflating loss.  In fact, I hope we can feature some more of the contenders on TV...those two, Jerry Valiant, who knows when we'll hear from the mad Masked Strangler again?"

SM:  "Norm Kimber is ready to introduce our final match...oh, speak of the devil, Mr. Valiant is heading our way!"

Match 5 - Robbie Stewart vs. Mr. Florida
Falls to TV time

MA:  "We were just alluding to the fact we have not seen you of late..."

JV:  "I'd suggest you weren't looking in the right places...slide over.  Of course, if you\re not wearing a padded bra or mini-skirt, the randy old goat you work with wouldn't notice!  I watch your "Spin the Barrel" spot every week to make sure I don't get selected for that gong show.  And I DO have a match here next week, seems there is some fresh cannon fodder...Rockhead Boulder, Eagle Feathers, a Japanese guy".

MA:  "You were pencilled in to face Black Diamond, Mr. Valiant, on next week's "Superstars of Wrestling"..."

JV:  "Another no-name.  And is this an open  try-out match going on in the ring?"

SM:  "The new young fellow, Robbie Stewart, hails from Scotland.  He is here as a Light-Heavyweight challenger.  He has some significant victories in England..."

In the ring, Stewart had made a cautious start but is picking up steam.

Jerry V. gives a snort.

JV:  "Well, you can't blame ME for not appearing more than I do.  Watson & the Tunneys are wasting time with the TV tournament thing, these flyweights, next will be the midgets!  I hope that if Kiniski gets past Markoff this weekend, he'll see me dismantle this Green Hornet or whoever it is!  Kiniski should get a reminder I'm still looking for him".

SM:  "We need to take a break, Mr. Valiant, thanks for coming by".

JV:  "Trying to rush me out, Menacker?  Need to make room for another of your centerfold pin-ups?"

COMMERCIAL 5

We return & have a clip of Stewart getting a pin after a Thesz press.

MA:  "Young Stewart takes the opening fall and they've just completed their rest period.  Sam, I thought you and Jerry Valiant usually get along well".

SM:  "Did you notice he was a bit cantankerous today, too, Milton?  Something must be on his mind, perhaps ther NWA Canadian Heavyweight belt".

MA:  "He was putting down quite a few people besides yourself, the TV title, the Light-Heavyweights...if he had stuck around, he SHOULD be impressed with the match going on here!"

Stewart has a body-scissors on the mat & the masked Floridian is straining towards the ropes.

SM:  "Hmmm, if Jerry Valiant faces Black Diamond next show, we won't get that mask versus mask match quite yet.  I guess Sheik Ali hasn't put our matchmakers under his thumb - yet".

After the rope-break, Stewart tries bouncing off the far-side ropes & flying in but Mr. FL got a back-elbow up.  He drops down for a pin on his stunned rival.

SM:  "This young new ref had poor positioning & did not see Mr. Florida was using his feet on the second rope for leverage, but the fall counts and we're knotted at a fall apiece".

During the rest period, Stewart has some clarification needed on that - masked guy is pleading saintly innocence.

MA:  "An interesting sidebar to what Jerry Valiant was saying earlier is that, at the big show on the 29th, our promoters WILL be featuring a midget tag match!  Oh, Stewart is not pleased with his masked foe's attitude!  We get the bell from Bronco Alcock & Stewart has TWO minutes to do something about it!"

BA:  "TWOOOOO minutes!  Two minutes, TV time remaining!"

Stewart gives chase & hits some flying mares - Florida heads to the floor with Robbie nipping at his heels.  Oh, young ref Danny Marsh IS a bit flustered, he runs out as well!  Stewart with a barrage of uppercut forearms, we're not getting any count-out, Marsh wants to break this up & show who's boss!  POW!

MA:  "That looked awfully deliberate to me, Sam!  Mc. Florida pulled the ref in front of a blow by Stewart!"

SM:  "I have to agree!  This fellow looks like he's 150 punds soaking wet and now has a FAT LIP...OH, he's compounding matters by DISQUALIFYING Stewart and waving the match off...oh well, we WERE just about out of time..."

Senior ref Wayne Cashman is out for a word with Marsh, he overrules him!  An arm-raise for Robbie, beefing from the man in the red/white/blue get-up, red cheeks for Marsh & Norm Kimber announcing time has expired with Stewart winning 2-1!

MA:  "A fair decision is rendered, and for Norm and Sam, goodbye for now!  For those celebrating, have a Happy Hanukkah".

RESULTS

  • Don Arakawa def/ Johnny War Eagle
  • Ron Ritchie def. El Matador LEVEL 2 ON THE GOLDEN LADDER!
  • "Rocky" Ed Boulder & Black Diamond def. THE Hangman & Armand Hussein w/ Beautiful Bruce via CO
  • Johnny Powers def. "Killer" Joe Nova w/ Killer Kowalski via submission
  • Robbie Stewart def. Mr. Florida 2-1 (TV time)

I'm straight with Boulder but Black Diamond is a white guy? Ritchie continues to impress and you have to be better with Powers around. I am digging the Sheik Ali attitude. Mean Mike Miller gives you a young studd to work with.

Great writing, as always, BG.

Not only is BLACK DIAMOND a white guy, he's a pasty Canadian white...with wrinkles, too!  It IS a legit hood gimmick one of the boys used.  Thought I'd throw the skin tone in now so folks wouldn't presume and ruin the reveal eventually.

No it's NOT Kiniski - I got plenty of wrinkled white guys!  lol

Great TV as usual!  The Soviets seemed determined...Loved the Valiant segment..Ritchie is still looking great...The Parliament line made me chuckle...I'm interested in seeing who the Black Diamond is...Love the Sheik Ali attitude as well...Ron Ritchie is going to be the star here if he keeps up his winning ways...Powers looked great...The Maple Leaf Gardens show is starting to take shape...Great work!
