AWA Windy City & Heartland 12/4 Briscos' Revenge!
Dec 12th, 2012, 1:57pm

Windy City Championship Wrestling taped 12 4 82 in Chicago for broadcast on WGN TV Channel 9 on Saturday 12 8 1982. Hosts: Roger Kent and Gene Okerlund.

The show starts with The Valiant Empire coming out and Johnny Valiant claiming he and his men have more gold than Fort Knox. With him is American Television Champion Larry Zbyszko, new USA Heavyweight Champion Ken Patera, and new AWA World Tag Team Champions, Adrian Adonis and Jesse Ventura.  Valiant has an unopened bottle of champagne saying they will all soon be celebrating.

The fans cheer as former AWA World Tag Team Champions Jack and Jerry Brisco with Jules Strongbow come out. Jerry is in his wrestling tights with a brace on his leg.  The Briscos are demanding a rematch for the belts here today on television.

Adonis says he would be happy to finish of Jerry Brisco today “and make him scream like a girl!” Jerry takes offense and moves towards Adrian but his held back by Jack and Jules.

VP of Operations, Buddy Rogers comes out and says he can okay a match with Adonis and Ventura for the belts, but says he cannot okay Jerry to wrestle. Jerry complains but Rogers offers a solution. Jack can team with Strongbow for the belts. Jerry, Jack and Jules immediately agree while there is disagreement in the Empire over the stipulation.

The Briscos and Strongbow walk off, as the Empire celebrates and Kent throws it to the ring.

MATCH 1 – KEN PATERA def MARVELOUS MARVIN TURNER in 6:21.

The new USA Heavyweight champion, Ken Patera comes over to Okerlund and is joined by Johnny Valiant. Gene shows a clip from the Night of Champions show at the UIC Pavilion.

VTR: Patera catches the champion in his swinging neckbreaker at around the 20 minute mark. While Backlund is going for a ride, Bunning is knocked from the ring onto the floor. Rogers goes to check on Bunning as Backlund, once on the mat, musters all of his strength to maneuver out of the hold. Backlund, in a quick moment, side suplexes Patera, sending both men hard to the canvas while Rogers reenters the ring.

 As both men slowly get up, Backlund captures Patera in a small package and gets a count of two from Rogers. Patera shifts his weight and has Backlund pinned. Rogers makes his count while, Bob’s shoulders are down…1...Patera holds on….2…Bob shifts his weight and the combatant’s legs start to separate…THREE! Both men break apart! Backlund and Patera both look confused while the ringside fans tell Rogers, Backlund kicked out. Rogers calls for the bell at 24:49, and hands the belt to PATERA!!!! Rogers raises the new champion’s hand as Valiant rushes in to celebrate. Backlund is stunned as Rogers tells him what happened.

Gene Okerlund tells Patera and Valiant it appears to be a controversial win. Patera tells Okerlund it doesn’t matter if it is controversial or not, “all that matters is I am champion.”

BREAK 1 ================000================

USA Tag Team Champions, The Jayhawks, Bobby Jaggers and Steve Williams, challenge the new AWA World Tag Team Champions to a title match. Jaggers says he has never seen Jack Brisco so angry and knows Adonis and Ventura will have hell to pay. Williams adds if the Briscos need some back up, they stand ready.

MATCH 2 – BOBBY JAGGERS & STEVE WILLIAMS def LARRY SHARPE & BILL WHITE in 6:07.

Greg Gagne joins Gene Okerlund and says things look bleak right now with The Dynasty holding much of the gold but he says he will change that. Gagne issues a challenge to TV Champion, Larry Zbyszko, Heartland Champion, Paul Ellering and USA Champion, Ken Patera.

BREAK 2 =====0000000000==================

Manny Fernandez comes out and he is hot about what happened in his match for the AWA World Title versus Wahoo McDaniel.  Roger Kent throws it to a VTR of what Manny is talking about.

Neither man was able to gain much of an advantage until beleaguered referee Jimmy Bunning was knocked down in a collision with Wahoo. Fernandez decided to take advantage of the situation and piledrive McDaniel to the mat. Bunning still on the mat not facing the action, as Manny taunted the fallen champion then went outside the ring to climb the turnbuckles. As Fernandez is running his mouth an man in Milwaukee Brewers Baseball cap and a cigar in his mouth made his way down to ringside. With the referee still down and Wahoo still on the mat, Fernandez made it to the top of the turnbuckles. As he was about to leap off, the man in the baseball cap, got up on the ring apron and pushed Fernandez off to the side. Manny landed groin first hard on the top rope, then fell into the ring. Wahoo, bleeding and on his knees crawled over to his injured opponent and made the cover as Bunning made a very weak three count at 19:24.

The man in the Brewers’ cap then grabbed the microphone as the crowd cheered and yelled, “How about dat!”

Manny yells: “That was Crusher interfering in my match!”

Kent responds: “Well the film is grainy.”

Manny: “Grainy!!!!????? How many people do you know would wear a Milwaukee Brewers cap in the middle of rabid Cubs and Whitesox land and get away with it? That old fool cost me the world title!”

Kent: “Well….”

Manny: “Well what, Kent? Let me tell you something. Wahoo I am not finished with you and I will be world champion because I am tougher and meaner than you. And as far as you are concerned Crusher, I will show the world AGAIN, that I am tougher than you!”

'
MATCH 3 – MANNY FERNANDEZ def FRANK MONTE in a tough match at 7:06.

Bob Backlund talks with Gene Okerlund and is joined by VP of Operations Buddy Rogers. Backlund says he doesn’t blame Rogers saying he believes Rogers did what he believed was the honest thing to do. Backlund says he will chase Patera down where ever he goes to regain the USA Title.

BREAK 3 =========00000==================

Roger Kent is still joined by Buddy Rogers as they are joined by American Television Champion Larry Zbyszko and his manager Johnny Valiant. Zbyszko and Valiant are demanding LeRoy Brown be banned for his actions at the Night of Champions.

Kent shows a VTR or what happened: Zbyszko wins by disqualification at 9:45 when Brown gets tired of Larry’s stalling and eventually ties him in the ring ropes. Leroy pounds the trapped Zbyszko bloody, ignoring the referee’s warnings and gets disqualified as a result.

Zbyszko and Valiant are ranting and raving when Leroy Brown comes out and Rogers immediately gets between them.  Brown says he has a tape from AWA President Verne Gagne that he thinks everyone needs to see.

Verne Gagne on tape from Minneapolis TV station KMSP with the AWA Logo in the background: “It’s great to be on television in the great AWA Midwest, er…I mean Heartland and Windy City Championship Wrestling.  There has been a load of controversy regarding Larry Zbyszko and Leroy Brown over the prestigious American Television Title. I feel it is in the best interest of the AWA as a whole to make a determination as to where we go from here. I feel in the effort to be fair, the AWA will allow the current champion, Larry Zbyszko, to choose what type of match he wants against Leroy. His options are a Lumberjack Match, a Strap Match, or a Cage Match. Mr. Brown has the option of what city he wants the match to take place, though I am pretty sure what city he will want to pick. And as for referee, I along with other members of the AWA will decide that. Thank you and look forward to see the wonderful fans at the matches soon!”

Larry Zbyszko is the first to mouth off, but obviously Valiant isn’t happy and Rogers looks a little miffed.
Zybszko: “I don’t like none of the options! “

Brown: “No one cares what you like, Boy! Choose now!”

Larry: “I am not intimidate by you Brown! I will choose when I am good and ready!”

Brown: “You better choose soon, Lar-ree! You know, I choose Chi-Town to be the place for the match!”

Rogers: “Now hold on, everybody. I had no knowledge of this tape or the AWA getting involved in something that should be handled here on the local level. Believe me, I will be looking into this.”

Brown: “Well Rogers, you look into whatever you want to. I have the word of the President of the AWA and I want my shot!”

With that Brown leaves for the ring.

MATCH 4 – LEROY BROWN def BILL WHITE in 8:32 in a brutal fight of a match.

Heartland Champion Precious Paul Ellering and his Doomsday team of Animal and Konga come out. Ellering says, “Greg Gagne can want all he wants but he is no match for the superior mind of the Precious One! I, the Heartland Heavyweight Champion, and leader of the greatest tag team known to mankind are here to dominate professional wrestling." He says Doomsday will beat Steve Williams and Bobby Jaggers for the USA Tag Team titles and then they will win the AWA World Tag Team Titles no matter who is holding the belts.

BREAK 4 ==============00000=================

Jack and Jerry Brisco along with Jules Strongbow come out. Jack says “It’s time to get down to business!” With that the three go to the ring as the crowd boos the arrival of the new AWA World Tag Team Champions Adrian Adonis and Jesse Ventura with their manager, Johnny Valiant.

For the AWA World Tag Team Titles:
MATCH 5 – ADRIAN ADONIS & JESSE VENTURA [C] w/ Johnny Valiant vs JACK BRISCO & JULES STRONGBOW w/Jerry Brisco.

This match is all Brisco and Strongbow from the start. The champs look a bit slow and off their game as Jack and Jules look like a well-oiled machine. Neither Adonis nor Ventura can provide much offense as the crowd is hyped at the thought of a title change.  After 8 minutes of action, Johnny Valiant hits Jules with his walking stick right infront of the referee. Jules wasn’t only momentarily hurt, if at all, by this but the referee disqualified Adonis and Ventura for the infraction at 8:32.

This doesn’t stop the action as Jerry grabs Valiant and attacks him while Jack goes after Adonis and Strongbow clears Ventura out of the ring. Ken Patera and Larry Zbyszko rush the ring but are soon met by Leroy Brown and Bob Backlund.

A ten man chaotic scene engulfs ringside as the heels and faces battle. Somehow, Jerry Brisco and Johnny Valiant end up in the ring. Jerry Valiant clamps on the figure four and holds it while Brown throws Zybszko from the ring. Brown then pounces on the locked legs of Valiant and Brisco.  A SNAP!!! is heard at ringside as Johnny Valiant cries out in pain.

Brown and Jack Brisco keep Zbyszko and the others from entering the ring as Jerry keeps the hold on Valiant as the show goes off the air.

END OF SHOW ========================000====================

American Heartland Wrestling Taped at WGN-TV studios in Chicago on 12-4-82 for syndicated broadcast across the Midwestern States and Manitoba Canada weekend of 12-8-82. Hosts Roger Kent and Ron Trongard.

VTR COLD OPEN TO SHOW: After 8 minutes of action, Johnny Valiant hits Jules with his walking stick right infront of the referee.

Brown and Jack Brisco keep Zbyszko and the others from entering the ring as Jerry keeps the hold on Valiant as the show goes off the air.

Roger Kent welcomes everyone to the show and says that action was in response to what happened at The Night of Champions December 2nd in Chicago.

VTR from Chicago Dec 2nd Night of Champions: At the 25minute mark, it was Ventura capturing Jerry in the figure four leglock. Valiant faked an entry into the ring, that distracted Jack. Adonis then climbed onto the second rope and did a splash onto the legs of Ventura and Jerry. Jack and the referee turned to see what had happened but Adonis was already out of the ring, and the younger Brisco was in a world of hurt. Brisco tried to attack Adonis but the referee, Jimmy Bunning, pulled him away. Once, Jack was out of the ring, Ventura yelled for Brisco to submit, but Jerry wouldn’t do it.

 Finally, Ventura released the hold and tagged in Adonis who grabbed the injured leg and turned Jerry over in a half crab. At 31:12, Jerry Brisco had more pain then he could bear and submitted under the pressure of Adonis’s half crab. Adonis immediately released the hold and the ring announcer made the announcement: “At 31 minutes and 12 seconds, Jerry Brisco submitted the referee, James Bunning has awarded the match to the NEW AWA WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS, ADRIAN ADONIS AND JESSE VENTURA. [/color
]

This brings out the AWA World Tag Team Champions Adrian Adonis and Jesse Ventura along with USA champion Ken Patera and American Television champion Larry Zbyszko. The four are angry over the events that have transpired and tell the Briscos and LeRoy Brown they want revenge.

Patera gloats that he now has a reason to break Backlund’s neck when they face off in their rematch. He says Backlund will never regain the USA Title and he will personally drive the former champion out of wrestling.

MATCH 1 – DOOMSDAY: ANIMAL & KONGA w/Paul Ellering defeat LARRY JONES & GENE LIGON in 3:25.

Heartland Heavyweight Champion Ellering says Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell are no match for Doomsday individually or separately. He says a new era of professional wrestling is upon us and Doomsday will usher in the apocalypse!

BREAK 1 =================0000==============

BREAK 2 ===00000000==================================

Gentleman Jimmy Holiday comes out and says if Williams and Jaggers want a challenge then they need to look no further than Tim Horner and Kevin Kelly. He says his tag team is the real future of wrestling and will show you why in the next match.

MATCH 3 === KEVIN KELLY & TIM HORNER def FRANK MONTE & GARY ROYAL in 5:39

Jules Strongbow comes out and says they were justified for what he, the Briscos, Leroy and Backlund did to The Valiant Empire. He says Adonis and Ventura broke his brother, Jay Strongbow’s leg and tried to break Jerry Brisco’s leg. Jules called it “an eye for an eye and a leg for a leg”!

BREAK 4 =======00000000000000000=====================

Great TV...Wow, talk about the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat!  His men are going to get revenge for Johnny V...It will be hard to pry the USA Title from Patera's clutches...Jaggers and Williams are good, but just because they lucked out against Adonis & Ventura once, it doesn't mean it will happen again...Manny and Crusher are going to go after each other even more brutally after what Crusher did...Still some brewing hostility between Rogers and Gagne, I wonder if we will ever see it come to a head....I still say Leroy has Larry's number...Poor Bill White came out on the short end of 2 matches on the same show...Great main event and with Jerry breaking Valiant's leg, it only intensifies the feud.

More great stuff from Heartland...I love the Doomsday group and with that protection, Ellering could have a long reign...I never was a Kevin Kelly fan, but I like what you are doing with him, Horner, and Holiday...Greg Gagne really wants to be a singles Champion again...Never underestimate Adnan...Beating down Brown was a bad move for the Empire.

Great job Carl!  Heartland is always a must read and just draws me in every time.

Snap, Crackle, and Pop! Valiant gets what he deserves. I can't wait for Larry Z to get what he deserves from Brown. I love what you have done with the tag teams here, especially Doomsday and the Jayhawks. Great deal from Brisco and Strongbow. Gagne and Rogers and that undercurrent is compelling.

Great stuff, as always, bud.
