Thursday December 20, 1982 Bell 7:15pm To determine the number one contender to Magnum Terry Allen’s United States Heavyweight Title, former champion
Harley Race took on Hulk Hogan with James J. Dillon. Hogan used his strength in the early going to wear Race down. Harley’s stamina and ability to absorb punishment served him well as he would later mount a comeback, turning the match into a brawl.
Around 12 minutes into the match, Harley had busted Hogan open with repeated punches to the forehead. Dillon became enraged and argued to referee Tommy Young, that Race was using a closed fist. Young warned Race, but Race gave the referee a “don’t bother me again” stare and nothing more was said.
Dillon decided to take matters into his own hands and while the referee was distracted by Hogan, he punched Race in the face several times buckle first with his rolled up belt. Hogan then stomped Race out of the ring and busted him open when he rammed him head first into the ring post.
The referee started to count, but both men fought their way back into the ring. The fighting continued until Harley dropped Hogan with a head butt. Dillon tried to enter the ring and Race turned his attention to the manager.
Harley had Dillon on the ring apron as Young tried to physically break them up. Hogan in the meantime, staggered back to his feet.
Race was trying to pull Dillon into the ring, Dillon was holding on to the ropes for dear life and Tommy Young was trying to separate them as Hogan started to walk over to them and the crowd roared and cheered.
WHACK!!!!!!!!!!!! From out of nowhere, Paul Jones came down to ringside with a chair, sneaking up behind Hogan and laid him out with a chair. Everyone in the arena, but Young, could hear the smash. Jones scooted out of the ring and discarded the dented chair. Race turned around and saw Hogan laying on the mat. He then covered him and called to Young to make the pin. Dillon protested but by the time he got in the ring, Young had counted three giving the match to Race at 26:01. Race got to his feet and threw Dillon out of the ring as the crowd cheered.
