GCW: Christmas Night '82-TV Title Tourney
Dec 25th, 2012, 7:43pm

The Omni
Christmas Night December 25, 1982 6 PM
Referees: Nick Patrick, Tommy Weathers, Scrappy McGowan

The Georgia Tech cheerleaders pass out goody bags to all kids under 12. Little
Richard sings the National Anthem.

National Television Title
First Round-Lou Thesz bracket
*Randy Rose defeats Steve Olsonoski with a chain to the head off a suplex
attempt @ 7:50. (P)
*Ted Oates defeats Kurt Von Hess after Von Hess w/Sir Oliver Humperdink misses a
knee from the top rope and Oates counters with a gut buster @ 6:38 (W)
*Randy Rose defeats Superstar Graham with help from Ron Bass and Rip Rogers.
Rogers distracts McGowan and Bass comes out and runs Graham into the ring post.
Graham is counted out @ 8:00. (M)

First Round-Pat O'Connor bracket
*Sweet Brown Sugar defeats Karl Von Shotz w/Sir Oliver Humperdink after Brown
Sugar hits a flying bulldog off the top rope @ 8:00. (P)
*Norvell Austin defeats Wendell Cooley with a flying forearm after ringsiders
see Austin load his elbow pad. The pin comes @ 7:03. (W)
* Ron Bass w/Sir Oliver Humperdink and Sweet Brown Sugar wrestle to a 10-minute
draw. George Scott comes in and flips a coin. Sugar gets to call and says
"heads". He gets the call and moves on. Bass tries for retribution but is
stopped by Superstar Graham. Bass bails and Graham says he can't wait for
tomorrow night in Marietta. (M)

*****INTERMISSION******

Semifinals-Thesz bracket
Randy Rose defeats Ted Oates after Rose spears Oates through the ropes to the
floor. Oates hits his head and climbs woozily onto the apron. Rose suplexes him
back in and turns the move into a brainbuster. ME, INC. is in the TV Title
finals. Rose gets the victory @ 11:35. (P)

Semifinals-O'Connor bracket
Sweet Brown Sugar defeats Norvell Austin after both men are bloodied by Austin's
object. Sugar, Austin, and Weathers are caught in a corner splash. Austin
recovers first and he charges with an elbow. Sugar ducks and Austin slams hard
into the corner. Sugar gets the metal and loads his mask. One flying head butt
later and Sugar is in the finals @ 12:03. (W)

Rose and Rogers come out to protest but Sugar hightails it too quickly.

AWA World Junior Heavyweight Title
Tiger Mask (c) vs. Rip Rogers
Rogers remains out with Rose for this one. Mask complains and the referee is
presented with a paper from Rose. It says that any member of ME, INC can be at
ringside when another member is wrestling. Rose is allowed to stay. Rogers gets
in Mask's face and says some horid Japanese vulgarity. Mask grabs Rogers but is
clipped in the knee by Rose. Weathers backs Rose to the floor but can't really
do much since the match hasn't started.

Rogers works over the knee with various holds, like full crabs, half crabs,
Indian death locks, and spinning toe holds. Mask escapes each attempt but his
aireal attack is almost useless. Almost. In what seems like madness, he makes a
dive through the ropes at Rogers while Rip is on the floor. Rogers' back is
driven hard into the ring railing. Mask rams The Hustler's head into the ring
steps. Rogers is nearly counted out but his head is a crimson mask.

Mask shows he is a wrestling master from this point on. He becomes a mat
technician and stretches the back. Nerve holds holds make the blood spew. A
camel clutch has Rogers spent by the time he reaches the ropes. Rogers looks out
and Weathers is about to ring the bell when Mask stops him. It takes a lot of
effort but the masked champion climbs the turnbuckles and hits a flying splash
on the prone challengers. McGowan makes the count this time @ 18:03.

******INTERMISSION******

Finals-National Television Title Tournament
Sweet Brown Sugar vs. Randy Rose w/Norvell Austin
This one takes place all over the Omni. Nick Patrick looks the other way for
quite a lot of the infractions. This match will end decisively. everybody hopes.
No such luck. Rose loads the chain and takes a swing at Sugar. Sweets sees it
coming and dropkicks Rose out, Wendell Cooley comes down and gets the chain from
Rose. He hands it to Weathers. While this is going on Austin hits Sugar in the
face with an adult beverage. Sugar's eyes are burning, Rose sees it and takes
advantage. He bulldogs Sugar and gets the title winning cover @ 16:03.

Rose, Austin, and Rogers celebrate in the ring. Cooley helps Sugar to the back.

AWA World Tag Team Championship
Adrian Adonis/Jesse Ventura vs. Jack/Jerry Brisco.
The newly crowned National Tag Champs, The Briscos, go against the AWA champs
here. Ventura makes one of the few mistakes of the contest when he clocks Adonis
with a punch. Jack and Jerry hurt the leg of Adonis, negating Good Night Irene
and setting up the figure four. In fact, Adonis does apply the sleeper on Jerry
later. He can't cinch down because of the knee. Jerry is able to roll Adonis
over the top rope to the floor. Jesse runs across the ring and clobbers Jack.
The temper of the Blackwell, Oklahoma native flares up. Weathers breaks them up.
Adonis is able to get in a blatant low blow and hits a side suplex on Jerry. The
younger Brisco tries to get in but is just too woozy. He falls back off the
apron and hits his head on the railing. A COUNTOUT gives the champs the win @
26:12.

Ventura and Adonis leave. A large cut has been opened in the back of Jerry
Brisco's head. You have to wonder how this will effect the Anderson match
Thursday night in Marietta.

Happy Holidays from The Omni in Atlanta.

I liked the main event tag team match. This sets up the Anderson match very well. The tournament was vwery good, some great early 80's Southern names involved.

Good tournament.  Look forward to seeing how the ME take turns defending the belt.  Lot of possibilities there.

Great Christmas card!  I was really hoping Sugar would win, but it's going to be interesting watch the MX all defending the Title.  Tiger mask/Rogers would have been good...Ventura/Adonis got lucky, I hope Jerry recovers enough to face the Andersons...Great stuff Johnny!

Never argue with an idiot. They bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience!
