Southwest TV 12-29-82  New TV Champ
Dec 28th, 2012, 10:35pm

Southwest Championship Wrestling TV
Taped on Wednesday Dec. 26, 1982
at The Junction in San Antonio TX
Broadcast on Saturday Dec. 29, 1982
on the USA Network
Sanctioned by the AWA
2hr. show (last one)

The usual opening title sequence played, and then cut away to join a match already in progress.....

Match:  Johnny Mantell def. El Halicon with a tombstone piledriver at 10:00 (3:30 shown on tv)

Steve Stack then welcomed everyone into the program today, and said he hoped that everyone had a wonderful Christmas.  It was a wild night on Christmas at the HemisFair Arena, and we'll talk more about that later.  Some very big news coming out of that event.  Today's main event will be the match for the Southwest Television Title, and it will be between "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff and Tiger Conway Jr, as they were the last two men left in the battle royal on Christmas night.

Stack then started introducing the next match on the show, saying "let's take a look at the new Southwest Tag Team Champions, The Fantastics!

Match:  The Fantastics def. Jerry Grey and "Outlaw" Butch Beckler in a non-title match.

Commercials

Steve Stack welcomed in, begrudgingly, Tully Blanchard.  Stack started relaying the story of Tully's actions on Christmas night, telling the fans that he turned on his partner Jose Lothario, and then later in the night, cost Blackjack Mulligan the Southwest Heavyweight Title.  Tully let out a small smile, as the news sunk into the fans and they began booing.

Tully said that everything that Steve Stack just said is true.  He was frustrated with the whole tag team tournament situation, and the fact that his partner Jose Lothario didn't make the tag when he could have just goes to show that Jose is as selfish as Mulligan.  The fans started booing.  Tully said you fans can boo me all you want, but you know I'm right.  And yes, he did cost Mulligan his Southwest title, and it's because he is a selfish man too.  He decided his Southwest title was more important than their friendship, and gave up the Southwest Tag Team belts, so he just returned the favor.  He said that he knows that Blackjack will be looking for revenge, and that's fine with him, because as far as he's concerned, this ain't done yet by a longshot.  Tully finished with saying that he thinks it's time to find some new friends, as all of his have now turned their back on him since Christmas night.  He gave a warning to all his former friends that if they cross him, he'll put them down...hard.  Tully then left to a round of boos as Steve Stack introduced the next match.....

Match:  Al Perez pinned Pat Rose with a backslide.

Commercials

Steve Stack was joined by the new Southwest Tag Team Champions, The Fantastics.  Bobby and Tommy said that because the fans were behind them, they wrestled their way through the tournament and came out on top.  Now that they have the belts, they are going to be fighting champions, and champions the fans can be proud of, not like the Fabulous Blondes were.  They shook Stack's hand, and then he introduced the next match.....

Match:  Manny Fernandez def. Tony Zane with a flying double chop coming off the ropes.

Fernandez then joined Stack and talked about how good it is to be back in the Southwest, and let the Spoiler know that he has his number, and last week signed open contracts that he had for the new year!  He said now that Spoiler is the Southwest Champion, he really looks forward to those matches.  He told Spoiler to enjoy that belt while he has it, 'cause when he meets this raging bull in the ring, he's going to take it!  The crowd applauded their approval at that as Stack sent the show to commercial.

Back from the break, and Steve Stack said that we're about to see a new wrestler in town.....Killer Brooks.

Match:  Killer Brooks def. Dennis Gauthier with a reverse neck breaker.  Brooks set himself up on the rule breaker side of things in this match, and he bent most rules, and broke several others.

Steve Stack was joined by the new Southwest Heavyweight Champion, The Spoiler.  He said that he promised Mulligan he would take his belt, and thats exactly what he did on Christmas night.  He said that Mulligan has return matches this week, but the story won't change.  He'll still be the champion when it's over, and then he'll show Manny Fernandez who runs things around here, not some johnny come lately like him.

Commercials

Match:  The Fabulous Blondes def. Ted Petty and RT Tyler when they nailed Petty with a rocket launcher from the top rope>

They joined Steve Stack after the match.  They said that the Fantastics are walking around with the Southwest belts on borrowed time.  They are going to get those belts back any day now, and leave the Fantastics in the dirt.  Get ready boys, because the Fabulous Blondes are coming for you.

Out of the break, and Steve Stack played the tape where Orndorff was eliminated from the battle royal by Tito Santana, but snuck back in the ring to eliminate TIto and get into the TV Title Match.

Paul Orndorff came out and said that something must be wrong with Steve Stacks eyes, because Tito Santana never eliminated him.  He said that he's about to go to the ring and beat up Tiger Conway and claim the TV title.  He then headed to the ring for the main event.

Before the match, Joe Blanchard brought the TV belt out.  He then ran down the specifics about the belt.  Each week, the TV title will be defended here on tv in matches with a 10 minute time limit.  The title will not be defended anywhere but right here on tv, and the fans can look forward to an exciting title match here every week.

Match:  "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff def. Tiger Conway Jr. w/ Thunderbolt Patterson to claim the tv title.  Conway put up a heck of a fight in an exciting match, but Orndorff finished him off with a piledriver for the pin.

Afterwards, Joe Blanchard awarded Orndorff the belt.

Steve Stack wrapped up the show.  He said that since the end of the year is here, so is the 2 hour episodes of Southwest Wrestling.  We will be resuming our regular 1 hour programs next week.

So long everybody!

I was pulling for Cpnway here. Congrats to Orndorff. Fantastic promo from Tully. I can just hear those words from him. Fernandez was big in real life SWCW and it will be interesting to follow him here. Nice win by Perez. Always enjoy The Fantastics.
