Graphic announces

Maple Leaf Wrestling presents
"SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING"
All matches sanctioned by the National Wrestling Alliance - Vincent McMahon, President

Taped at the Hamilton Forum, Tuesday January 1st.  Syndicated broadcast on regional channels.

We open at the announce desk with Milt Avruskin & Sam Menacker.

MA:  "Happy New Year and welcome to "Superstars of Wrestling".  Sam, the HOLIDAY SPECIAL card at Maple Leaf Gardens was, indeed, special and provides us with PLENTY to talk about".

SM:  "Yes it does!  Congratulations to two brand new champions - Denny Brown is the NWA Canadian Light-Heavyweight champion, and in a bit of a headline, Joyce Grable and NOT The Fabulous Moolah is the first-ever NWA Canadian Women's champ.  GENE KINISKI finishes the year with a win over The Sheik, in a match that leaves the future of Beautiful Bruce in jeopardy - we DO wish Bruce a speedy recovery".

MA:  "As we turn the corner entering 1983 our Main Event today WILL see someone left at the curb - don't forget the stipulation as Ron Ritchie faces Jerry Brown & it is LOSER LEAVES TOWN!"

SM:  "And it is confirmed that, although this IS Ritchie's GOLDEN LADDER payoff, he is indeed, putting his Maple Leaf future on the line!"

We go to Norm Kimber in mid-ring.

Match 1 - "Mean" Mike Miller vs. Dave Kochen
One fall 10 minutes

MA:  "As you can tell, fsns , we are NOT in the studio, we are doing a special taping from the Hamilton Forum".

SM:  "And as the clairvoyants and psychics have made their usual poppycock prognostications, let me make one that I think is a sure thing - this young fellow in the ring, the STILL-UNDEFEATED Mike Miller, is destined for great things - and soon!"

Miller is swatting Kochen around rather efficiently & effortlessly.  He pauses to lean over the ropes.

MA:  "A good prediction, I'd say, Carnac!  I do believe we have two MORE thinking along with you".

Killer Kowalski & Rip Hawk are out and, if they are scouting journeyman Kochen, I'll eat my hat!  Miller may have made some comments, but returns his attention to Mr. Kochen - by way of a Full-Nelson submission.

Norm gets a word from the victor.

NK:  "Mike Miller, your very impressive winning streak IS intact!"

MMM:  "Yeah, thanks - UNFORTUNATELY, some people are taking notice!  I mean people I don't really care about - like YOU, pretty boy, yeah, YOU - Rip Hawk!"

Rip faces Miller, all smiles.

MMM:  "What are you smiling for, Hawk?  I JUST SAID "people I don't care about" - YOU fit THE PROFILE!"

Smile vanishes.

MMM:  "See, the LEECHES are swarmin' around, figurin' I'll join up with them.  And Hawk's shown what a back-stabbin' sonuvagun he is!  He set Jerry Brown up - hey, Rip, what if Brown BEATS Ritchie today - just sayin'...you'll lokk even stupider than normal!"

Rip activates his SNIT and leaves in it.

MMM:  "Beautiful Bruce, 'fore he got the ole barbecue thing goin', was THE SAME, sayin' Sheik Ali would shower me with money!  Come on in, Killer..."

Kowalski had been biding his time on the floor.

MMM:  "KOWALSKI here said the MAGIC WORDS!  Canadian Heavyweight Title!  We'll be shooting to get big Gene Kiniski in the ring, whether he wants to, or not!"

MA:  "Killer Kowalski has a resolution for 1983 - help Mike Miller get the title!  We'll be right back!"

COMMERCIAL 1 - "Have you ever been to sea, Billy?" - this week's episode of "Superstars of Wrestling" sponsored in part by High Liner Fish Sticks

We return with a VTR

Joyce Grable, inaugural NWA Canadian Women's champ!

JG:  "I am delighted to hold this belt, and thanks for all the support in Toronto.  I am SO glad I was the better wrestler than Moolah that night!  See, the World champ has, for years, had a stranglehold, a death-grip on the top spot.  And I can think of a lot better lady wrestlers than her.  But the Fabulous Moolah, and her clique have SCHEMED, by hook or by crook, to keep the other girls down...she even has that nasty Mae Young at her side - SHE'S got A HAND in things, too".

But, I am SO PLEASED, I've met with the promoters, and this CANADIAN belt is going to attract the very TOP challengers.  I'll work a tough schedule and take on ALL comers!  On January 19th, there is a big card planned in Windsor and the belt that is my honor & privilege to wear, will be on the line!"

END VTR

Match 2 "Killer" Joe Nova w/ Killer Kowalski vs. The Alaskan
One fall 10 minutes

SM:  "Well, Killer Kowalski has done the IN WITH THE NEW, now he has big Joe Nova in action & Joe may be glad there was no OUT with the OLD!"

MA:  "The Alaskan, Jay York makes his TV debut here, he did well in the Boxing Day battle royal in Cayuga, won by Moose Morowski - he is a capable veteran".

And Kowalski is very intense, advising Nova...a punch to The Alaskan's ribs from the apron from the manager!

SM:  "I hear The Alaskan really put the hurt on THE BOUNTY HUNTERS, who have gone looking for greener pastures...York & Nova are dead-even here, Milton".

York gets his head rammed to the buckles - Danny Marsh takes big Joe aside to discuss the use of hair-pulling, while Kowalski slaps THE CLAW on Jay!  Everybody in the Forum sees it...save Marsh.  A big belly-to-back on the new guy with the fresh welts on his head ends it.

MA:  "What HAD been a competitive match has a most dubious ending...we need to go to break fans, but when "Superstarts of Wrestling" returns, we'll hear from our OTHER newly-crowned champ.

COMMERCIAL 2 - In theaters now - Trail of the Pink Panther

"Downtown" Denny Brown with the newly-won belt is at ringside with Norm.

NK:  "Denny, you have developed a LOT of support as you worked towards this great title!"

DB:  "I feel real fortunate, I came here without a lot of expectations, just wanted an opportunity.  Well, I KNOW I've gotten better while working here and getting this title with competition like Zumhofe & Arakawa means a LOT".

NK:  "And in beautiful Windsor on the 19th, you raise the stakes...taking on Chavo Guerrero, the WORLD champ!"

DB:  "That's the part where I have to pinch myself - the break of a lifetime, Norm".

To the desk.

SM:  "Good luck to Downtown Brown!  There were some pretty interesting tag matches at the HOLIDAY SPECIAL, Milt".

MA:  "Rip Hawk's new combo of Vic Rossitani & Buddy Roberts got a draw with Ron Ritchie & Ed Boulder.  Much more definitive was THE SOVIETS falling to The Mighty Igor and this young prospect - THE GREAT WOJO!"

Wojo is in the ring as we got the crabby Comrades approaching.  Chris Markoff shoves Kortsia towards the ring as he grabs Sammy's mic.

CM:  "We see what is being schemed - Kiniski brought IGOR here as a paid HIT MAN!  Well, Wojo has no Igor to hold his hand NOW!  And Kiniski has one less GORILLA to get in MY WAY as I get that belt!"

Match 3 Kortsia Korchenko vs. The Great Wojo
One fall ten minutes

MA:  "Were you DONE there, Markoff?  Sam would like his microphone".

As Chris seems to have more to yammer about, Sam checks his coffee mug...wanders off for a refill!

CM:  "Who needs Menacker?  I TELL what happens here, Korchenko is under orders - do whatever means are necessary!  Fewer sidekicks for COWARD Kiniski!  Wojo has NO chance!"

MA:  "Well, Korchenko has had some rather unimpressive showings lately...."

Wojo is finding equal success hammerlocking either arm.  Markoff narrows his gaze.

CM:  "What YOU know about wrestling fits on pin head, pin-head!  Korchenko has NEW orders from SUPREME SOVIET, he knows to make better job... ***CLUNK***..."

After dumping the mic, Comrade Markoff heads to ringside.  From the apron, he grabs Wojo's noggin.  Sam settles in with a steaming mug.

SM:  "I didn't think I'd have long to wait with Markoff.  Have you let the fans know Moose Morowski is out as well?"

Picture = 1000 words.  Markoff scoopslammed by the Moose on the floor.  Korchenko gets face wrapped around turnbuckle.  Wild swing by Markoff.  Belly-to-back on KK.  Moose may have separated Markoff's shoulder on post.  Kortsia's shoulders are where they should be, pinned flat on the mat.

SM:  "Team Polski pitching a shutout with the Russki's!"

COMMERCIAL 3

We have a match joined in progress.

Match 4 Robbie Stewart vs. Nick DeCarlo
One fall 10 minutes

MA:  "Our fans with Polish roots have had a lot to celebrate, Sammy, but home-towner Nick DeCarlo's appearance has our Italian fans very happy...he may prove to be more popular than, say, Vic Rossitani".

SM:  "A solid veteran with a good resume is Nick - I've been impressed how he has not been flustered by the Flying Scot's aerial attack".

A very entertaining match of contrasting styles.  We hear "NINE MINUTES HAVE ELAPSED...NINE minutes".

MA:  "Upcoming LIVE Maple Leaf wrestling is fun for the whole family!  Saturday  Jan. 5 we are in Kitchener, in Lindsay on the 10th, Niagara Falls on the 11th and next Saturday in London".

In the ring...a time-limit draw with both combatants showing appreciation for a good, clean match.

Milt forces a smile...

MA:  "A fine match to start the New Year for those two.  I DO have something from someone ELSE, who seems to be turning over a new leaf in 1983".

We have a taped interview.

Milt Avruskin at the podium in the interview area.

MA:  "I had been asked to make some time available for Sweet Daddy Siki, who inferred he had some things...OH!  Oh, here he is now!"

FULL BLOWN Sweet Daddy!  The wholllle nine yards - sequined jacket, white glove, feather boa, hand mirror, outlandish sunglasses...and the hair is an eye-jarring blonde.

SDS:  "You know darn well whut yer lookin' at - the FLAMBOYANT STYLE, THE AMAZING CHARM an' PERSONALITY ~  The STUPENDOUSLY one an' ONLY, "Mr. Irresistible", chillun!"

MA:  "Gosh, it IS the old Sweet Daddy - you HAD been playing things - until now - pretty low-key..."

SDS:  "Low-key, schmo-key, hokey-pokey!  The bosses say be a good boy, cut OUT all the FUN stuff...Well, I dun whut they ast an' what wuz my reward?  My payback, my TIT FOR TAT?  NUFFIN', sweet FANNY ANNIE.  Any big new guy come in, it's "go gettim, Daddy", DON'T let them git after Kiniski or Ritchie oh NO, please, Daddy!  I'se DONE, enuff a' bein' a CHUMP!"

MA:  "Good heavens, you are saying a mouthful!"

SDS:  "Dang straight, bub..."

He passes the hand mirror to Milt after an admiring gaze, adjusts a bobby pin in his hair & pulls out a huge cigar!

SDS:  "Y'all LIKE whut ya see!  Well, in Windsor, they ast the OLD Sweet Daddy ta give the NEW young hot shot WOJO THE GREAT a work-out, but UH UH UH!  They dun try ta STIFLE my charm, to DESTROY my reputation, to CHANGE my wholllle PERSONALITY.  You MESS with a man's IDENTITY, bub, you might NOT LIKE whut ya bargained for..."

He takes off the rhinestone shades...and SNAPS them in two!

END VTR

SM:  "The old fable about the leopard changing his spots, the old dog learning new tricks..."

MA:  "Indeed, and after the break, our MAIN EVENT where one Jerry Brown might be looking at a change in his surroundings in 1983".

COMMERCIAL 4

We have yet MORE chat!  This time, a tape of Sammy Menacker, joined by Jerry Valiant

JV:  "Menacker, I wanted to speak with YOU - you weren't that good of a wrestler back in the OLD DAYS, but you've seen a lot!"

SM:  "I'll take that as a compliment, I suppose, Mr. Valiant.  Or should I still refer to you as the maniac, unstable MASKED STRANGLER?"

JV:  "Ha ha...funnnn-ny!  THAT is what I want to discuss.  JOHNNY POWERS got a win at the HOLIDAY SPECIAL, and with a swarm of goons, unmasked me as The Strasngler.  Powers is SOME big shot, needed six, SEVEN guys to help him!  Well, Powers, before your fat head swells up any more, chew on THIS.  In Windsor, I'll face you one on one, with no mask.  If I don't get my revenge, I'll pack my bags and head somewhere I AM appreciated!"

END VTR

SM:  "You were at that match, Milton - how many DID help Johnny Powers?"

MA:  "Johnny got the clean win on his own - Ron Ritchie & Ed Boulder helped prevent Valiant from escaping without taking his medicine.  And those two had ample reason to see the unmasking".

Match 5 Ron Ritchie vs. Jerry Brown
One fall 15 minutes

The opponents are getting instructions from Wayne Cashman.

Milt thinking along the same lines.

MA:  "Fans, this is NOT a TV title match, it is Ron's payoff for climbing the GOLDEN LADDER.  IF Ron wins, he defends his belt next week against Mike Sharpe.  For Brown, he MUST get a clear victory...or he is out of Maple Leaf Wrestling for good...Ritchie DOES have the advantage if there is a DQ or count-out decision, but we would not expect the champ to go that route".

SM:  "And last week, Jerry Brown got the bum's rush by the big bum, Rip Hawk, so he is on his OWN".

Away we go & JB does look motivated - he has a reverse headlock and likely adding some choking.  Yes, it is spotted & on the break, Brown fires some chops...Ron staggered to the floor.

MA:  "Fans, we need to take one last break!"

COMMERCIAL 5

MA:  "While we were away, Brown & Ritchie have both been out of the ring".

With a handful of trunks, Brown tosses Ron out again.

SM:  "Oh, good grief..."

Iron Mike Sharpe out to scout!  Out to get involved?  No, out to bellow at Ritchie that SHARPE is Canada's greatest atha-lete.  Ritchie rolls in - Brown's boot to the rib is preferable to Sharpe's ear-splitting bombast.

SM:  "Sharpe is getting on the nerves of well, everybody!  And I know Norm wanted to ask Sharpe about that leather brace on his forearm..."

Ritchie has Brown's legs neutralized in a spinning toe-hold.  Is this an OPEN HOUSE?

MA:  "Sam, THIS character made a mysterious appearance at the HOLIDAY SPECIAL..."

SM:  "Did I miss something on the news?  Has rhere been a prison escape?"

Yes, the man in the striped mask, cap & prison get-up...and no stripes on the chair he breaks over Sharpe's back!

MA:  "I am truly confused...now this...well, fugitive, I guess is on the apron.  Oh, the fellows with the stripes running vertical are talking him downnnnn...oh NO, not here!"

Let's meet the new guy...Ron has a nice body-scissors rest hold going.

Sam takes the initiative.

SM:  "WHAT IN BLUE BLAZES IS THIS & WHO THE DICKENS ARE YOU?"

Gravelly voice..."I'm THE CONVICT, escaped from an Alabama Chain Gang!  If that sounds like it means I'm TOUGH...heheheh..."

Back-up refs Yorkston & Marsh haul him off.  Ritchie has gained the unsurmountable advantage - A SLEEPER!  And that arm is giving NO resistance as it is dropped a third time.

Mike Sharpe has shaken the cobwebs, sees Ron will hold the belt next, and unleashes another blast of braggadocio.

MA:  "OUT goes Jerry Brown - literally, figuratively, any which way you slice it!  But...WHO wants a CONVICT to ring in the New Year?"

RESULTS

  • Mike Miller defeats Dave Kochen
  • Killer Joe Nova defeats "The Alaskan" Jay York
  • The Great Wojo defeats Kortsia Korchenko
  • Nick DeCarlo vs. Robbie Stewart ends in a time-limit draw
  • Ron Ritchie submits Jerry Brown

Enjoying the push of Miller. Liked how he got under the skin of Hawk. Wojo is a jewel of a find for Toronto. Nice promos from Grable and Brown. Great win by Ritchie. he is what fantasy wrestling is all about.

Great stuff, BG.
