“Georgia Championship Wrestling”
A Proud Member of the NWA
Hosted by: Jim Ross and Freddie Miller
Taped: January 5, 1983 @ WTBS Studios
Broadcast: January 5, 1983 on WTBS @ 6:05-8:05

Your referee for today is Nick Patrick.

Jim Ross and Freddie Miller welcome the fans to the show. They both say that big things are in store for Georgia Championship Wrestling in 1983. Miller says it is time to hit the ground running, right now. Ross welcomes out Columbus promoter Fred Ward.

Ward thanks the announcers and the fans for this time on today’s program. First off, Ward says that George Scott is well on the way to recovery after being brutalized by Roddy Piper. Ward says it will be some time before he can assume any type of duties pertaining to professional wrestling, though. The promoters of GCW have gotten together.  A new chairman had been appointed and will be announced in just a few moments.

However, the events and decisions that led to Scott’s injuries have to be addressed. Ward says that he and the other promoters heard the apologies that were extended last week. They accept those apologies. Still, the promoters have to make sure that nothing like that is ever faced again. To do so, the new mantra of Georgia Championship Wrestling will be: what was old is new again. Ward says that, from this moment on:

GCW HAS RE-JOINED THE NATIONAL WRESTLING ALLIANCE.

The fans at the WTBS studios applaud this announcement. Miller and Ross clap, as well. Ward says that the promoters in Georgia decided that a man who casts a mighty shadow was needed to carry us forward as part of the NWA. Calls were made and the new Chairman of Georgia Championship Wrestling is: TEX MCKENZIE.

The Pride of the Alamo comes out and shakes hands with some of the fans. Tex says he has some big shoes to fill in taking over for George Scott. Still, he is ready to jump into the fray with both of his rather large feet. He turns to Ross and proclaims: “Jimbo, let’s get to some wrestling.” Ross says they will do just that after these commercial messages.

******COMMERCIALS******

Mike Rotundo/Jim Duggan defeat Steven Casey/Don Serrano after Rotundo brainbusts Serrano @ 5:02. Duggan spears Casey to block off any save.

Ross talks to the winners at the desk. He asks why both men have decided to come into GCW with “poor sportsmanship” when their reputations said they had other priorities. Rotundo says that they were tired of bumping their heads on a glass ceiling and decided being “more aggressive” would get them farther. Duggan says that, when he was an Atlanta Falcon, he saw coaches come and go. But, “winners” stayed around. Duggan says that he and Mike will stay winners “by any means necessary”.

A clip from a match in Griffin, Georgia shows Rotundo brainbusting Ted Oates on the floor. An excited Rotundo says that’s what he stands for, now. Being the man who sends guys right “outta here”. The hissing starts again, just like last week. Duggan says that sound means The Viper’s Nest has arrived but the nest isn’t full, yet.

Miller says a real man, who is already a legend in this sport, returns to WTBS next.

******COMMERCIALS******

Dory Funk, Jr. defeats Thunderfoot Prime with a spinning toe hold @ 6:29.

Miller talks to the second generation wrestler in the ring. Funk says he thanks the fans for the warm welcome but he just heard something out here that he wants to address. He says that he has a soft spot in his heart for brother teams like The Oates boys. But, knowing Ted Oates personally, he knows that hard work and the right attitude led to whatever those two fellas achieved. They gave no quarter and expected none. They stood for winning first and hurting guys second.

Funk says that deciding to hurt guys first isn’t the best way to go. He knows what it does because he and brother Terry have done it a lot. It gets guys in both locker rooms upset. He says that Jim Duggan and Mike Rotundo should have beaten The Oates Brothers clean and built on that. Rotundo “standing up like that” got one guy in his locker room upset. He says, if Rotundo wants to change his rep, he should try beating a Funk. Be aware, though, he knows lots of ways to hurt somebody “first”.

Ross says that Dick Slater wrestles next.

******COMMERCIALS******

Dick Slater defeats Tom Lintz with an abdominal stretch @ 6:34.

Slater talks with Ross at the desk. He says that he wished he could have hurt Roddy Piper a whole lot more before they got rid of him. Still, he has no regrets and is looking forward to facing new challengers for his Georgia Heavyweight Title belt. At that point, one of the TV staffers brings out a large box that is addressed to Slater.

Both men look confused but Slater decides to open the package, anyway. Bad decision. Inside the package is a bullrope. As soon as Slater takes it out,  he is blindsided by Sir Oliver Humperdink and a big, blond wrestler. Ross identifies him as Bobby Duncum. Humperdink cheers on his new man, who carves up Slater with the cowbell on the bull rope. After the attack is done, Humperdink throws the box toward Slater, saying the new challenger has been delivered.

Ross and Miller both call for a commercial to regroup. Slater is helped off by some prelim wrestlers.

*******COMMERCIALS******

Paul Orndorff comes out to wrestle. He stops at the desk and says he doesn’t want to wrestle Flying Phil Watson today, although he has some grudges with Phil’s dad, Whipper  Watson. What Orndorff does want to do is become better than “The Total Package” right here today. He wants to become “The Total Legend” by pinning Mr. Wrestling II on TV.

Wrestling II comes out. He says he doesn’t have to answer every challenge that comes from “a young punk”. Today, though, he has decided that he just wants to. II slaps Orndorff and says it is on. Watson, after talking to II, steps aside.

Paul Orndorff vs. Mr. Wrestling II
Both men hurt each other badly for almost 10 minutes. The crowd comes out of their skin when James J. Dillon comes to ringside. Nick Patrick looks a little too close at the situation and he gets caught by an inadvertent elbow from II. Dillon calls for help and Jim Duggan slides under the bottom rope.

DUGGAN SPEARS WRESTLING II!!!!

Orndorff smiles as wide as the big outdoors. He picks up II and piledrives the masked man. Patrick recovers and counts three @ 12:03. (One commercials break)

PAUL ORNDORFF HAS BECOME “THE TOTAL LEGEND”.

Tony Atlas hits the ring before a 3-on-1 beatdown can occur. Atlas is wearing the rainbow wig. He is screaming, “Duggan, it was Duggan”. The hissing sound can be heard again. Taking his gang to the back, Dillon draws his thumb across his throat, as the first hour fades to black.

END OF THE FIRST HOUR

“Georgia Championship Wrestling”
Hour Two

Ross and Miller look at highlights of Wrestling II-Paul Orndorff from the first hour. Tony Atlas, from the back, says he is honoring the stip of wearing this wig. But, now, he knows that the man who made it happen was Hacksaw Jim Duggan. His purpose in life now will be to make that “goofball” be humiliated just like Atlas was.

Sir Oliver Humperdink is at the desk with Cowboy Ron Bass. Hump remembers that Billy Graham said that, if he couldn’t get back his NFL rings, he didn’t deserve to be around here. Well, he didn’t get the rings and he has left town on a rail. Bass says the bad news is that the HOH doesn’t have the rings, either. They pawned them. Sir Oliver says there are fools born every day. Somebody paid big bucks to get those “pieces of cheap tin”.

Bass says that he is happy that part of the money from that sale was used to purchase the contract of an old friend. Black Bart comes out and declares that The Long Riders are together again. Humperdink says that they are officially challenging The Briscos for the National Tag Team belts. He says that he hears that Jerky Brisco is here and he wants to throw the challenge in his face.

The crowd pops for Jerry coming out. Brisco says that he thought the hot air blew out, when the Andersons flew the coup. Even though Jack is busy at the Brisco Brother’s Body Shop, he can deal with either of these guys in a singles match. Bart pleads for a chance to get  “a homecoming win”. The match is set for later in the hour.

Miller says “STAAAYYY THEEERREE! They’ll be right back
.

******COMMERCIAL******

Jim Ross says that 1983 certainly is off to a rocking start. The fans give a standing ovation to the man who is asked out next: Thunderbolt Patterson. Patterson is his normal excited self. He gets so pumped that he is at a loss for words. Ross asks him to stay out to do color for the next match.

Mike Doggendorff/Davey O’Hannon vs. Kurt Von Hess/Karl Von Shotz
Doggendorff dominates the Germans when he is in there. Patterson says that WTBS is seen all over the country and ‘Bolt remarks that Doggendorff, the former University of Kentucky football great, has really impressed him. O’Hannon tries to press the advantage when he is in but runs into a flying clothesline from Von Shotz. Later O’Hannon submits to Von Hess and the claw hold @ 7:23.

Patterson steps out of camera shot. Miller talks to the winners in front of the desk. Von Hess says that some of that Humperdink money went to the Germans to “what you Americans call buying out a contract”. Von Shotz says that he loves taking American money any way he can. There are no hard feelings.  Miller asks Kurt what he thinks of Doggendorf and his efforts. Von Hess decides  to show him. They go after Doggendorf, who has been checking on O’Hannon.

Patterson hits the ring before the Germans can do much damage to Doggendorff. Patterson shucks, jives, and clobbers the attackers. Doggendorff hits flying tackles on both Von Hess and Von Shotz. Patterson raises the hand of the UK alum, as the villains bail.

Ross says that a mentor may have taken on a project here.  The National Champ is next.

******COMMERCIALS******

Non-Title Match
Masked Superstar defeats Barry Horowitz in a competitive match @ 7:44.

Ross starts the interview with the champ but calls it “infernal noise” when the buzzing sound drowns out comments again. Calmly, ‘Star calls for the new Chairman to come out. McKenzie does just that and says he is going to put his first stamp on all this commotion. James J. Dillon complies with a demand from the big man to “get his carcass” out here.

With all the parties present and accounted for, Superstar says that, if Dillon and his “snakes” want to cross swords with the champ, he isn’t going to be hard to find. Dillon says big words usually mean little guts. He challenges Superstar to put up the National belt. ‘Star says that he didn’t get where he is by ducking the big boys. Tex stops the confrontation by saying that a match will happen between Superstar and a member of this “Viper’s Nest” next week. But, they have to prove themselves before the belt will be up. No shortcuts under his watch. Dillon smiles, as the hissing sound bellows out again.

Speaking of title matches, Miller says the National TV Title will be at stake when we return.

******COMMERCIALS******

National Television Title
Rip Rogers © defeats The Cheetah Kid with a high vertical suplex after a missed elbow drop by The Kid @ 8:32.

Ross talks with Rogers at ringside. He says that normally, a member of Midnight Express, Inc. would have been in his corner. But Rip assured his partners he had everything in hand. He gave them the day off. Rogers starts to give himself a multitude of pats on the back, when Steve Olsonoski cuts in.

O brings up that he gave a World Champ everything he could handle on the Christmas card in Marietta. He says he knows that he can take any one of the ME out for that belt. He knows a World Champ and nobody in The Express is a World Champ. Rogers is livid and “begs Ross to hold him back”. Olsonoski slides into the ring but Rogers thinks better of the one-on-one confrontation. Not today, Rogers says. Not today.

Miller says Brisco vs. Bart is next.

******COMMERCIALS******

Jerry Brisco defeats Black Bart w/Sir Oliver Humperdink and Ron Bass in a wild finish. Brisco has just hit a jaw-jacker and is position for a finishing move. Humperdink pulls at this leg. Brisco kicks the manager away and Bart charges. Jerry feels it and steps aside. Bart rebounds off the ropes, throat first, and is cradled by Brisco for the win @ 10:15. (One commercial break)

Bass hits the ring and a beatdown of Brisco ensues.  The winner doesn’t look like one, as the HOH leaves the ring. Humperdink stops by the desk. He says the body shop is going to have one big time repair job putting Jerry back together. All three men leave laughing.

Ross signs off, saying he will see the fans at the matches.
