NWA Florida TV 1/5/83 The Crutch of the issue...
Jan 7th, 2013, 7:52pm

Championship Wrestling from Florida presents: Southern Championship Wrestling
Telecast 1/5/83 across the Sunshine State with Gordon Solie, Buddy Colt, and Barbara Cleary

*All matches sanctioned by the National Wrestling Alliance*

Interviews and Announcements:
-      Former Southern Heavyweight Champion Barry Windham come out on crutches and with his left knee heavily wrapped. He tells Gordon that after what was done to him by Greg Valentine, it makes him wonder whether championship belts are worth the pain. “I spent New Year’s back in Texas with my father and felling the throbbing in this knee. And I looked at the pictures hanging up in the den, of my dad in the ring, of me playing football, and the newest was of me after winning the Southern Heavyweight Title. But sitting there, hardly able to walk, I kept asking ‘Is it worth it? Is this pain and time away from family worth it?’ And Gordon, right now I’m wondering if it really is.  I mean, I love you fans. I love hearing your cheers. But I’m young and right now, I’m still healthy. And as much as this means to me, I don’t know if I can face being a cripple for the rest of my life.”

-      “Professor” Bill Ash and the Boss come out and Ash tells Buddy Colt what he has planned for the World Junior Heavyweight Champion, Chris Adams, when he gets to Florida next week. “The fans here is Florida don’t deserve to see the best junior heavyweight in the world wrestle here on TV. They’ve had the chance week after week and failed to understand the true greatness that I’ve shown. Instead, next week, they get to see “Judo” Chris Adams come to town and show off. Well let me tell you something Judo boy. Down here in Florida we spell this sport w-r-a-s-s-l-i-n’ and the next champion, well the Boss knows how to spell my name; A-s-h.”

-      After footage of the recent World Heavyweight Title change is shown, Eddie Graham tells Barbara that he still hasn’t heard back from the NWA Board of Directors on the Florida Tag Title situation. “All that I have heard from my fellow board members is that due to some recent actions in territories further up the Atlantic Coast, all tag team challengers are being re-evaluated. I know both teams, my son and Brian Blair and the duo of George and Barr want to face top tier opposition and once the situation is decided, we will get back into the type of tag team action Florida fans expect.”

-      Jake Roberts tells Buddy that Kevin Sullivan can run his mouth all he wants. “Because the simple fact is that I’ve beaten Kevin Sullivan every time he’s stepped foot in the ring with me. I’m younger than you Sullivan. I’m smarter than you. I’m more calculating, controlled than you are. I rule the Legion of Doom because you were never the man to control Florida. It was all in your hands and vanished like smoke on the breeze. The Warlord, the Missing Link, and I are too much for you and any clan you assemble. We will break you like everyone else and this time, no mask will hide you. Now wall will protect you. You’re days in Florida are running out and whether it is weeks, days, or just hours depends not on what you do Sullivan. I matters on when I say you’re finished.”

-      Prior to his match, Southern Heavyweight Champion Greg Valentine comes out and verbally assaults Barry Windham. “You don’t think it’s worth it? You don’t think it’s worth it? You have nothing kid. You know something. Gordon, that man is a disgrace to my profession. You don’t think the pain is worth it? Well let me tell you something Barry Windham. You better count yourself fortunate that your father thought that the pain was worth it. You better be thankful that men like my father, Johnny Valentine, and Dusty Rhodes, and the Briscos and Eddie Graham and Fritz Von Erich thought the pain was worth it or you would be nothing. You make me sick you pimple necked coward. Go run back to Texas. And just in case you want to change your mind, let me give you a visual reminder.”

-      Barry Windham hobbles back on to the set, grabbing the microphone from Gordon. “You’ve gone too far Valentine. I’m gonna be ready for you soon enough and when I am, it won’t be about titles or family. Its gonna be personal and its gonna be about me causing you pain.”

Matches for this telecast:
-      Florida TV Champion Brett Sawyer defeats the Masked Superstar #2 with a side Russian leg sweep to retain the title. After the match, the Boss is seen shaking his head and walking off disappointed in his charge.

-      Jesse Barr and Mike George defeat El Faron and Flama Roja after Barr locks Roja into the spinning toe hold. Mike George then stars calling out Bob Sweetan, yelling that it’s all his fault.

-      “Professor” Bill Ash defeats “Gentleman” Jim Breaks with an Arkansas Whiplash.

-      The Missing Link w/ Jonathan Boyd and King Curtis defeats Pete Doherty with a guided head butt that was followed up with a power slam.

-      In the TV main event, Southern Heavyweight Champion Greg Valentine falls to Omar Atlas via disqualification after slamming the knee of Atlas into the steel ring post. Valentine then locked on the figure four and refused to break the hold until Barry Windham hit the ring and swung wildly at Greg with a crutch. The champion bailed out leaving Atlas in the ring.

Windham wondering if it was worth it and Valentine calling on the spirits of all that made wrestling what it is was classic and worth the reading on its own. I agree. Ash is under appreciated. George needs to forget Sweetan and focus on his team.

Great show.
