“Georgia Championship Wrestling” A Proud Member of the NWA Hosted by: Jim Ross and Freddie Miller Taped: January 12, 1983 @ WTBS Studios Broadcast: January 12, 1983 on WTBS @ 6:05-8:05 Your referee is Tommy Weathers. Ross and Miller welcome the fans to the show. Ross mentions that one of the perks of re-joining the NWA at this time is that all the World Titles have recently changed hands; so there is a new enthusiasm all over the organization. Miller says all the new champs will have some words for the Georgia fans on today’s program. At that point, Sir Oliver Humperdink brings out the HOH. Cowboy Ron Bass, Black Bart, and Bobby Duncum are following the rotund one to the desk. A film clip is shown. Ross and Humperdink talk about Jerry Brisco being tied up in the ropes after a match with Ron Bass in Rome, Georgia. Humperdink is shown getting in some cheap shots. When the show returns, GCW Chairman, Tex McKenzie, has come out to join the interview. The three cowboys surround their manager. Tex says, if he wanted to go after Hump, “the three of you couldn’t stop me”. He is just out to say that he saw that clip earlier. If Humperdink wants to act like a wrestler, he will be more than happy to oblige. Sir Oliver will be teaming with Bass and Bart today in a handicap match against The Briscos. Hump is scared to death but changes his mood after a conference with Duncum. SOH says wrestling is a game of give and take. He says he is more than happy to get in his men’s corner if Bobby Duncum receives a Georgia title shot today, as well. McKenzie says that he is the matchmaker here; not Humperdink. Before much more is said, an angry Dick Slater is heard off screen, being held back by Jack and Jerry Brisco. He yells at McKenzie to make the match so he can bust up Duncum and get payback for last week. Tex says he likes to “keep all the boys happy”, so that match is on, too. Last week, Masked Superstar was told he would find out first hand who the final member of Viper Gold is. We know who it is now and that match will take place next. ******COMMERCIALS****** A clip shows Ted DiBiase teaming with Mike Rotundo and Jim Duggan in a six man match in Rome. DiBiase knocks out Masked Superstar with a black glove shot and pins the National champ. Non-Title Match *Ted DiBiase w/James J. Dillon vs. Masked Superstar DiBiase stalls a lot in the early going to try to get the champ frustrated. It doesn’t work. Then, Ted tries going hold for hold. Superstar gives just as much as he takes. Dillon grabs at the leg of ‘Star allowing DiBiase to get in a knee to the back. He punishes the back but tries for too much when he mounts the ropes for a fist drop later. MS moves at the last second. He clamps on a cobra clutch, as DiBiase grabs his hand. Dillon jumps on the apron. Miller is beside himself, as he points out that DiBiase is adjusting the glove. DiBiase slaps Superstar with the backside of the glove. ‘Star releases the hold and receives a full punch. The masked man goes down like he was shot. Ted makes the cover, when Tommy Weathers turns around. The Viper Gold member makes the cover @ 9:26. Dillon is cheering on his man, as the both pass Ross at the desk. DiBiase says for Jim to “tell that tall drink of water that I guess I have shown him what the needs to see. I will get that National strap next.” Miller says the big Germans are in the WTBS studios next. ******COMMERCIALS****** *Kurt Von Hess/Karl Von Hess defeat Steven Casey/Johnny Mantell when Von Hess gets a submission from Casey with a claw @ 5:57. Miller talks to the winners in the ring. Von Hess says that Thunderbolt Patterson stuck his nose into German business last week. He should have left the beating of Mike Doggendorf alone. Now there will be two Americans carted out of here. Von Shotz says they beat The Oates Brothers so bad that Duggan and Rotundo sent them packing first time out. Pay very close attention to that, says Von Hess. It could happen to Doggendorff or Patterson very soon. A very angry Tony Atlas wrestles next. ******COMMERCIALS****** David Von Erich talks to the “rabid fans of Georgia” in a promo before the next match. He says he knows James J. Dillon from time he spent in the state of Florida. Dillon doesn’t associate with bums. Anytime he has to put the NWA Title up against one of his men, he knows he will be in for a fight. David also says that it will be an honor to face men like Tony Atlas, Masked Superstar, Jack Brisco, and Mr. Wrestling II. Even though the Funks have caused a lot of grief for his family, he will not back away from Dory, either. His dad taught him great respect for the NWA and its stars. That respect will allow him to keep the strap for a long time. *Tony Atlas defeats Joel Deaton with a sleeper @ 7:13. During the match, Jim Duggan comes out and taunts Atlas, who is still wearing the rainbow wig. After the victory, Duggan starts to come in. Atlas goes after him and doesn’t see Rotundo come in from the other side. A beatdown ensues until Dory Funk. Jr comes out. Dillon follows and gets his men to bail. Atlas, when he talks to Ross at the desk, tells Duggan to get some guts and quit hiding behind things like masks and goons. Rotundo needs to stand up, as well. He tells Atlas that they may need to bring the fight to them. Tony says he can’t wait. Ross says that the main event is next. ******COMMERCIALS****** NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion Chris Adams is standing in front of a WCCW banner. He says that he had to put in a lot of time in “some unsavory places” to work his way up the ladder to win the NWA World Junior belt. Still, those spots were a penthouse compared to the outhouse that is Georgia. He says that, when he defends “over there”, he would appreciate “you cretins” bathing on more than just Saturday night. He is a gentlemen and too much “atmosphere” could take him off his game. Georgia Heavyweight Title Dick Slater © vs. Cowboy Bobby Duncum w/Sir Oliver Humperdink During the match, Duncum and Humperdink keep Weathers occupied after throwing Slater to the floor. Black Bart and Ron Bass come out and take turns hitting Slater with the handle of Bass’s bullwhip. Jack and Jerry Brisco drag them back but the damage is done. Slater has to go on the total defensive. He does get some rallies in and looks to be back when Humperdink hits Duncum by mistake. But, Duncum falls into Weathers, putting the ref out for a moment. It allows Duncum to get in a thrust to the throat. Weathers doesn’t see that but does see the bulldog and the cover that follows @ 10:37. BOBBY DUNCUM IS THE NEW GEORGIA HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION Humperdink says something to Ross at the desk while his men are celebrating. He says that McKenzie thought putting him in the ring would be a disadvantage. No, it was a motivation. And, big man, this is all your fault. END OF FIRST HOUR “GEORGIA CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING” SECOND HOUR The second hour begins with a highlight package of the first hour. Ted DiBiase is shown knocking out The Superstar. Bobby Duncum wins the Georgia Heavyweight title from Dick Slater. A locker room clip has Duncum with the GA belt over his shoulder. He says that the championship will not leave the House of Humperdink for a long time. Ross is joined by Steve Olsonoski when the show returns to the studio. He talks with Ross about this confrontation last week with Rip Rogers over the National Television Title. Olsonoski says he will take on any member of ME, INC for that belt and today is the best time to start. Norvell Austin comes out and says that as soon as the contract is presented to ME, INC they will take his request under consideration. But, he isn’t promising anything, you understand. There are a lot of worthy challengers. McKenzie comes out and says that the contracts for TV title defenses were signed by the previous champion. There are no new contracts for ME, INC to sign right now. As the new champs, they are to honor the previous commitments. One of those commitments is to wrestle Steve Olsonoski today for this belt. Read it and weep. Austin reads the contract and throws it into Steve O’s chest. Miller says that the tempers will be running high for that bout and it is next. ******COMMERCIALS****** National Television Title Steve Olsonoski defeats Norvell Austin by DQ @ 9:12 after Randy Rose comes down and blatantly hits Weathers. Olsonoski had connected on a flying forearm and was covering Austin, when Rose did his dirty deed. The ME hustles out, leaving Cooley and Steve O fuming. Cooley says that if both men want to get involved, let’s do a Texas Tornado match right here next week. Olsonoski says he will make sure Sweet Brown Sugar is around to keep Rip Rogers occupied. These guys think we can’t cut corners and they couldn’t be more wrong. Ross says the promising Mike Doggendorff is up next in singles action. ******COMMERCIALS****** Mike Doggendorf defeats Master Blaster I with a powerslam @ 7:13. After the win, Doggendorf is hit from behind by Von Hess and Von Shotz. Doggendorf gives it a great effort, even managing to throw Von Shotz to the floor. But, the numbers prove to be too much for the youngster. He is caught in Von Hess claw and put out. From under the ring, Von Shotz brings out a big University of Kentucky flag and covers Doggendorf with it. Von Hess says that “Daddy Thunderbolt” needs to not leave his kid alone. Ross says that this is going to tick T-Bolt off big time. Miller says that Mr. Wrestling II is next. ******COMMERCIALS****** Mr. Wrestling II defeats Tom Lintz with the million dollar kneelift @ 6:49. II tells Miller at ringside that he makes no excuses for losing last week to Paul Orndorff on TV. Orndorff made a big deal of beating a legend. Wrestling II respects everybody’s opinion of him but taking what he can from every loss and not doing anything the same next time has made him a success. A legend can be debated. Still, let’s see how many of those wins that Orndorff and Viper Gold can string together. A lot of people are lining up to provide opposition. Time will tell who is remembered and who isn’t. Miller says that The Briscos face HOH in the handicap match next. ******COMMERCIALS****** Ricky Steamboat and Jay Youngblood are shown standing in front of the Greensboro Coliseum. Ricky says they love the MACW fans and that they have spurred them right into the NWA World Tag Team Titles. Jay says that right there, though, are the great fans in the state of Georgia. They respect the big time wrestling that Steamboat and Youngblood will bring to their arenas. No matter whom they face good or bad those fans know they will get their money’s worth when the NWA Tag Champs are on the marquee. Handicap Match Jack/Jerry Brisco vs. Black Bart/Cowboy Ron Bass/Sir Oliver Humperdink Humperdink gets in some shots but stays on the outside. He tries to get the win for his boys by throwing powder into Jerry Brisco’s eyes. It backfires and Bart is hit, instead. Jerry pulls Bart and makes him tag Humperdink. Jack throws some wicked forearms into Bart and Bass, knocking them to the floor. Jerry puts the figure four on Hump and gets the QUICK submission @ 8:25. Ross mentions, in the end, that Humperdink may want to stick to managing. Miller agrees. They both says they will see the fans at the matches. © GCW @ NWAClassics 1983
