GCW TV 1/19/83 The Faces Hit the Wall.
Jan 21st, 2013, 8:00pm

“Georgia Championship Wrestling”
A Proud Member of the NWA
Hosted by: Jim Ross and Freddie Miller
Taped: January 19, 1983 @ WTBS Studios
Broadcast: January 19, 1983 on WTBS @ 6:05-8:05

Miller and Ross welcome the fans to the show.

The announcers go right into a clip that shows a post- match altercation from last week. The rumble involves Jim Duggan, Mike Rotundo, Tony Atlas, and Dory Funk, Jr. After the highlight, finishes. Rotundo and his Viper Gold manager, James J. Dillon, are at the desk. Dillon corrects Miller, saying for now on he is to refer to his charge as “The Blue Chipper” Mike Rotundo.

Rotundo takes point, bringing up that world class athletes, like the members of Viper Gold, are the future of this sport. He had some altercations with his mentor, The Destroyer, in other places. That “old man” wanted Rotundo to carry on “his” legacy. The former stars need to accept being “curtain jerkers” or step aside, altogether. It is time to pass the torch and allow the time for the “real deals to shine”. Dillon asks Dory Funk, Jr if he is listening.

Funk comes out and says punks like Rotundo have gotten on his nerves for years. Let’s just get pass the talk and get to the action. You want to take “my place in the show”. Show you are old school tough. Face me today in a 2-out-of-3 falls match. That was the way “this curtain jerkers” knows how to do it. Dillon hesitates but Rotundo jumps in the pool. The fans roar and Ross says not to go anywhere.

******COMMERCIALS******

Rip Rogers © defeats Flying Phil Watson in a defense for the National Television Title. Rogers drives Watson hard to the mat with a brainbuster @ 7:37.

During the match, Ross mentions that this was supposed to be a shot for Sweet Brown Sugar. Watson was chosen as the challenger when Sugar didn’t come to the ring. After the match, a bloody Sweet Brown Sugar storms the ring, a chair in hand. Rogers leaves quickly. Miller hears Sugar say that it took all three Midnight Express members to put him out before the taping. The masked man says he will be around later when Wendell Cooley and Steve Olsonoski face Randy Rose and Norvell Austin in a Texas Tornado match. The beatings will be on the other foot, then.

Last week, Dick Slater lost the Georgia Heavyweight Title to Bobby Duncum of the House of Humperdink. Ross says an angry former champ gets his say next.

******COMMERCIALS******

Dick Slater defeats Barry Horowitz with a shoulder breaker @ 6:55.

Slater storms to the desk after the bout, demanding that Sir Oliver Humperdink and that “yellow dog Duncum get out here”. Ross mentions that he was told by the studio crew that The House is busy with a public appearance early this morning and will be here later. Slater laughs, saying who would want those guys to “drive away a crowd”. Still, he will hang around because he has business to take care of.

Last week, according to Ross, Mike Doggendorf could have used Thunderbolt Patterson to fend off the attack of Karl Von Shotz and Kurt Von Hess. T-Bolt is at the side of his protégée this week and they are up next.

******COMMERCIALS******

Thunderbolt Patterson/Mike Doggendorf defeats Red Dog Lane/Joel Deaton when Doggendorf catches Lane with a middle rope shoulder block after T-Bolt atomic drops the veteran @ 7:12.

Ross meets the winning duo at ringside. They both look at the attack by The Germans last week. After Doggendorf is put out, he is covered by a University of Kentucky flag. The former Wildcat football star says he has given a lot to his alma mater. He is will always be a Kentucky man and will probably end up “Kentucky dead”. Only, Von Hess and Von Shotz didn’t get the job done. Patterson apologizes for not being here last week. Mike reassures him and the two vow to get revenge and “put those bums under their own flag”.

Ross says that Rotundo vs. Funk is next.

******COMMERCIALS******

2-out-of-3 Falls Match
Dory Funk, Jr. vs. Mike Rotundo w/James j. Dillon
Fall One-Rotundo defeats Funk with an airplane spin after kneeing in him in the back. Funk had weakened Rotundo’s right knee for the spinning toe hold. Dillon jumped on the ring apron and got Funk’s attention. Rotundo took advantage and did what it took for the first fall win @ 6:39.
Fall Two: Funk is angry for losing his composure and dropping the first fall. Rotundo is overconfident and misses a knee in the corner. Funk goes in for the toe hold. There is no nonsense this time. He wins fall number two @ 10:26.
Fall three-Both men are counted out @ 15:33, as they fight all over the studio. Jim Duggan comes out with a belt buckle and the two of them batter Funk. Dillon and his cronies leave the Texas favorite son on the floor, bleeding.

END OF THE FIRST HOUR

“GEORGIA CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING”
SECOND HOUR

The beatdown that Funk suffered at the end of the first hour is shown again. After the clip, a beaten down Dory is holding the belt buckle that Viper Gold used to do the damage. Funk says that buckle was given to him by his dad Dory Funk, Sr. He keeps it in his bag every time he goes to an arena and a studio. That means that the buckle that “drew Funk blood” was stolen out of his studio locker. Funk says that he will put the buckle design into the head of every member of Viper Gold.

Ross says that the main event in this hour will be a Texas Tornado match between the team of Wendell Coley/Steve Olsonoski and The Midnight Express. GCW Chairman Tex McKenzie comes out and says that, because of the three-on-one beatdown of Sweet Brown Sugar that cost Sweets his TV Title shot, the masked man will be handcuffed to Rip Rogers. Ross says there will be plenty of action leading up to that match, so stay tuned.

******COMMERCIALS******

Jack Brisco defeats Tom Lintz with a figure four @ 6:53.

Miller, while talking to Brisco in the ring, narrates a clip from the Georgia State Sports Arena in Atlanta. Jack uses Ron Bass’s own bull whip to exact some revenge. Brisco says he heard one time that a man without a temper isn’t worth a plug nickel but a man who can’t control his temper isn’t worth two cents. Brisco apologizes for that display but says that things aren’t over with the HOH by a long shot. A little better focus will go a long way.

Months ago, anybody who said that Masked Superstar and Wrestling II would make an impressive tag team would have been labeled crazy, according to Miller.  Viper Gold has made those strange bedfellows and they are next.

******COMMERCIALS******

Mr. Wrestling II/Masked Superstar defeat Jerry Grey/Tony Zane when II hits Zane with the million dollar knee lift @ 6:10.

At the desk, MS tells Ross that the still isn’t totally comfortable teaming with II but he can’t think of anybody who could give better help against Viper Gold. Ted DiBiase may have gotten in some early shots but it is a marathon not a sprint. Wrestling II says that Superstar and him may not be together long enough to be a legend but they have a better chance than that blowhard Paul Orndorff. Put us together with those riled up guys, Atlas and Funk ,and it will be just cohesive enough to get the job done.

Ross says that The House of Humperdink has arrived at the WTBS studios. A big six man is next.

******COMMERCIALS******

Bobby Duncum/Ron Bass/ Black Bart w/Sir Oliver Humperdink defeat Johnny Mantell/Don Serrano/Steven Casey after Bart hits the Texas Compactor on Casey @ 7:34.

Jack Brisco joins Ross and Miller for commentary. During the match, the Oklahoma native endures taunts from all four House members. Finally, Humperdink hits a nerve with a comment about Jerry. As Bart makes the cover, Jack grabs the manager. Duncum and Bass double team him and Bart joins in. Things look bad until Dick Slater comes out swinging a two-by-four. The HOH bails. Brisco thanks Slater for waiting around until the “public appearance” was done. Slater tells Jack that anytime he and Jerry need a little help, let him know. Duncum won’t hold that Georgia belt for long, according to the former champ.

The Texas Tornado match is up next.

******COMMERCIALS******

Texas Tornado Match
Steve Olsonowski/Wendell Cooley w/Sweet Brown Sugar vs. Randy Rose/Norvell Austin w/Rip Rogers
This one is brutal. Austin misses a top rope elbow early on. Steve O and Cooley double team the injury and render the right arm useless. Rose returns the favor later, with a low blow and a bulldog damaging the neck of Cooley. Sugar tries his best to keep Rogers occupied but numerous shots to Sugar’s forehead keep that from happening. Rogers is able to throw powder in Cooley’s face. A flying head butt from Austin does the job @ 9:44.

The MX leave the faces face down in the ring. Rose says that three good men beat three nothings every time out. Ross says that he wonders, if those three men in the ring had been at full strength, would the results have been different. Rose, Austin, and Rogers leave laughing on that one. Cooley, Sugar, and Olsonoski have to be helped out.

Nice cocky heel promo from Rotundo and Funk-Rotundo should be a really fun match.

I've actually heard of Rip Rogers, so it makes sense he wins this match. But hey, Sweet Brown sugar is ALIVE~! and he decides to kick some a$$.

Poor Horowitz, still losing even back in '83. But, Slater's a top guy so it makes sense.

Funk & Rotundo have a really good match setting up a rematch on an actual show that'll draw money in the future.

Cool little face promo from Brisco that would never be done today since every face has to be the fight fire with fire type.

Hmm...Wrestling II & Superstar are a good team, but it's in their blood to turn on each other in the near future.

Awesome main event match brawl with an ending to build some up heat.
