GCW TV: 1/26/83 Tex Spreads His Wings
Jan 28th, 2013, 6:41pm

“Georgia Championship Wrestling”
A Proud Member of the NWA
Hosted by: Jim Ross and Freddie Miller
Taped: January 26, 1983 @ WTBS Studios
Broadcast: January 26, 1983 on WTBS @ 6:05-7:35

Ross and Miller welcome the fans to the show. Oddly, as the announcers stand at ringside, the fans are shown to be still coming into the WTBS Television Arena. Ross says that, to address that, he is asking the GCW Commissioner Tex McKenzie to come out. The Man from the Alamo comes out, acknowledging the crowd.

Tex says the great fans here were kept from coming in for a good bit because the parking lot and the entrances were blocked off for a police investigation. Dory Funk and the Masked Superstar were attacked, as they got out of their car earlier. Eye witnesses say it was an attack by Mike Rotundo, Jim Duggan, Paul Orndorff, and Jim Dillon. Funk was just opening his trunk to get his gear when the beatdown started. Miller says the police were summoned by a 911 call from a scared fan that arrived early. Funk and Superstar were bailed out by wrestlers coming out from the locker room.

Ross says that he heard that the police wanted to arrest the members of Viper Gold for assault but MS and Dory said no. McKenzie says that Dory is a real man just like his dad. Masked Superstar isn’t the National Champ for being a sissy. They want to handle things in the ring. The Commish says a match between MS/Funk and two members of Viper Gold will happen today. And, since the cops wanted to haul somebody away, there will be a special “sentence”. The loser of the fall will have to leave GCW for 90 days.

Miler hopes the hurting administered by Viper Gold doesn’t end up biting Funk and Superstar in a bad place. Ross says an exciting show is scheduled, even though it’s only 90 minutes this week, due to the Hawks-Bucks game later. Stay tuned.

******COMMERCIALS******

Kurt Von Hess and Karl Von Shotz are shown storming to the desk, when the show returns. Von Hess says those “vermin Americans” Thunderbolt Patterson  and Mike Doggendorf have been telling every “mongrel dog in Georgia” what they are going to do to him and his blood brother. He is calling them out to a match right now “to show these peons who the master men truly are”. The U of Kentucky alum Doggendorff comes out with his football helmet, along with Patterson. T-Bolt says they are ready for the “whoppin’ to begin”.

*Mike Doggendorf/Thunderbolt Patterson vs. Kurt Von Hess/Karl Von Shotz
Doggendorff hits Von Shotz with a spear to give him and Bolt the first prolonged advantage of the contest. Patterson makes a mistake, later, and gets too close to the heel’s corner. Von Hess clubs the fan favorite in the back of the head and gets a tag. He, and a recovered Von Shotz, render the shoulder of Thunderbolt useless.

Still he manages to get an eventual tag to Doggendorf. Bolt tumbles to the floor from exhaustion. He hits his head on the way down. Doggendorf looks strong but he is alone, as Patterson struggles to get to his feet, much less the ring. The vets, being booed unmercifully by the crowd, have Doggendorff bloody and bowed. They even taunt Patterson with a tag when he reaches the apron. Mike is defenseless. Von Hess has the claw clamped on and the crimson is flowing. To save a career, perhaps, T-Bolt gets a towel from under the ring and throws it in.  Nick Patrick calls for the bell, stopping the match and giving the win to The Germans by REFEREE STOPPAGE @ 11:44. (One commercial break)

Von Hess and Von Shotz don’t stop. They hit Patterson with the helmet. They only stop when McKenzie makes an appearance. When the Germans gloat about showing “who the real men were”, Miller says a real man wouldn’t have stopped after the towel was thrown in. Von Hess says the better men determine the real men……

AND SHOVES FREDDIE MILLER TO THE FLOOR.

McKenzie goes into retro. He flings his cowboy hat and bashes both Germans through the interview curtain. He comes back and checks on Miller, who is just not good. The guy who runs the show says Von Hess and Von Shotz are suspended on the spot and, if he has anything to do with it, it will be permenant. Ross calls for another commercials break. Miller is helped to the back.

******COMMERCIALS******

Cowboy Ron Bass w/Sir Oliver Humperdink defeats Don Serrano with a powerslam @ 7:23.

Humperdink and Bass come to the desk but Ross brings up that Black Bart is nowhere to be found. Bass says that Bart asked out of his contract to follow some special lady out California way. Bart is a young buck, after all, and he doesn’t fault his friend. Humperdink says the House won’t be short for long. He has had his eye on a young lion for a while that will be “the future of pro wrestling”. That future will start next week.

Tony Atlas has been revitalized and he is next.

******COMMERCIALS******

Tony Atlas defeats Joel Deaton with a sleeper @ 5:55.

Atlas meets Ross at ringside. He isn’t wearing the rainbow wig that he has had to wear for the last month. Atlas says the weight of the world has been lifted from his shoulders. That is good for him and bad for Jim Duggan. Tony says he will be waiting in the wings to make sure the “90 Days” match later stays on the up and up.

Randy Rose will make a National Television Title defense right here today against Sweet Brown Sugar, according to Ross, and it is next.

******COMMERCIALS******

Randy Rose w/Rip Rogers vs. Sweet Brown Sugar w/Wendell Cooley
Nick Patrick spends more time on the floor keeping order than he does in the ring. In fact, he misses at least a four count by Sugar when Rogers is in his face on the apron. Sugar spins Patrick around and gets in his face, as well. Rose loads his knee pad and hits Sugar with a knee to the chest. Sugar is pinned @ 8:58.

All four men end up fighting it out.  Norvell Austin comes out and posts the Wildcat. Cooley is tied in the ropes. Sugar gets his mask turned around. He is spike piledriven in the floor by all three members of The Midnight Express. Wrestlers come out from the back but they are too late. Sugar is loaded on a stretcher and is wheeled out of the studio.

END OF THE FIRST HOUR

“GEORGIA CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING”
SECOND HOUR

A highlight package of the first hour shows Doggendorf getting injured, Freddie Miller getting shoved by Kurt Von Hess, and Sweet Brown Sugar being wheeled out on a stretcher. Tex McKenzie comes out and makes two announcements. He says that he has called several promoters for support and they have okayed a $5000 fine each for Randy Rose, Norvell Austin, and Rip Rogers.  Also, Freddie Miller is all right but has been told to take the rest of the show off. Kurt Von Hess and Karl Von Shotz have been permenately suspended from Georgia Championship Wrestling. Ross asks Tex to stay for color commentary and The Commish agrees to do so.

Ross remarks that Dick Slater is hot on the heels of Bobby Duncum and he wrestles next.

******COMMERCIALS******

Dick Slater defeats The Cheetah Kid with a belly-to-belly-suplex off a flying body press @ 7:34.

Tex and Ross talk to Slater at ringside. McKenzie says that while he talked to the promoters, he received confirmation of a request by Slater for a very special match. Slater’s face lights up like a Christmas tree. Ross announces that next week there will be an empty arena match taped in this studio on Friday night. Atlanta’s Finest will block every entrance. No House of Humperdink member will be allowed in. Duncum and Slater will settle things without any interference, according to McKenzie. Slater says that is all he wants.

The big “90 Days” tag match is next.

******COMMERCIALS******

Dory Funk, Jr/Masked Superstar vs. Mike Rotundo/Jim Duggan w/James J. Dillon

During this match, Ted DiBiase comes out while Patrick is making a point to Dillon. He hits Superstar, who had fallen to the floor. The National champ is knocked out. Tony Atlas comes out and runs after DiBiase.  Funk has been occupied with Duggan and Rotundo and doesn’t see the sneak attack. He does see his partner on the floor and is distracted just a bit too much. Rotundo rolls up Funk with a schoolboy and a pull of the tights. The son of the Double Cross is gone for 90 days after the pin comes @ 12:03. (Two commercial breaks).

Rotundo is celebrating to the hilt again. The camera zooms in on a shocked Dory Funk, Jr, as Ross sends it to John Sterling and The Atlanta Hawks.

Great stuff going on in GA...Lots of changeover following the draft...Glad to see Tony without the wig...Slater/Duncum empty arena will be brutal, but won't make any money for either...Rotundo continues to look good...I'm hoping Humpy can bring in some good talent....Nice work Johnny!

Nice show. It has a feel of rebuilding after the draft. I know the feeling, Florida stole my Pogo! LOL Wink Anyways, Slater and Duncum have money written all over it, too bad it's in an empty arena. This Viper Gold thing is getting serious. But you have some guys like Superstar that are more than up for the task. Great work, Johnny!

Cool TV show that puts over some of your new characters, gets rid of some of the dead weight, and moves stuff forward!
