Stampede Recap for January 1983
Jan 29th, 2013, 7:35pm

North American Heavyweight Belt
Current Champion: Leo Burke
Having turned back the challenge of Bad News Allen in December, Hart was set to defend against Leo Burke again after Burke attacked Hart with a 2x4 during the January 5th TV taping. Burke used the injury to Hart to take the title away in a quick match. Burke, now champion, has defended against both Bruce & Keith Hart who were trying to defend their injured brother. Jim Neidhart has established himself as the number one contender to the title but so far Burke has managed to hold on.

British Commonwealth Mid-Heavyweight Belt
Current Champion: “The Great” Gama Singh
Singh defends successfully against all comers throughout January and has continuously challenged the AWA world junior champion Tiger Mask. Mask has sent videos stating that the match has been signed and on February 15th, the AWA world title will be on the line. Hubert Gallant has issued challenges to Singh but so far has been turned down as Singh deems him “not a respected challenger”.

International Tag Team Belts
Current Champions: The Memphis Mafia (Ron Starr & Wayne Farris)
The Mafia, having won the tag belts on New Year’s, continue to defend against the likes of Billy Two Eagles & Sonny Two Rivers, Davey Boy & Johnny Smith, and Keith & Bruce Hart. They are up against the biggest threat coming up in front of them when they meet up against the team of Archie Gouldie & Jos LeDuc brought on by a heinous attack on Gouldie.

Other Happenings

In a surprising twist, Jos LeDuc has turned sides and now is a partner of Archie Gouldie after Gouldie was attacked by the International tag champs, the Memphis Mafia. LeDuc chose to help Gouldie because he has decided that no one gets to rid wrestling of “The Stomper” but LeDuc. This weird but effective team have the champions on the run.

Dynamite Kid has continued his war with Dave Finlay with neither man getting more than some hollow victories over each other, most of the contests ending in blood spilled.

“Handsome” Hubert Gallant has targeted young Owen Hart, bloodying the youngster on numerous occasions, trying to injure Owen and taking him out of wrestling. Hart has fought back as hard as he can and these two look to be a good feud with the winner moving up in the middleweight division.

Interesting that Singh going against Gallant is a heel vs. heel match-up. Can't wait for Bret to get back and challenge Burke but Neidhart would be good for a while. Really looking forward to The Mafia and LeDuc/Gouldie.

Good stuff.

Never argue with an idiot. They bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience!

Ok, where to start...

FINALLY....Bret has lost the title. He has to be one of the longest reigning champions in NWAC history. This is what... close to a year? Congrats to Leo Burke for doing what needed to be done.

Gama Singh, right now has to be the most hated junior in all of the AWA with no end of that in sight. He is a great baddie and a fantastic junior champion.

Memphis Mafia....you have one of the best talkers in Farris, could easily be the N.A. champion as well. You have one of the most criminally underrated juniors in Starr. Great talker, great worker. Great tag team. But can they withstand people like the Harts, and now Stomper and LeDuc? I hope so, but we will see.

DK Vs Fit Finlay will be feud of the year in Stampede for me. The stiffness of the matches and the moves....only way it is better is if one can add the British Commonwealth belt too.

Gallant targeting a still young Owen...great feud to start to bring Owen in to his own. Gallant is more than talented enough to keep up with Owen and skilled enough to lead the youngest Hart in their matches.

Just great stuff Mike.
