GCW TV: The Fire Returns to Atlanta 2/2/83
Feb 3rd, 2013, 9:38pm

Georgia Championship Wrestling
A Proud Member of the NWA
Hosted by: Jim Ross and Freddie Miller
Taped: February 2, 1983 @ WTBS Studios
Broadcast: February 2, 1983 on WTBS @ 6:05-8:05

Ross and Miller welcome the fans to the show.

Ross announces that the main event of the first hour will be a National
Television Title defense, Randy Rose, representing ME, INC, will put the title
up against the well-known competitor Bob Backlund. At that point, Randy Rose,
Norvell Austin, and Rip Rogers hit the interview area. Rose demands to know how
Backlund gets this match when he has been in Georgia less than a week.

A clip from a six man match in Waycross shows Backlund getting the winning pin.
Miller says that, and Backlund's reputation, are more than enough credentials.
Austin says that The Midnight Express will handle this, regardless. The new boy
will see their reputation up close and personal.

Ross says that the results of the empty arena match between Dick Slater and
Bobby Duncum will be shown. Jim says that parents may want to allow their
children to leave the room when it is shown. All that and more, next.

******COMMERCIALS******

*Mike Rotundo w/James J. Dillon defeats The Saint with a spinning toe hold @
6:30

Rotundo mocks the now exiled Dory Funk with his choice of a finisher here. He and
Dillon continue to brag, as they approach Miller at ringside.

Dillon reminds Miller to refer to Rotundo as "The Blue Chipper". Mike says there
is no doubt. Funk is gone and, this past week, he beat Armand Rougeau. Rotundo
says he is tired of beating "everybody’s son". He wants some tougher competition,
although he knows there is nobody as younger, more eager, more intense, or as
good as he is. The crowd roars, when Bob Roop enters the shot.

Freddie extends a handshake to the former Olympian. The announcer turns to
Rotundo and asks if Roop is good enough. The Southern Illinois alum answers that
question himself. He says that he has seen young punks like Rotundo for years.
He says that one of the things he loves in this business is shutting their
mouths. Roop says that if he wants to be "The Blue Chipper" he needs to beat
this blue chipper. Rotundo says that will be his pleasure. Dillon, wanting to
confer with is charge, backs the Viper Gold member off.

Miller says that the crowd favorite Mr. Wrestling II is next.

******COMMERCIALS******

Mr. Wrestling II beats Golden Boy Jerry Grey with the million dollar knee lift @
5:49

Paul Orndorff, along with several men in suits, comes to the desk. Leaning on the
ropes, II choses to watch this from the ring. Stan Roy Thomas, from the
University of Tampa, is out to present Orndorff with a distinguished alumni
award. Orndorff is in no way humble about it. He says it is a long time coming.
He has been great for a long time and he faults Thomas and "the good ol' boys"
for taking so long to see it.

A young child berates Orndorff by holding up a "Wrestling II" sign. Paul rips it
up, despite the protests from Dillon. The child is in tears and his dad is up.
Thomas gets the mike and says he told the other men on the nominating committee
that this was a mistake. He announces the presentation is rescinded. Orndorff
grabs Thomas. II spins The Total Legend around and lands several haymakers. The
camera fades to black, as the two fight right off the set.

******COMMERCIALS******

Jim Duggan defeats Paul Diamond with a flying shoulder block followed by a
powerslam @ 6:46.

At the desk, Duggan talks about his college and pro football experience with SMU
and the Atlanta Falcons. He says that Viper Gold is comprised of athletes, not
muscle bound fools and one trick ponies. Tony Atlas comes out and says that,
with that crazy wig gone, he is free and clear to put Duggan in his place. He is
tired of Duggan talking his trash in Tony's house. He wants Duggan next week
right here on TV. That is if Momma Dillon will let Little Jimmy come out and
play. Duggan guarantees he will be there.

Ross says that Bob Backlund faces Randy Rose for the National Television Title
next.

******COMMERCIALS******

National Television Title
Bob Backlund vs. Randy Rose
At different points in the match, Wendell Cooley and Steve Olsonoski come out in
the challenger's corner. Rip Rogers and Norvell Austin stand with the champ.
Rose uses a small chain to keep Backlund of his game. In the end, though, Rose
stops the punishment too soon. He misses a fist drop and Backlund counters with
a chicken wing submission. The ME tries to come in but are blocked off by Cooley
and Steve O. Rose goes under @ 9:49. (One commercial break)

BOB BACKLUND IS THE NEW NATIONAL TV CHAMP

Backlund and his new found friends celebrate in the ring, as the theme music
plays to close out the first hour.

END OF FIRT HOUR

“GEORGIA CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING”
START OF SECOND HOUR

The pictures of Bob Backlund winning the National Television Title are shown to start the second half of the show. Not soon after they finish, Masked Superstar comes out to the desk. He says he is never about yelling and screaming in this sport. He just calmly says what he will do and goes out and does it. ‘Star says that he is tired of the tactics of Ted DiBiase  and Viper Gold. The post-match beat downs, the behind the back stuff, and the constant outside interference? He knows what to do about it since he has been there and done that. He tells Dillon to get his little zombie, Ted DiBiase, out to the ring.

Dillon enters the picture and says his champion will be more than happy to comply. Mr. Superstar just needs to put his belt where his mouth is. MS that he will do just that if DiBiase needs that to grow some kahunas. The black gloved challenger enters the ring but is backed up by Tommy Weathers. Ross says this match will start after the first commercial break.

******COMMERCIALS******

*Masked Superstar © vs. Ted DiBiase w/James J. Dillon
Superstar misses a big elbow in the corner about six minutes into this one and DiBiase capitalizes. He wears down the right arm and it hurts the champ later. Despite having the challenger hurting with a bad leg, he can’t fully clamp down on the cobra clutch. DiBiase is able to maneuver  ‘Star near a turnbuckle. He kicks off it and dives backwards with a bridge. Both men have their shoulders down for two and it looks like both have a shoulder up before three. However, Weathers sees it from a different angle and rules DiBiase was pinned @ 13:39. (Two Commercials breaks)

Dillon is very disgusted with the ruling and throws some papers in the air at the desk. DiBiase is able to calm him down. He stares at the camera and says that Superstar has never faced the deep down darkness that DiBiase knows. Today, the champions knows he should have lost. Imagine the even worse devastation he will feel when the darkness is released. Masked Superstar will never be the same.

******COMMERCIALS******

Jesse Barr/Ron Bass w/Sir Oliver Humperdink defeat Steven Casey/Davey O’Hannon when Bass catches O’Hannon in a powerslam @ 5:55.

Humperdink and Bass step away and let the man they call “Future Shock” take over the interview. Barr says he cut his eye teeth in Florida. The sun rises and sets in the Briscos down in Florida. It made him want to puke. Well, the past is past and that’s where the Briscos need to stay. The House of Humperdink is the wave of the future and Jesse Barr is ready to ride that wave hard. It won’t take long for he and Bass to gel as a unit. When they do, all of the NWA better get the picture in focus real quick.

Miller says a Southern headache that B.C. powders won’t cure is next.

******COMMERCIALS******

*Duke Myers defeats Keith Larson with a piledriver @ 4:54.

After the match, Ross brings out Thunderbolt Patterson. Bolt is much more subdued than normal. He blames himself for not protecting Mike Doggendorf better last week against Von Hess and Von Shotz. His misdealing may have put Mike on the shelf for quite a while. Myers comes over and tells Patterson to get out of his funk. He plans on using Thunderbolt as a stepping stone here in Georgia. When he mops the floor with Patterson, he wants it to mean something. Myers slaps Bolt a couple of times and the thingy-of-the-walk comes back. Myers backs off all the way to the back. Thunderbolt says that Myers should have let a sleeping dog lie. It won’t be pretty now.

Parents, the results of the empty studio match with Dick Slater and Bobby Duncum is next. The footage is graphic and it may not be suitable for our younger viewers.

******COMMERCIALS******

Empty Studio Match
Georgia Heavyweight Title
Bobby Duncum © vs. Dick Slater
Special deputies are blocking all exits and locker room doors as the bout begins. It was taped last night here at the WTBS studios. There are no announcers and there is only referee Nick Patrick to regulate the bout. Slater is near exhausted as he shoves off a bulldog attempt by Duncum late. The champ hits hard into the turnbuckles. He slumps in the corner. Slater charges and…

BOBBY DUNCUM THROWS FIRE IN THE FACE OF DICK SLATER.

Weathers calls for the DQ bell @ 7:27. Deputies summon medical personnel from another part of the building. Duncum grabs his belt and leaves. Slater is shown writhing in pain.

Ross comes back and tells the fans that Slater was burned badly on the right side of his face. It is not known how long he will be out. Discipline against Duncum is pending. Miller and Ross use a somber tone as they close the show.

Congrats to Bobby Backlund. I do hope that the MX take out Cooley and O for sticking their noses where they didn't belong.
I'm marking out for this version of Mike Rotundo. The pairing with Dillon is perfect. I always thought Rotundo would make a great Horseman.
Duke vs 'Bolt is going to be good.

Real good TV...Rotundo is looking good...Roop may teach him lessons that he never wanted to learn...II is still the hand of justice here as he should be...Atlas should dominate Duggan in a feud...Congrats to Backlund...Superstar/DiBiase could put serious butts in seats...I like the team of Barr/Bass...I'm pulling for T-Bolt...Empty arena match was what it was...Don't understand why Duncum would throw fire, just not like his gimmick...Hopefully we will get an answer next week...Great work Johnny!
