Graphic announces

Maple Leaf Wrestling presents
"SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING"
All matches sanctioned by the National Wrestling Alliance - Vincent McMahon, President

Taped at the CHCH-TV (ch. 11) studios in Hamilton ON, Friday February 1st.    Syndicated broadcast on regional channels.

Milton Avruskin is at the desk alone and runs down the card.  We get a replay from last week's show with Gene Kiniski & Lord Athol Layton advising that Kelly Kiniski is headed this way.  A few clips of young Kiniski in action.

As we return to the desk, Milt is no longer alone.

MA:  "Fans,  please join me in welcoming RON MARTINEZ to the broadcast team!  Ron has an excellent repution in, and knowledge of the sport - you practically grew up in the business...errr, sport".

RM:  "That's right, Milt.  I've done a bit of everything, mainly in the "Steel Belt" and in Buffalo especially.  I've just wound up some promoting down south and want to thank my old friend Johnny Powers in recommending me".

MA:  "Well, those clips give you an idea of why Gene Kiniski was not going to be available today!  Kelly Kiniski will debut in a TV title match in our Main Event".

Norm Kimber runs down the upcoming live shows - this Saturday at Maple Leaf Gardens, Sunday in Orillia, Tuesday in Barrie, a BIG event in Niagara Falls on Thursday Feb. 14th and we return to Ottawa NEXT Saturday!

Match 1 - The Raven vs. Randy Scott
One fall 10 minutes

The competitors swipe hands & hook 'er up.

MA:  "This was to be the debut match for The Raven, but he was pressed into service last week against a steaming-mad Mike Sharpe".

RM:  "We'll hear a little more on Mr. Sharpe later".

MA:  "Fans, I need to clear up some possible confusion...Randy Scott in the ring had a few matches when we started up.  You may recall he went by the name RANDY WEBBER.  Randy does work using BOTH names, he had been having better luck lately elsewhere as SCOTT, so he's sticking with it..."

The Raven seems to be having his problems.  Scott rolling him hither & thither with headlock takeovers.

RM:  "It is the rare bird in this sport that has NEVER used an alias or secret identity".

Randy Scott makes his return a success - a snap-mare & double chicken-wing submission win for returning Randy.

COMMERCIAL 1 - It's Bruno Gerussi! "Catch the adventures of me, Relic, Constable Constable and the rest of the gang on THE BEACHCOMBERS...check your local listings"

We return to the podium of the interview area where grizzled, cigar-chomping Dick Beddoes is holding forth.

DB:  "With my good friend GENE KINISKI saying he might be taking things a BIT easier, I'd a thought he could come on...but I have ANOTHER former NWA Canadian Heavyweight champ!  Come on in, MIKE DUBOIS!"

Plaid shirt, toque, suspenders...you know the drill, it's a LUMBERJACK.  Note the shiny double-bit axe.

MD:  "Tanks for aving me, hit as been a while!  Hi took a break from dis crazy rasslin an went UP NORTH'...to de North Woods hove KAY-beck!  Hand you know what Hi did up dere?"

DB:  "You opened a beauty salon?"

MD:  "AH HAHA dat is funny, I was lumberjackin' hup dere!  Hand when dere was time for 'igh jinks, de boys hand Hi would rassle, so Hi ham as good as hever".

DB:  "You were a good champion here in the past..."

MD:  "Hand Hi ave a partner, de other best rassler in camp...come hin, Lumberjack JEAN PIERRE!"

Another big guy, similar duds.

DB:  "Errr, sorry...that was Jean Pierre...what?"

JP:  "Chust Pierre".

DB:  "Mike said Jean Pierre".

JP:  "Non, non!  Pierre LAST name...Jean Pierre ALL name, see?"

DB:  "Good luck to the QUEBEC LUMBERJACKS, Lumberjack Mike and Lumberjack Pierre!"

CHORUS:  "DAT'S JEAN PIERRE!!!"

Norn suppressing a chortle does the intro.

Match 2 - Joyce Grable © vs. Judy Martin
One fall 10 minutes
NON-TITLE MATCH

MA:  "Ron, Maple Leaf is proud to recognize Miss Grable as the NWA Canadian Women's champion".

RM:  "A fine champion & I understand she has her dander up over some chicanery last week involving Martin".

Clip of Martin laying down for the masked Spider Lady plays.  In the ring, Martin knows Grable is fired up.  After the bell, she leans out the ropes & gives a shout out...

Here comes the Spider Lady!  To cheer Judy?  Cornerperson?  NO!  She runs right into the ring!

Even our senior official Wayne Cashman is hard-pressed to prevent the 2 on 1 assault!  Danny Marsh is the back-up ref, he's in the ring but the chaos continues.  Grable breaks free from Spider Lady & boots Martin from the ring.  That looks danegerous, Danny!  He's struggling to keep the masked gal at bay...Grable grabs the mask!

She tugs it off and is surprised at what is revealed!

MA:  "Joyce had suspected that FABULOUS MOOLAH was wearing the mask, but I do not recognize THAT brunette!"

RM:  "Much younger than Moolah, and I was sure from the, errr...body type in that cat-suit that it wasn't Moolah..."

Mystery woman & Martin are escorted away, Joyce asks Norm for the mic.

JG:  "I don't know what the heck is going on, who that ringer was, BUT I STILL think there is a plot!  And I STILL have an answer, in Niagara Falls, WENDI RICHTER will team with me, we'll take on WHOEVER wants to answer for this!  Martin, Leilani, Spider Ladies, Glamour Girls, MAE YOUNG or MOOLAH herself!"

MA:  "Joyce Grable smells a rat, and all signs seem to point to a scheme involving those two attackers & possibly orchestrated by Moolah".

RM:  "As far as women's tag teams go, Richter & Grable are a top ranked team...someone may get their come-uppance!"

MA:  "Fsbulous Moolah has been trying to keep her iron grip on women's wrestling, but the tandem of Grable & Richter has been nearly unstoppable".

COMMERCIAL 2 - This week's episode sponsored by Tim Horton's

MA:  "On next week's "Superstars of Wrestling", we will be hearing from Buddy Roberts.  Note that I did NOT mention Vic Rossitani or Rip Hawk - we may find out from Buddy what is happening with that situation".

RM:  "From reviewing the last match of the Hollywood Bombshells, I'd say something may be up.  One situation that HAS been solved is the Caribbean Sunshine Boys.  Simultaneously winning the International tag belts and suffering the injury to Butcher Bond has led to the appearance of THIS man".

Johnny Kincaid escorts Bobby Gaetano to the ring - tag belts gleaming on their waists.

Match 3 = Bobby Gaetano vs. Mike Allen
One fall 10 minutes

RM:  "The Sunshine Boys will face the Alabama Chain Gang in Niagara Falls, so Gaetano hopes to pick up a tune-up win here".

MA:  "That is correct, Ron.  Like Bond and Kincaid, this is new territory, in fact the North American debut.  Gaetano is very intriguing - not tall, but even with that incredible physique, qualifies as a Light Heavyweight".

In a sportsmanlike way, the new chap is putting the wood to Michael W.

RM:  "Not a typical pro wrestler, he also competes successfully in martial arts and, obviously, body-building, where he has been named "Mr. Europe" for that".

Flummoxed Mike takes to the floor.

MA:  "And although raised in the Caribbean, all his pro wrestling experience is in Japan & Europe.  He now lives in Paris, where he owns a discotheque...oh, Sam Menacker would be interested in THAT!"

Booby G. has retrieved Allen and gets an ankle-lock submission, with the rippling muscles gleaming.  Some female fans are very vocal in their appreciation.

MA:  "There is ONE successful debut, here is a preview of another highly-anticipated debut..."

VTR

Norm Kimber is with Gene & Kelly Kiniski and Moose Morowski.

NK:  "Gene, when a Polish Militia made its appearance here, it was very successful!  Now, you have dipped into the "Gene-pool" for a new member!"

GK:  "That's cute, Norm!  Yes, I am glad we have Kelly here, but he can speak for himself!"

KK:  "Thanks, Dad.  We've had this idea for a while, and both Dad and Moose, well, he's so close I call him "Uncle" Moose, wanted to make room for fresh blood.  I am happy they had The Great Wojo help out, but he wanted to continue his training closer to home.  A few calls and here I am!"

NK:  "And right off the hop, you have a TV title match against the nefarious Ayatollah".

KK:  "One of my last matches, I darn well won the TV title down in Florida, I won't be in awe of Sweet Daddy whatever...or anyone else!"

END VTR

COMMERCIAL 3 - Hinterland Who's Who, "Snowshoe Rabbit"

Match 4 - Johnny Powers vs. Nick DeCarlo
One fall 10 minutes

MA:  "Johnny Powers has told me that he is expecting to face Sheik Ali in Niagara Falls - he has not yet heard whether Ali or Beautiful Bruce has  accepted his offer".

RM:  "That would be a GREAT match!  IS Beautiful Bruce actually the manager?  He seems to be more of a personal assistant, at Ali's beck & call".

The two savvy vets are putting on a good show - DeCarlo has his handshake accepted after bouncing up from a gut-wrench suplex administered by the Golden Adonis.  Johnny then straightens his hair (?) before another hook-up.

RM:  "Two popular, well-respected figures in this region, Milt.  As Johnny & I have been business partners, I hope I am keeping impartial".

The gut-wrench seems to be today's Chef's Special - after a THIRD hard landing, DeCarlo gets his legs pretzelled in a standing grapevine submission.

Kimber offers Johnny his obligatory post-match spiel.

JP:  "Good match, Nick...you ALMOST had me!  Now, I am going public here - Mike Miller, apparently Gene Kiniski is forgoing his Canadian Heavyweight title rematch.  DON'T think there is a shortage of challengers.  In FACT, I suggest you wake up & smell the coffee and do your OWN thinking - rather than let KOWALSKI lead you around by the nose!  You'll regret it..."

NK:  "Who IS it that you've challenged to a match in Niagara Falls, Johnny?"

JP:  "I quite understand that in order to get a TV title match, I have to deal with the luck of the draw...SIKI, if and when MY name gets pulled, I will put an end to this Middle Eastern buffoonery!  But ALI!  YOU are fair game, no draw from a barrel to face YOU!  I made an offer several days ago, get your SHEIK together, and sign the contract!"

More fascinating filler!

MA:  "Fans, you may remember last week, Killer Kowalski pulled Joe Nova out of a match against Mike Sharpe on account of...heartburn, I believe it was.  It seemed awfully fishy so our medical consultant Rex Morgan M.D., gave a physical snd cleared him.  Sharpe was demanding the match take place and we were set to tape the contest...BUT, this is what we got INSTEAD!"

Roll clip.

Mike Sharpe is in the ring & beside himself as Nova appears with Miller AND Kowalski.  He tries a few kicks through the ropes at Killer Kowalski.  The MANAGER offers to fight the big lug!  He pushes Nova aside.

Nova says he's coming in, but he and Kowalski start arguing & jostling...OH MOTHER!  Kowalski puts the CLAW HOLD ON KILLER JOE NOVA!

Big red "X" covers the action

Sharpe looks on very confused-like, Miller looks on with arms folded, very smug-like!

END CLIP

MA:  "Fans, we are ALL stunned!  This should have a direct effect on the February 14th Main Event in Niagara Falls - Gene & Kelly Kiniski versus Joe Nova & Mike Miller - there WAS a signed contract, when asked, Kowalski has responded by REMOVING the names of his team members!  The contract now refers only to a "team managed by Killer Kowalski".  Is this a trap or some kind of ploy?"

RM:  "I tried asking Mr. Kowalski - very politely, I might add - he only SNARLED...and offered ME a CLAW HOLD!"

COMMERCIAL 5

MA:  "Young Kelly Kiniski has entered the studio and is getting a warm reception as he climbs through the ropes.  Dad Gene & "Uncle" Moose have escorted him and remain on the floor.

Shot of the desk where the GOLDEN LADDER props are set up.

RM:  "Now, I understand that for the TV title matches here, there is a stipulation of no seconds, so Gene & Moose will not be allowed to remain.  And I think I really like what I understand of this GOLDEN LADDER lottery!:

There is booing drowning out the last few words.  Beautiful Bruce is leading BOTH Arabian Knights out.  Sheik Ali calls "halt" to the procession.

MA:  "Ali is doing a lot of complaining about the appearance of Gene & Moose...of course HE technically is ALSO not kosher here!"

Words become more heated...Ali and Ayatollah Siki attack the ringsiders!  Brucie is in the mix as he has BRASS KNUCKLES to pass along!  "Big Thunder" is targetted first.

Big red "X" covers the action

RM:  "What's that on the monitor, Milt?"

MA:  "We have to adhere to broadcast rules of the CRTC up here in Canada, Ron.  Some things can't go on the air".

Over the notorious "X", we see that Moose is fighting back...young Kelly is not knowing what to do, NO advice from referee Cashman, as he is calling for assistance.  Kelly takes matters into his own hands - he dives of the apron & floors the Ayatollah!

Commissioner Watson and NWA honcho Lord Athol are now directing the back-up referees in.  Moose & Ali have been going toe to toe and are steered away, what we can show of big Gene, he is up on one knee.  With a hand full of robes, Kelly runs the Ayatollah headfirst into the guardrail.

RM:  "I know Beautiful Bruce has plenty of in-ring experience, he's heading after Kelly!"

BRUCIE bulldogs Kelly onto the same guardrail.  Referees Yorkston & Marsh now break that up.

RM:  "Order is being restored...there is a conference at ringside, the referee, Layton, "Whipper" Watson and Norm..."

From the floor, Kimber makes the announcement.

"As a result of outside interference prior to the match, this Canadian Television title match has been ruled NO CONTEST"

RM:  "What is that ruling going to mean for the Golden Ladder, I wonder?"

A shot of the prop with cards with AYATOLLAH SIKI and KELLY KINISKI on step two.

MA:  "Here is the man who might be able to answer that!"

Incensed Lord Athol Layton to the desk.

LAL:  "A TERRIBLE, dastardly situation, I feel it was NO accident what transpired there!"

MA:  "Will Kelly get a proper opportunity, Your Lordship?"

LAL:  "I am loathe to make a hasty ruling, Mr. Watson and I will need to consider the possible remedies VERY carefully.  But, as a contingency, pending an official decision, I think it prudent to make a drawing for the next TV match, as a stand-by...Oh, sorry - you must be Mr. Martinez!  We'll get to our "how de do's" later, but I must apologize for how this has become a spot of bother..."

Ron nods agreeably, Layton looks off-camera.

LAL:  "Sorry, miss, we are pressed for time, I shall make the drawing myself..."

He roots around in the barrel, a card is passed to Avruskin.

MA:  "CONVICT #2!  Fans, on next week's "Superstars of Wrestling", we'll hopefully have a ruling on Kelly Kiniski's match, and whether the fugitive from the Alabama Chain Gang DOES face the Ayatollah!"

As we close, we get Norm Kimber laying out the February 14th Niagara Falls scheduled card.

A few shows ago, I made reference to a fan newsletter in the territory, as a lark, I named a young Greg Oliver (of SLAM! site) as the writer.  I forwarded the show to Mr. Oliver, noting the great assistance his site has been for my research.

He quite liked the acknowledgement - in fact I was only two yeasrs early on when he actually DID do a newsletter in Toronto!

Jeez...the detail you put in is amazing. I absolutely love the authentic commercial breaks you use and I remember what it was like watching MLW during this time frame. You are one of my favs (but you knew that already) and every week I have to read to see what you do here next. Just great stuff.

Great start for Kiniski. Dubois had a great promo. Powers should rise right to the top here. Roberts putting his teammates out and Kowalski taking out Nova just shows you can't take anything for granted in MLW.

Great stuff.

Glad you remember them commercials - us Canadians knew we was watching top-drawer stuff when we got "Hinterlands Who's Who" (actually very educational PSA Wildlife Service spots).

Double edged sword being TV champ here, GOLDEN LADDER rules mandate weekly defenses.  Poor Ron Ritchie was on, like, 7 weeks straight.  He needed a break!

Thanks for the good notes, guys.
