Georgia Championship Wrestling A Proud Member of the NWA Hosted by: Jim Ross and Freddie Miller Taped: February 9, 1983 @ WTBS Studios Broadcast: February 9, 1983 on WTBS @ 6:05-8:05 Jim Ross and Freddie Miller welcome the fans to the show. Ross says that there was an early morning incident involving the National Heavyweight Champion, Masked Superstar, where he was taken by ambulance to a local medical facility. ‘Star is still there and we will share more details, as they become available. Miller has gone to ringside, where he is joined by one-half of the National Tag Team Champions: Jack Brisco. They look at a clip from a match in Marietta this past week. Jesse Barr had Jerry Brisco in a Texas cloverleaf and refused to break the hold when Jerry got to the ropes. Jack says that the doctors have told him that Jerry needs to rest the knee today. Brisco assures the fans that the titles are safe but he can’t say that about Jesse Barr. Jack says he heard Barr being called “The Future Shock” by The House of Humperdink last week. The shock to Barr’s system may come when he realizes his Georgia wrestling future has to come through Jack Brisco today. Jack throws out the challenge for the main event of the first hour. Miller says it may require some match consolidation but he is sure Tex McKenzie can get it done. Ross says that a different Dick Slater has come back from being burnt last week. He is next. ******COMMERCIALS****** *Dick Slater defeats Juan Reynosa with a piledriver @ 5:55. Slater wears a hockey mask throughout the match. Ross mentions that Slater has medical clearance for it to protect the burn damage from getting infected. Slater walks slowly to the desk after the win. He stands next to Ross with his arms crossed. He and Ross look at the clip from last week’s show where Slater had fire thrown at him in the empty arena match involving Bobby Duncum. The fans gasp collectively but Slater remains with his arms crossed, not saying a word. Ross tries to get a discussion going with Mr. Unpredictable about the prognosis or the plan here but the wrestler remains stoic. Slater starts to walk away but returns, snatching the mike from Ross. He says one word: “COLD”. Ross has a shocked expression, as miller says that a six man tag match featuring the National Television Champ, Bob Backlund, is next. ******COMMERCIALS****** *Bob Backlund, Steve Olsonoski/Wendell Cooley defeat Bob Marcus/Joe Marcus/Tom Lintz after Cooley hits Lintz with a superkick @ 6:47. The three victors are joined by Miller in the ring. One of the ring attendants hands Backlund the TV belt. Bob slings it over his shoulder. Miller starts the interview by asking Backlund why the title was not up today. Backlund says he isn’t sure. He came to the WTBS studios thinking a member of Midnight Express would be exercising their re-match clause. When he got there, he was told lawyers had gotten involved and the defense wouldn’t happen today. Backlund says he respects the job lawyers do but he would rather do a headlock than a lawsuit any day. Cooley says he heard through the grapevine all week that Rogers and Austin were upset that he and Steve O got involved with Bob here. They triple teamed Sweet Brown Sugar to put him out and somehow we are at fault for fighting fire with fire. Steve O asks for a side bar. He says that, if Backlund faces a member of ME, INC. next week, let’s have a tag match right before with us and the remaining two members. That way nobody can fault us for “sticking our noses in”. Miller says that will give the fans something to look forward to next week, for sure. Ross says that Thunderbolt Patterson was called to task last week. T-Bolt has some “testifying” to do next. ******COMMERCIALS****** Larry Lane is in the ring, ready to face Patterson when the show returns. Thunderbolt comes out with an envelope in his hands. He hands it to Lane in the ring. Lane opens it and pulls out some money where it can seen. Lane leaves and Patterson comes back down. Bolt says that, last week, Duke Myers came out ‘to motivate “the thingy of the walk”. Patterson says that there is a spot in the next match now for Myers to do “some more motivation”. Duke is right out and heads to the ring. *Duke Myers vs. Thunderbolt Patterson This one goes all over the studio. Myers uses some stiff rights and cable cords to put Patterson on Dream Street. McGowan lets pretty much everything go. Late, an atomic drop sends Myers to the floor. Paterson follows him out and runs Duke head first into a camera. At this point, Kerry Brown comes out. Ross brings up the history of Kerry and Myers as a team. The bell rings for a DQ @ 7:12, when Myers spins Patterson around for a neckbreaker. Armand Rougeau comes out to even the score. Studio crew members get involved. Myers loses it and ends up hitting one of the ring attendants. Brown shoves one, as well. That attendant falls into a ring post. Tex McKenzie comes out to establish order. Special deputies put Myers and Brown in handcuffs, due to the assault on the ring crew. Ross sends the show to commercial, as the crowd sings the Hey, Hey, Hey: Good-Bye song to Myers and Brown. Jack Brisco vs. Jesse Barr is next ******COMMERCIALS****** *Jack Brisco vs. Jesse Barr w/ Ron Bass and Sir Oliver Humperdink Barr gets way too concerned with stuff outside the ring here. He even taunts Ross and Miller at the desk. Even though the right arm of Jack Brisco is useless, Humperdink is screaming at Barr to turn around. It comes too late. When Barr turns around, he is caught with a jaw jacked into a pin @ 8:05. Ron Bass hits the ring, at this point, and hits a powerslam on a worn out Brisco. Humperdink is beside himself. He says the House of Humperdink is building on the ruins of the Brisco Dynasty. It will be his pleasure to orchestrate all this. Medical personnel are bringing Jack around, as the first hour credits roll. END OF THE FIRST HOUR “Georgia Championship Wrestling” Second Hour A grainy VTR clip shows an ambulance leaving the studios earlier today. Ross verifies that the ambulance had Masked Superstar in it as a passenger. Tex McKenzie, the Chairman of GCW, comes out and gives the fans the details. Evidently, a call was made to Masked Superstar that a special needs child was facing some needed surgery and had expressed a want to see his favorite wrestler, Masked Superstar, before it was done. McKenzie praises “the hearts of all the Georgia wrestlers” and it was a “doggone dirty trick” that was played here. There was no kid. An early arriving Masked Superstar was ambushed by Ted DiBiase and James J. Dillon. That loaded glove opened a nasty cut over the left eye. McKenzie says he has been in touch with ‘Star at the medical facility and he is hot. Fines are coming, for sure. Tony Atlas comes out. He says that. If he didn’t have enough reason to tear into Jim Duggan later on this program, he has it now. The admiration of children is the backbone of this business. He will carry that banner high when he faces that “Viper Gold scum” right here today in front of the best people in the world, the fans of Georgia. Atlas fires up the crowd going into the commercial break. ******COMMERCIALS****** The same special deputies that escorted Kerry Brown and Duke Myers out of the studio earlier now are called upon to escort and protect Ted DiBiase, as they come out to the desk. Ross says that, when he got into this business, he knew there would be things that would disgust him. But, still, he can’t believe Dillon and DiBiase would go this low. DiBiase said last week that there was darkness in him. Point proven. More evidence is coming right now. The deputies remain behind the desk for the match in the ring. *Ted DiBiase w/James J. Dillon defeats D.J. Peterson in a total squash with a figure four @ 4:10. DiBiase plays with the rookie throughout. He hurts both arms and both legs. Mercifully, the match ends when McGowan starts to ring a DQ bell. DiBiase won’t break the hold, though, until the deputies approach the ring. The crowd is near riot, as the angry Ross and Miller apologize for their non-objectivity about this. Miller says Mr. Wrestling II is next. ******COMMERCIALS****** *Mr. Wrestling II defeats Joel Deaton with the million dollar knee lift @ 5:49. II winces a bit when he throws the finisher. At the desk, he says that he is still recovering from some punishment dished out by Paul Orndorff this past week. II says he has been in touch with Superstar at the hospital. He says that MS has had to get 60 stitches over that left eye. WM II says that he is to the point in his career where his legacy is of paramount importance to him. The masked man says he has to suck it up and stand up to this vermin called Viper Gold. There will be no “saving grace’ from him. It may be a last stand but he will undertake it proudly. He wants to be remembered like that. Bob Roop made a re-appearance at the desk last week. He competes in the ring next. ******COMMERCIALS****** *Bob Roop defeats Brickhouse Brown with a shoulder breaker after Brown misses a top rope elbow @ 6:03. Ross mentions that, after all the bedlam today, it is nice to see and commentate on a “totally scientific match”. Roop references the legacy comment made by II in the last segment. One thing that sometimes can’t be passed on to any next generation is humility. You have to go through a situation where you learn the hard way that it isn’t all about you and what you can or cannot do. Mike Rotundo is about to realize he will be going through that situation at the feet of a “full Professor of Pain” in Bob Roop. The Olympian says he has forgotten more submissions than Rotundo knows. Roop says he will show Rotundo, night in and night on, that he isn’t all that. Roop’s smile says he is looking forward to it. Duggan vs. Atlas follows these messages. ******COMMERCIALS****** *Tony Atlas vs. Hacksaw Jim Duggan w/James J. Dillon Rotundo, Paul Orndorff, and Ted DiBiase surround the ring before the bell. Mr. Wrestling II and Bob Roop come out but the odds still aren’t good. Mike runs the shoulder of Atlas into the ring post when Tony and Orndorff double clothesline each other to the studio floor. DiBiase clubs the hurt limb with the glove, as Dillon distracts McGowan. Atlas rallies but can’t lock the full nelson submission on. He tumbles through the ropes in pain. The DQ bell rings, as all the extras go at it @ 8:32. After the bell, Duggan takes out the wrench that is used to tighten the ring ropes. Dillon holds down Atlas’s hand on the ring steps. Hacksaw smashes the tool on the hand. Atlas screams in pain, as the crowd roars. Masked Superstar has returned and is swinging a stretcher. Viper Gold bails quickly. Atlas is checked on by Roop and II. Superstar says to Ross that he won’t rest until Ted DiBiase and all of Viper Gold is carried out on a stretcher, like he was today. Ross and Miller close the show. © GCW @ NWAClassics 1983
