Cow Palace
Daly City, CA
January 25, 1983

World Television Champion Samula defeated Billy Robinson in 16 minutes with a diving splash from the top rope.

Dos Caras defeated Gene Lewis in 9 minutes with a huricanrana.

The Grand Wizard came out with his mysterious new charge before the battle royal.

"After King Kong Bundy's disgrace, I traveled the world, searching my very soul for answers. I found myself in the Middle East, meditating with the old man in the mountain, and I had a vision. I had a vision of a monster prowling the jungles, master of all he saw. And so I journeyed to the island of Tonga, where I found this king of man and beasts, this primordial force of nature! I give you King Konga! Pray for his mercy, for he has none!"

King Konga took "Crazy" Luke Graham's place in the battle royal.

"Pistol" Pez Whatley won the Annual Cow Palace Battle Royal in 32 minutes, last eliminating the "Intelligent, Sensational" Destroyer. Order of elimination:

Gypsy Joe was tossed out by Bob Backlund.

Bugsy McGraw was gorilla pressed and thrown out by Konga.

Afa was pinned by the Destroyer after Konga knocked him out with a boot to the face.

Alexis Smirnoff eliminated himself to escape from Konga.

Backlund was pressed from the ring to the floor by Konga.

Konga was eliminated when he jumped over the top rope to the floor to continue beating on Backlund.

United States Heavyweight Champion "Crusher" Jerry Blackwell was thrown over the top rope by Black Gordman, Great Goliath and the Destroyer.

Gordman and Goliath were eliminated when Whatley ducked and Gordman clotheslined his partner and himself over the top rope.

Sika was eliminated when the Destroyer pulled down the top rope from the ring apron, and his own momentum took him out.

The Destroyer was pinned by Whatley with a German suplex.

Riki Choshu & Yoshiaki Yatsu defeated Pirata Morgan & Satanico in 4 minutes when Choshu made Morgan submit to the scorpion deathlock.

Buck Robley defeated Pat Patterson by reverse decision. Patterson won the match in 26 minutes with a figure-four leglock, but refused to break the hold. It took several ringside officials to tear him away. Afterwards, Patterson picked Robley up and delivered a piledriver.

Robley got the decision but Patterson made the devastating point. Huge, huge upset with Whatley winning the Battle Royal. Interesting that you can pin somebody in a Battle Royal. I may steal that little detail Cool. Konga going after Backlund shows the need for a guiding force. Samula beating Robinson clean again passes the torch completely.

Great show. The Cow Palace faithful went home happy.

I don't actually know if there were pins in the annual Cow Palace battle royals. What I do know is that All Japan has run battle royals in January with pinfalls for essentially forever, and they got the idea from the Cow Palace and Olympic Auditorium version. So it stood to reason that pinfalls be included.

In Japan they often end up with 15 guys all piling on one man for the pin, and he ends up stretchered out. San Francisco battle royals were usually the first match on the card, with a bunch of out of town talent coming in. The evening's matches would then have to be rearrange due to injuries from the battle royal, and some of the fly-ins would work matches.
