AMERICAN HEARTLAND WRESTLING TV 2/23/83 [AWA]
Feb 21st, 2013, 12:33pm

AMERICAN HEARTLAND WRESTLING: ALL-STAR WRESTLING
February 23, 1983
WGN Studios (Chicago, Illinois)
Airing in: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa, Manitoba and Las Vegas, Nevada
Broadcast Team: Gene Okerlund and Larry Nelson
Ring Announcer: Roger Kent
Referees: Marty Miller, Larry Lisowski, and Jimmy Bunning[/b]

We go now to WGN Studios in Chicago to our broadcast team Larry Nelson and ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund.

Larry Nelson: “Welcome wrestling fans to the North American Heartland Wrestling’s flagship program All-Star Wrestling. We are here in beautiful downtown Chicago for another hour of the best professional wrestling in the world today. I’m Larry Nelson and joining me here tonight is the one, the only, Mean Gene Okerlund!”

Gene Okerlund: ‘Thank you very much Larry, it’s a pleasure to be here to present the major leagues of professional wrestling to all these great fans. We have a tremendous show for the fans today – what a main event! Nick Bockwinkel will be going one-on-one with Adrian Adonis! This will be a preview of the upcoming March 12 card in Chicago.”

Larry Nelson: “We will also have Sheik Adnan El-Kaissie here to discuss his upcoming Arabian Chain Match with his archenemy Greg Gagne on that same card.”

The studio audience are on their feet now as Larry Nelson and ‘Mean Gene’ Okerlund are joined by the one and only Bruiser Brody!

Larry Nelson: “One of our two big announcements to make today is that THIS MAN – Bruiser Bordy – will also be in Chicago to face The Noble Sheik in what is being called the Battle of the Bullies!”

Bruiser Brody: “What’s so noble about him? As far as I know, The Sheik likes to take that pencil and jam it in his opponents’ eyes! That don’t sound too noble to me! But that’s OK! That’s exactly the kind of match that Bruiser Brody likes to have.

“No rules, anything can happen! He might jab me with that pencil of his. I might just take it from him and drive into his skull! They’re calling this the battle of the bullies – I LIKE that name. There ain’t nobody in the AWA or anywhere in the world that can bully ME around. So-called Noble Sheik, get your last rites in order because Bruiser Brody is gonna BURY YOU in Chicago! HUSS!!!!! HUSS!!!!! HUSS!!!”

Larry Nelson: “Let’s see the man in action now!”

Match One:
Bruiser Brody vs. Steve Lombardi

There’s no Brooklyn brawling here from Steve Lombardi as he takes an absolutely beating from Bruiser Brody. Brody slams him, hits the leaping elbow drop and the big flying knee drop. The finish sees Brody suplex Lombardi and then come off the ropes with a flying leg drop to score the easy pinfall.

Winner: Bruiser Brody

Larry Nelson and ‘Mean Gene’ Okerlund are joined by the man who made Milwaukee famous – THE CRUSHER!

Gene Okerlund: “Crusher, I’m sure you heard the words of Jerry Blackwell last week. The Mountain from Stone Mountain says he will CRUSH YOU on March 12 and then he will be known as the true Crusher.”

The Crusher: “How many times have I heard dat? How many of dees bums have said dat over da years? Too many tah count! Blackwell – yer more like FATWELL tah me! In Chicago, I’m gonna murdalize ya. I’m gonna take dis hand and hit ya on one side of da head. I’m gonna take da other hand and hit ya on the da other side of da head. I just hope the ring is strong enough to break when you hit dat canvas! Der is only one Crusher and yer lookin’ at him!”

Gene Okerlund: “You heard it straight from the horse’s mouth – we’ll be right back!”

The Crusher: “I’m not no horse!”

COMMERCIAL BREAK

The young Curt Hennig joins Larry Nelson and ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund at the broadcast desk as we come back.

Larry Nelson: “Curt Hennig, it’s great to have you with us. You have a big match coming up in Chicago against the former Olympian, Brad Rheingans. Two fan favorites battling it out!”

Curt Hennig: “Mr. Nelson, I have all the respect in the world for Brad Rheingans. He’s one of the best pure wrestlers in the world today. He’s a man who will probably be a world champion professional wrestler one day. I don’t mean to be immodest, but I think the same could be said of me. So I am looking forward to one heck of a match at the International Amphitheatre.”

Larry Nelson: “Both yourself and Brad Rheingans have to be considered among the rising stars of this sport. But Curt, how do you train for a match against one of the most skilled mat wrestlers in the world today.”

Curt Hennig: “It’s tough, Larry. I know a lot of wrestling holds that can put a man down for the count, but I will admit that Brad knows even more. I think it will come down to who is better conditioned, who is more alert once the bell rings and who has more stamina. I’m training hard. I know Brad is doing the same. It’s sure to be the biggest match of both of our careers so far.”

Larry Nelson: “Thank you very much Curt Hennig. Now, let’s go up to the ring.”

Match Two:
The Legion of Doom (w/ Paul Ellering) vs. The Kelly Brothers

Hawk and Animal make their first in-ring appearance on All-Star Wrestling and they look incredibly impressive. Animal is able to press slam both hefty Kelly siblings in this match, while Hawk shows tremendous agility for his size. Paul Ellering is calling the shots from the floor and after a few minutes he signals that he’s had enough. Animal lifts Mike Kelly up in position for a spine-buster as Hawk hits the ropes and drills him with a clothesline! Animal makes the cover for the academic three count.

Winners: The Legion of Doom

Paul Ellering and his Legion of Doom move over to the broadcast desk where Gene Okerlund is standing by.

Gene Okerlund: “Mr. Ellering – these men appear to be destruction incarnate!”

Paul Ellering: “That is the first smart thing you’ve said in a long time, Okerlund. Larry Hennig, Harley Race, look what you too have got yourselves into! You two fools think you’re a match for my Legion of Doom because you’ve held tag team gold in the past? Well look at those Kelly brothers – THEY held tag team gold out in Arizona. Look at them now!”

Animal: “Destruction! Pain! Agony! These are the things that Hawk and I love the most in this world. We dine on destruction and snack on death. Tell ‘em Hawk!”

Hawk: “WELLLLLLLLL – two questions come to mind! The first – are Larry Hennig and Harley Race getting proper psychological counseling? They couldn’t be! They have willingly signed to face Animal and I in Chicago at the International Amphitheatre! So that means they are either stupid or crazy – my bet is a little of both.

“Now, that brings me to my second question. This one’s real important. That question is – how much do Harley Race and Larry Hennig love their families? Must not be much! Because they just signed their own death warrants.

“It warms my black, disgusting heart to know that lil’ Curt Hennig will be in Chicago at the International Amphitheatre to see his daddy get pounded into dust. Curt shouldn’t be focusing on some dumb Olympian – he should be making funeral plans for his old man!

“See, cuz me and Animal show no mercy. We’re not nice guys. We’re killers, man. And next up on the hitlist is Larry Hennig and his buddy Handsome Harley. It’s gonna be a wild night in Chicagotown for sure – OHHHHHHHHHH WHAT A RUUUUUUUUUUUSH!!!!!”

Paul Ellering: “And as for you, Jim Brunzell, I’m sure you fooled a lot of people last week with your little peptalk. The facts are you are outgunned so get ready to hand over that title – if you still have a hand when I finish with your. You are looking at the next North American Heavyweight Champion!”

Gene Okerlund: “Some truly disturbing comments there from the Legion of Doom and Paul Ellering. We’ll be right back!”

COMMERCIAL BREAK

VTR: Let’s take a look at the famous team from Montreal, Quebec – Jacques Rougeau Jr. and his brother Raymond Rougeau:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TdSDpo1u0s

Larry Nelson: “The Rougeau brothers arrive in American Heartland Wrestling on March 12 at the International Amphitheatre in Chicago!”

Match Three:
AWA USA Heavyweight Champion Jim Brunzell vs. Prince Maivia

Prince Miavia gets an opportunity of a lifetime here in a non-title match against Jim Brunzell. The two men shake hands before the bell, but they are quickly trying to take each other down. Brunzell puts on a wrestling clinic here as he works over the neck and shoulders of the prince. Maivia makes a comeback late in the match, but gets caught flush with Brunzell’s signature dropkick and that is all she wrote! He applies the sleeper hold and quickly Maivia passes out.

Winner: USA Heavyweight Champion Jim Brunzell

AWA USA Heavyweight Champion Jim Brunzell joins Gene Okerlund after the match.

Gene Okerlund: “Congratulations on an impressive victory, champ. I am sure you are now looking ahead at your unification match with Heartland Heavyweight Champion Paul Ellering.”

Jim Brunzell: “You’re exactly right, Mr. Okerlund. There’s no doubt about the fact that Paul Ellering is a dangerous man. I heard him and his Legion of Doom out here earlier making all kinds of threats. That’s not my style. I don’t need to do that to get my point across.

“All I’ll say Ellering is that you might just be a little overconfident. All those muscles, all that bad attitude can get out of a lot of tough situations. But one situation it can’t get you out of is when I grab an arm and take you to the mat in an armbar or a sleeper hold. Once I clamp on that hold, that bad attitude will get you nowhere. And rest assured Ellering, once I get that hold applied – I’m not letting go until you quit or pass out. I’ll see you on March 12.”

Gene Okerlund: “Fans, we’ll be right back.”

COMMERCIAL BREAK

American Television Champion Blackjack Lanza joins Larry Nelson at ringside prior to our main event.

Larry Nelson: “Blackjack, you were the victim of a sneak attack last week by Baron Von Raschke. How are you feeling?”

Blackjack Lanza: “I’m a little beat up, but I’ll be okay. I have to give the Baron a little credit – he took advantage of a situation and got the edge. I know I haven’t been the nicest guy around here, but at the very least I confront a man to his face.

“Baron, you showed these people your true colors. I’m glad it’s all on the table now. On March 2, it will be your claw against my claw. My claw got me this gold. It’s also kept this gold around my waist. I think you’ll find after out match, that it kept this gold right where it is now.”

Larry Nelson: “You heard it, fans. Now let’s go up to Roger Kent.”

Main Event:
Nick Bockwinkel (w/ Ray Stevens) vs. Adrian Adonis (w/ Jesse Ventura)

We have a preview here of the AWA World Tag Team Title match coming up on March 12 in Chicago. This match should be interesting considering Bockwinkel’s comments last week that Ventura and Adonis learned their dirty tricks from watching himself and Ray Stevens. Bockwinkel and Adonis are cautious early on as they lock up. Bockwinkel backs Adonis into the ropes, but backs off with a big grin on his face. That quickly changes as Adonis slugs him and begins stomping away.

The momentum in this one changes several times, with Bockwinkel seem to frequently stop Adonis’s short cuts by anticipating them. The closing moments see Ventura hand Adonis a foreign object while the referee was tending to Bockwinkel. Adonis winds up as Jesse now gets on the apron to distract referee Marty Miller. Before Adonis can connect, Stevens slides in and gives him a low blow! Bockwinkel then grabs the object and decks Adonis with it as Jesse Ventura has a fit on the canvas.

Marty Miller turns around as Bockwinkle makes the cover. Miller counts to three as Ray Stevens holds off Jesse Venura! Nick Bockwinkel and Ray Stevens celebrate on the floor as Jesse Ventura and a groggy Adrian Adonis complain to the referee. Bockwinkel can be heard shouting, ‘I told you so!’ as he and Stevens walk away from ringside.

Winner: Nick Bockwinkel

‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund is joined at ringside by the very dangerous Sheik Adnan El-Kaissie.

Gene Okerlund: “Joining me now is that man who faces Greg Gagne in the Arabian Chain Match at the International Amphitheatre – Sheik Adnan El-Kaissie. Sheik, you have to be a little nervous going into such a dangerous match – a match that can only end when one man quits!”

Sheik Adnan El-Kaissie: “I not scared at all! This is my match! I pick this match! Foolish Gagne – he allow me to pick any kind of match I like. The match I like is one where I am free to spill blood! Gagne, I spill your blood! I will enjoy it. I injure before. I take you out for many months. This time, Gagne, I finish you! Arabian Chain Match – I love it! BWAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!”

Gene Okerlund: “I have a bad feeling about this match. We’ll be right back to wrap up.”

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Lord James Blears is with ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund and Larry Nelson for our final moments.

Larry Nelson: “We just have a few moments left, but I know you have a major announcement to make, Lord Blears!”

Lord James Blears: “Indeed I do, Mr. Nelson. I think we all heard Fred Blassie on All-Star Wrestling last week claiming that his man Tsuruta is the only real giant of professional wrestling. Well, we’ll see firsthand if he’s right because in Chicago on March 12, we will have the Giant Tsuruta against… his fellow countryman Giant Baba!”

Gene Okerlund: “Oh my goodness! Thank you very much Lord Blears for that announcement. That will be one heck of a match! Fans, don’t you dare miss it. And don’t you dare miss All-Star Wrestling next where I’m told we will have a match just signed – Jesse Ventura looks for revenge as he goes up against Ray Stevens!”

Lord James Blears: “Yes, that match will occur next week!”

Gene Okerlund: “I for one cannot wait. Lord Blears, thank you! Larry Nelson, thank you! Roger Kent, thank you! We’ll see you right here next week on another episode of All-Star Wrestling!

Great promos from Brody, Crusher, and Hennig. The way you have portrayed Hennig and Rheingans makes me wonder about the fence. Great psychological mind game write-up for Bock Adonis. Gagne better watch out. The snide remark to Curt in the RW promo made me stand up and take notice.

Great build-up to the big Amphitheatre card.

As always a really good shew.
I'm really looking forward to the Rougeau's arrival.
I'm not sure the Sheik would have ever gotten over in the AWA but it's interesting to see him here in the fantasy world.
Gagne vs Adnan and Ellerat vs Brunzell both have my attention.
