Georgia Championship Wrestling A Proud Member of the NWA Hosted by: Jim Ross and Freddie Miller Taped: February 23, 1983 @ WTBS Studios Broadcast: February 23, 1983 on WTBS @ 6:05-8:05 Ross and Miller welcome the fans to the show. The referee for today is Tommy Weathers. Mr. Wrestling II joins the announce duo and the crowd goes bonkers. The three of them play a highlight clip from the Lumberjack Match in Augusta this past week. Mike Rotundo, who was a Lumberjack, loads his knee pad and lands a flying knee to II’s head. II says he guesses it comes with the territory of signing an open contract. That shows more guts than brains. But, he learned from his mistake. Wrestling II will have his own Lumberjacks next time he faces Paul Orndorff, as well. And he wants next time to be today. James J. Dillon comes out and the WTBS crowd reigns down boos. Dillon smiles and quickly accepts the challenge thrown down by II. The smile turns to laughter. Dillon says it is a matter of eroding skills and a career that is close to coming to a screeching halt vs. an athlete at the peak of his career and at the cusp of greatness. Dillon says it will be a pleasure to speed up the process. II responds by saying the old war horse isn’t ready for the glue factory quite yet. The crowd shows they can’t wait, as Ross sends the program to commercial. ******COMMERCIALS****** *Armand Rougeau defeats “Golden Boy” Jerry Grey with a flying body press @ 6:08. As Tommy Weathers raises the hand of Rougeau, Dynamite Wayne Ferris hits the ring. He throws Rougeau over the top rope to the floor. Quickly following the Canadian out, Ferris runs his head into a ring post. Rolling Rougeau back in, he points to different sections of the crowd, teasing a spinning neckbreaker. Finally, Ferris shimmies and drops the move. Thunderbolt Patterson comes in and Ferris bails. He goes over to the desk while ‘Bolt checks on Armand. He asks Ross how Amanda, now. This pretty girl should not give any kind of challenge to a real man like him. He asks all the toothless sows at home how their man looks up against pure Dynamite. Ferris flexes a few times before leaving. Miller says that he will try to talk to Dick Slater, again this week, coming up next. ******COMMERCIALS****** Dick Slater comes out to the interview desk. He has the hockey mask in his hand and Miller gets excited at the prospect of some comments from him. Slater assumes the same position as last week, though, standing with his arms crossed and deadly silent. Miller gives up quicker than last time and Slater hits the ring. *Dick Slater defeats Bob Marcus with a running bulldog @ 6:49. During the match, Slater dons the mask and breaks some rules. A staredown toward Weathers is included, as well. After Slater walks right past the desk, Ross says this takes the “Mr. Unpredictable label to another level”. Viper Gold member Hacksaw Jim Duggan makes an appearance next. ******COMMERCIALS****** *Hacksaw Jim Duggan w/J.J. Dillon defeats Keith Larson with a powerslam after a three-point football tackle @ 9:14. More action from the Lumberjack match in Augusta airs, when the duo talks to Ross. Duggan is knocked silly when Atlas meets a flying football tackle by Duggan with his cast. Duggan says that he learned a lot of different ways to deal with guys using a cast during his Falcon days. He will turn that weapon around and shove it into a very, dark place. Having the deviousness of James J. Dillon along for the ride will get the job done quicker and better. Miller says the main event is next. ******COMMERCIALS****** *LUMBERJACK MATCH MR. WRESTLING II VS. “THE TOTAL LEGEND” PAUL ORNDORFF w/JAMES J. DILLON The Lumberjacks are: Mike Rotundo, Ted DiBiase, The Mongolian Stomper, Rip Rogers, Bob Roop, Masked Superstar, Thunderbolt Patterson, and Wendell Cooley This match has a lot of levels. Rotundo drives the shoulder of Bob Roop into the ring steps. DiBiase is clobbered by the stretcher of the Masked Superstar, when it is gotten from behind the interview curtain. Both Wrestling II and Orndorff are bleeding when the pivotal point in the match is reached. Thunderbolt Patterson and The Mongolian Stomper are slugging it out. Stomper falls back from an especially stiff right from Patterson. Both II and Orndorff are on the floor while the other battles are taking place. II is setting up for the million dollar knee lift. Orndorff sees an opening. Stomper falls into the masked man. Orndorff grabs the trunks of Wrestling II and pulls him hard into a ringpost. II is out. Orndorff rolls back in and takes a cheap COUNTOUT win @ 13:35. (Two commercial breaks) Dillon is beside himself at the desk. He says that Wrestling II had no youth and no future left going into the match. Now, he has no luck, either. Patterson is seen apologizing to II, as the first hour closes. END OF THE FIRST HOUR “GEORGIA CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING” SECOND HOUR The show opens with a clip of the finish of the NWA World Tag Team Championship this past week in Augusta. Jay Youngblood calls Jerry Brisco a “bald eagle”. Jerry loses his temper and runs right into a flying chop by Ricky Steamboat. The Briscos shake hands with the champs after the match. Jerry looks really upset. He tells Ross, when the show returns live, that the disrespect shown by Jay Youngblood will not be forgotten and will be addressed at a later date. Jack says that two teams have thrown down a challenge to the National Tag Team Champs and they are here to hear the arguments. Ross comments that that is just the type of men the Briscos are. Sir Oliver Humperdink comes out with Cowboy Ron Bass and Jesse Barr. Jerry says that these two have tried and haven’t been able to get it done. Why are they getting any more shots? Bass tells Jack that Junior better back off or the Gainesville beatdown will continue. Hump says the Briscos have been protected so much and for so long that it may take a while to get those belts. His men have the best chance of anybody around here to do it. The Midnight Express, INC. come out. Norvell Austin asks “Fat Boy” if he saw the program last week. They painted yellow streaks down the backs of Steve O and Wendell Cooley. Randy Rose says that The ME is the talk of the wrestling world and they deserve their shot at tag gold now. Barr brings up that if three guys couldn’t keep one TV belt, how were they going to beat two guys like Jack and Jerry Brisco? The heels almost come to blows, when Jerry makes a suggestion. The fans want to see these guys beat each other’s brains out. Let it happen and the winner gets a shot at The National Tag Team Titles. Hump agrees and Rose gives his okay. Ross says Bob Backlund will defend the TV Title, as well. Don’t go away. ******COMMERCIALS****** *National Television Title Bob Backlund © vs. Dusty Wolfe Wolfe comes out and gets in some good offense that centers on the right elbow of the champ. Dusty manages to reach the ropes when Backlund applies the chicken wing hold due to the punishment. Still, the champion shows his mettle by adjusting his strategy. He focuses in on the ribs of the challenger. A double foot stomp from the top rope ends the game effort by Wolfe @ 9:03. An exasperated Backlund is joined by Ross at ringside. Bob says that Dusty Wolfe is really a tough competitor that could have gotten this belt with a break. Most times, a successful title defense revolves around skill. Still, good luck never hurts. Big Tex McKenzie, the GCW Chairman, comes out and congratulates Bob on his win. He also announces that Backlund has been awarded, by a vote of the promoters, a shot at David Von Erich and the NWA World Heavyweight Title. The match will take place this coming Thursday night at the Albany Civic Center. Backlund thanks the chairman and vows to live up to the confidence shown to him by the promoters. He says that he has known the Von Erichs for a long time and it will be an honor to face David. He knows that they believe in doing things the right way and it will be a nice change to be able to go out and just wrestle for all these great fans. Miller says that Mike Rotundo is next. ******COMMERCIALS****** *Mike Rotundo w/James J. Dillon defeats Vinnie Valentino with an airplane spin @ 7:38. Ross jump right into the fire and asks how a man like Rotundo, who has shown sportsmanship in the past, can feel comfortable taking cheap shots like Viper Gold specializes in. Rotundo answers by talking about his days at Syracuse University. The football team wasn’t the only sport that looked at film. The wrestling team did it, too. And it won them a lot of matches and meets. Rotundo says he found a weakness in Bob Roop by looking at his shoulder breaker over and over. Running Roop into the ring steps during the earlier Lumberjack match made that weakness even more pronounced. Cheap shots will get the job done just as effectively as being above board will. The bottom line is winning. Viper Gold is about winning. By any means necessary. Miller says another man who pulls no punches about his “aggressive style” is Ted DiBiase. The possessor of the black glove is next. ******COMMERCIALS****** *Ted DiBiase w/James J. Dillon defeats Johnny Mantell with a figure four @ 6:48 DiBiase and Dillon are not happy campers when they get to the desk. DiBiase is sick and tired of being sick and tired about the double standard. These peons argue about my glove and the National Champ clobbers everybody with a stretcher. Nobody says one word of complaint about that. Well, it is time to man up. Superstar, states DiBiase, you were carried out on that stretcher once and I want it to happen again. On the night after Easter, March 25, James J, I want to wrestle Masked Superstar for that belt in a stretcher match. I don’t care what it takes: I want it done. Dillon says that it will be his pleasure. Ross says that the “battle of the bullies” is next. ******COMMERCIALS****** Winners Face The Briscos in Rome This Week Norvell Austin/Randy Rose w/Rip Rogers vs. Ron Bass/Jesse Barr w/Sir Oliver Humperdink Rogers chases Humperdink all around the ring and, basically, negates his influence on the outcome. Barr takes advantage of a missed diving head butt by Austin and the HOH look ready to win. The crowd roars when Bobby Duncum runs out from the interview curtain followed by Dick Slater hot on his heels. Duncum rolls into the ring and Slater follows. Nobody touches the legal men but Barr is distracted. Rose is tagged in. When Barr turns around, he is hit with a jaw jacker by Rose, who grabs the trunks and pins “Future Shock “@ 11:04. (One commercial break) The HOH leave the ring area yelling for Slater. Jack and Jerry Brisco, who were out for color, have a staredown with Rose and Austin. Rogers tries to push the numbers edge but Wendell Cooley comes out to stand with the champs. Ross closes the show by telling the fans to get their tickets for this one. © GCW @ NWAClassics 1983
