NWA MACW Feb 83 Catch Up pt 2: Burn Baby Burn
Mar 2nd, 2013, 3:14pm

Television taped 2/12/83 WRAL Studios in Raleigh, North Carolina, Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, hosts Bob Caudle and David Crockett, World Wide Wrestling, host: Rich Landrum. Broadcast weekend of 2/15-2/2/17.

United States Heavyweight Title

A VTR is shown of Hulk Hogan’s match with the Mighty Igor and Andre the Giant coming in and saving the day for his friend. When the tape is over David Crockett tells Hogan it looks like he has some BIG trouble. Hogan, along with his manager Buddy Rogers, says he doesn’t care about Andre and the one who has big trouble is Wahoo McDaniel. Hogan says he will defeat Wahoo for the United States Title and then in April defeat David Von Erich for the NWA World Title.

Later in the show, Wahoo McDaniel says so far Hogan’s claim for the US belt has come up empty. McDaniel calls Hogan a blowhard and says he take care of Hulk if Andre doesn’t beat him to it. Wahoo says he knows the fans are the ones who will decide who faces Von Erich for the World Title on April 13 in Greensboro, but says he feels he is the number one contender and the US Title proves it.

Wahoo adds, he knows Harley Race is looking to regain the belt and improving his chances at Von Erich. He says Race is determined but that is not going to happen.

Mid Atlantic Heavyweight Title:

The Iron Sheik says he is the greatest Mid Atlantic Champion ever and he isn’t even an American. He says if fans in the Mid Atlantic are smart they will vote for him to receive a world title shot in April. He says no one in the area has held their belts longer than he has held his, and that means he is the number one contender. Sheik says Harley Davidson stole his boot and he wants it back. He says he has called the Norfolk Police Department but they haven’t returned his calls. He says he will take matters into his own hands and get his boot back and it will cost Davidson in blood.

Later, Davidson came out with the Sheik’s boot.  He says he call feel it’s heavier than a regular wrestling boot but hasn’t been able to get inside of if without destroying the boot.  Davidson says he then came up with a better idea… wear the boot. He sits in a folding chair and begins to put the boot on. The 6’7 Davidson trying to put the boot of the 6’0 Sheik is a comical sight. “I can’t get the dang blamed thing on!” Davidson says as Crockett tries not to laugh. “Well, I guess I will just have to think of something else.” Davidson says if Sheik wants the boot back to come and get it. He adds he wants the Mid Atlantic title to bring it home for “his people.”

NWA Television Title:

The Nation of Ladd’s Master G says he is in hot pursuit of Mark Youngblood for the title. He called Youngblood’s win a fluke and says Ernie Ladd and Miss Linda have a “can’t miss” strategy to get the belt back.

The Elite’s Larry Zbyszko, along with manager Buddy Rogers, says Youngblood’s days as champion will soon be over. Zbyszko says “by hook or by crook that belt will be mine!”

Eddy Mansfield, with Rip Hawk, has also put his bid in for a shot against Youngblood for the belt. He says he is better than Youngblood and better looking. He and Hawk give double profile shots and walk off.

NWA Television Champion Mark Youngblood says he knows he is a wanted man but isn’t worried about. He says he’s beaten G once and he’ll do it again. He adds if Ladd and Linda have put their heads together than it equals about a half a brain. He says Larry Zbyszko is looking pretty desperate. He says knows to beware of the “crook” part of Zbyszko’s statement adding with Rogers behind him, anything is possible. Mark then turns his attention to Eddy Mansfield and Rip Hawk. He says everyone in MACW knows what Rip Hawk is capable of, adding his father use to tell him stories about Hawk as a kid. He says it isn’t going to matter because is ready for anything Mansfield or Hawk throws at him.

The Atlantic States Tag Team Title:

Ole and Arn Anderson along with Gene Anderson come out. Ole says the World Tag Team champions, Ricky Steamboat and Jay Youngblood are ducking them. He adds it’s only a matter of time the world belts are where they belong. Arn says Youngblood has a yellow streak as long as the road to New Mexico. He says the Andersons are going to reign supreme for a long time to come.

Buzz Tyler teamed with Johnny Weaver in the show and the newly formed duo pretty easily handled the team of Barry Horowitz and Golden Boy Grey. Afterwards, Weaver said they are going after The Andersons and the Atlantic States Titles. Bob Caudle told Buzz, the fans have given him the nickname of “Tasmanian Devil” because he’s compact and destroys everything in sight. The South Carolina native laughed and said he and Weaver are going to destroy the Andersons.

On WWW, Rich Landrum played a tape from Bruiser Brody. Brody says he and Abdullah the Butcher are going to be the worst nightmare The Andersons have ever had. He added he and Abby do not care what teams they have to destroy on the way to the Atlantic States Tag Team Titles and eventually the World Tag Team Titles.

The Roddy Piper – Magnum Terry Allen Situation:

Earlier in the program, MACW, Roddy Piper was talking about how he would destroy Terry Allen later in the program. Saying Allen “is getting loans from all of his friends just so he can be beaten up by little ol’ me!” Buddy Rogers told Piper he wasn’t pleased about not being consulted on this idea before Piper agreed to it. Piper gave Rogers a look, but didn’t say anything. “Just remember, Roddy, you are part of a team.”

The challenge was issued the week before that Piper and Allen each would put up 10 grand a piece to face each other on television this week. Piper comes out with his envelope full of cash and Allen comes out with his.

The two start jawing at each other but Crockett bravely/foolishly stands between them and tells them to save it for the ring.  Allen glances away from Piper to get Crockett out of the way, and Piper seizes the opportunity. Piper nails Allen hard and attacks him. Roddy slams his opponents head into the ring post. And then outside of the ring on the apron, rubs Allen’s face across the canvas. Allen screams in pain. Piper rolls him in the ring and pops him square in the eye. Referee Sonny Fargo tries to get Piper off Allen but to no avail. Allen tries to get to his knees but Piper kicks him in the face and rubs Allen’s face in the mat again. Piper then drags Allen outside of the ring and slams his head into the concrete floor then rubs his face into everything he can find. At the announcer’s desk, Piper manically slams Allen’s head into the desk, breaking it. Roddy takes a piece of wood and rubs Allen’s burned side of his face with it. Allen is now badly burned and bleeding. Piper delivers one final kick to Allen’s head and a good bye spit. He grabs Allen’s envelope of money tucking it into his trunks, snickers, and starts to walk off when he is attacked by Paul Jones. Jones and Piper fight for a few seconds until Piper can flee. Jones and other wrestlers go over to help Allen who is a mess. The show goes off the air with his friends getting Allen out of there.

The hated Rowdy Roddy Piper took on his popular rival Magnum Terry Allen.
Fans in Pasquatank County were shocked to see the hometown hero (Elizabeth City is within a half hour from Chesapeake), Allen come to the ring with bandages on is face and burn marks. Piper came out sneering. Allen didn’t wait for Piper to get to the ring. Terry met Piper as soon as he was clear of the fans and laid into him. The match never officially got started, as Allen just beat Piper all over the ring, inside and out. Piper wasn’t able to put up much offense as Allen pounded away on him. At one point some of Allen’s bandages came off, but the anger was upon him and he didn’t seem to notice. The fight went on as Referee Sonny Fargo asked for help from the back and didn’t get any. Allen had Piper busted open as the fans went crazy. Police had to keep people away from the ring. At one point, Allen piledrove Piper in the center of the ring and yelled for the Scot to get up. Piper slowly moved to get up and Allen kicked him in the midsection like a football punt. Finally, after about 15 minutes of fighting, or Allen kicking the snot out of Piper, Rip Hawk, Eddy Mansfield and Tiger Chung Lee came out to get Piper out of there as Allen stood in the ring and glared at his adversary leaving and Fargo ruled the match a no contest.

The Main Event was a six man tag team match featuring Wahoo McDaniel, Magnum Terry Allen and Paul Jones against Rowdy Roddy Piper, Hulk Hogan, and Larry Zbyszko with Buddy Rogers
. This match deteriorated soon after the opening bell as Rogers’ team couldn’t control Piper and Wahoo and Jones couldn’t control Allen. The bandaged warriors went after each other right after the bell and fought. Neither man was worried about the team situation as they tore into each other. Within minutes, both men were bleeding and when they both went out of the ring, Referee Sonny Fargo did something clever. He told the members of both teams to stay put. He counted both Piper and Allen out and ordered them back to the dressing room which was where the fight was headed in the first place. Fargo then restarted the match as a tag match between Wahoo and Jones against Hogan and Zbyszko with Rogers outside of the ring. In 21:15 Wahoo and Jones won the match when Jones pinned Zbyszko unexpectedly with a backslide.

In other bouts…
-      Eddie Mansfield w/Rip Hawk defeated Robert Gibson in 11:15.
-      Ricky Morton defeated Tiger Chung Lee w/Rip Hawk in 12:50.

The Atlantic States Tag Team Champions, Ole and Arn Anderson put the belts on the line in front of a sold out gymnasium against Johnny Weaver and Harley Davidson
. For a new tag team, Davidson and Weaver worked well together. Davidson gave Arn fits and tossed the junior member of the firm across the ring like a rag doll at times.  When Weaver snared in Ole in the sleeper, Anderson knew he had no place to go and signaled for Arn. Arn then jumped from the top turnbuckles to break the hold. Davidson got in the ring and attacked Arn while Ole went to work on Weaver. Davidson and Arn fell out of the ring fighting and inside the ring, Ole thought he had Weaver as he whipped him into the ropes. Weaver ducked under an attempted elbow smash and snared Ole in the sleeper again. This time, Gene Anderson hit the ring and attacked Weaver. The referee Stu Schwartz disqualified The Andersons at 20:21 for outside interference. Gene and Ole attacked Weaver while Davidson and Arn fought outside the ring. Soon the Tasmanian Devil Buzz Tyler hit the ring and the fan favorites got the upperhand and chased the villains from the ring. On the way back to the dressing room, Arn was getting grief from some punk in the stands named Mike. Arn gave him a dirty look and walked back to the dressing room.  Grin

In other matches…
-      In a title unification match Mid Atlantic Champion, The Iron Sheik and NWA Television Champion Mark Youngblood went to a 30minute draw.

Arn and Ole Andersons w/Gene Anderson put the Atlantic States Tag Team Titles on the line against Johnny Weaver and The Tasmanian Devil Buzz Tyler.
The team of Tyler and Weaver gave The Anderson fits as Weaver’s wisdom and Buzz’s energy made for a solid combination. Unfortunately for the fan favorites Buzz got a bit zealous and knocked the referee out of the ring causing a melee to develop. In that time Weaver and Tyler ended up facing all three Andersons. Then from the back, Bruiser Brody and Abdullah the Butcher hit the ring and it became a free for all. It was The Andersons versus Brody and Abdullah versus Weaver and Tyler. Tommy Young got to his feet looked in the ring and declared the contest a double disqualification at 22:34. Weaver corralled Buzz and left the ring as Brody and Abby took it to The Andersons who eventually fled the ring.

In other bouts…
-      Wahoo McDaniel successfully defended the United States Heavyweight Title in a bloody cage match against Harley Race in 30:19.

-      Magnum Terry Allen and Mark Youngblood beat Larry Zbyszko and Rowdy Roddy Piper w/Buddy Rogers at 16:24 when Youngblood pinned Zbyszko. At about 6 minutes into the match, after yelling at each other, Piper and Allen left their corners and met at ringside and started fighting. Ignoring the protests of Rogers, Piper fought Allen and the two ended up fighting back to the dressing room…leaving Youngblood and Zbyszko to face each other.

Allen and Piper could be the top feud on the board.  Great work.

Allen vs Piper is becoming a great feud.
There is no way that Mark Youngblood can survive here. He could use some backup from his Dad.
I'm really liking your use of Buzz Tyler. You can call him Taz or Avalanche but one thing that never changes is that he's going to be rompin' and a stompin'.

Thanks guys. I know in 83 Allen was starting to get his wings in Florida and Piper was already a star, but it just seemed to fit when I started writing it. It just sorta flows and the fact that Allen is a product of the area brings it together well, I think.

The Tasmanian Devil thing worked. I know Avalanche was his traditional nick name, but as a face, a local product, like Allen (Buzz is from SC but billed from Tn), it gives it a protecting the hometown feel and putting him with Weaver against the Andersons gives the Dean a great attack dog against the tag champs.

I do have a question for you guys, do you know what venue MACW used in Wilmington in the winter months. I picked Cape Fear Community College Gym because it was there in the 80s, but I have no clue. I know they used Legion Stadium in the summer, but I doubt they had the boys outside in 30 degree weather in the winter.

Thanks for the feedback, Guys.
