Championship Wrestling from Florida presents: Southern Championship Wrestling Telecast 3/9/83 across the Sunshine State with Gordon Solie, Buddy Colt, and Barbara Cleary *Matches sanctioned by the AWA, the Major League of Professional Wrestling* Interviews and Announcements: - Gordon tells fans that today we will see the AWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion in action, a familiar face to Florida fans, the Japanese star Tiger Mask. This brings out “Professor” Bill Ash who seems more upbeat that he’s been in some time. “Gordon, the last time that fancy pants masked fool was here in Florida, I saw him get run off personally. I was the last man to be the Florida Junior Heavyweight Champion and by all rights, I’m still owed a title match from beating that bumbling British buffoon they still recognize as champion in that old organization. So Mask, you bring your shiny belt and I’ll whip your backside today and tomorrow night in St. Pete, I’ll do it again for the gold.” - Kevin Sullivan tells Buddy that tomorrow night, he’s putting an end to the Legion of Doom once and for all. “Jake Roberts, you said that you were going to end me and then let your Legion loose on the world. But tomorrow night Roberts, your dream dies. It’s you and me in the ring Roberts, Boston Street Fight! You beat me, and I’m leaving Florida. But when I beat you, it’s all over. No more Legion of Doom. No more monsters watching your back. Because the real monster will have just kicked your butt.” - Florida Heavyweight Champion Butch Reed tells Barbara that he’s ready to face off with King Curtis’ monsters. “Barbara Cleary, if you’d asked a regular man if they were afraid of facing off with two monsters like Mr. Pogo and the Missing Link, he’d be crazy if he said no. You ask a champion in this sport of professional wrestling if he could withstand the punishment of two men like Pogo and the Link, beating him down 2 on 1 with the title on the line, most champions would still say no. Pogo and the Missing Link are brutal, devilish individuals and made more so by King Curtis Iaukea. And tomorrow night, with this Florida Heavyweight Title on the line, I’m gonna face down the Missing Link and Mr. Pogo. Not because I want to Barbara. Not because I’ve got to. No, I need to face down these monsters. I need to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am the man I believe I am. I am worthy of being the Florida Heavyweight Champ and there is no monster that will stand in my way.” - Southern Heavyweight Champion Greg Valentine tells Buddy that after the injustice he just saw, he wants Dusty Rhodes in the ring tomorrow night. “You make me sick Rhodes, sticking you fat neck where it doesn’t belong. Ron Garvin had that punk Sawyer beat and you got him disqualified. Well you feel like running your mouth, run it in the ring tomorrow night. I’ll tag with Ron Garvin and you bring whichever stiff you can find. It won’t matter, because two finely honed athletes like Ron Garvin and Greg Valentine are more than enough to beat a fat slob like you.” - In a videotaped message, AWA World Heavyweight Champion Jerry Lawler tells fans how he’s looking forward to coming to Florida next week. “After the past few weeks, I’ve been hearing from fans, ‘King, when are you going to Florida? What are you gonna do about men like Ron Garvin?’ Well I’ll be here next week and Ronnie Garvin, if you’re still the same backstabbing coward you were years ago, then I know you won’t have the guts to be there. Maybe you’ll send your brother and his boy toy. Maybe you’ll send some other punk who has more guts than brains. But if you do show up, you’ll find out that the King of Wrestling isn’t afraid of one man, even if he thinks he’s a one man gang.” - “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes is out and he tells Gordon that he’ll accept the challenge thrown out by Greg Valentine. “Greg Valentine, Ronnie Garvin, you boys better get you rest tonight. Because tomorrow night, Bayfront Center, Saint Petersburg, Florida, the American Dream will be coming and he won’t be coming alone. Because, Gordon Solie, I’ve got friends in places all over the world who will hop on a plane to be by the side of the American Dream. Place a call to New York, here comes Rocky Johnson. Call Paris, France and here comes Andre the Giant. Call his favorite dive bar in Waxihatchie, Texas and here comes Dick Murdoch, or Blackjack Mulligan, or Wahoo McDaniel, or Jack Brisco, or Dory Funk, or, or, or I can keep going on all day long. Fact is Greg Valentine, you grabbed on to Ronnie Garvin so you have a man to do your dirty work. Dusty Rhodes doesn’t hide in another man’s shadow. I get my hands dirty just like my daddy did. And at the end of the day, I wash my hands of the garbage and move on. So tomorrow night Valentine, at the end of the day, I’m gonna toss you both out with the rest of the trash.” Matches for this telecast: - “Professor” Bill Ash defeats AWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion Tiger Mask with the Arkansas Whiplash after “Maniac” Mark Rocco showed up at ringside and started chiding both men. Rocco obviously said something that angered Tiger Mask and the distraction was enough for Ash to score the fall. - Jake Roberts defeats “Commando” Mike Boyette with a DDT. - Florida TV Champion Brett Sawyer retains his title after a reversed decision over Ron Garvin. Garvin had originally been awarded the match after he leveled Sawyer in their title contest with a staggering right hand. But as Garvin was celebrating, Dusty Rhodes arrived at ringside and pointed at what appeared to be a pair of brass knuckles laying just on the ring apron. Fans on TV had seen Garvin reach into his trunks and when referee Earl Hebner reversed the decision and handed the belt back to Sawyer, Garvin went ballistic and was only kept off Rhodes by a multitude of wrestlers including Greg Valentine. - Tyree Pride defeats “the Judge” Paul DeMarco with a big cross body block off the ropes. - In the main event, with a future Florida Tag Title match on the line, the Assassins and the Arizona duo of “Macho Man” John Ringer and Hercules Stevenson brawled to a TV time limit draw with Gordon saying that the match be contested again tomorrow night in the Bayfront Center
