[AWA Heartland] 'All-Star Wrestling' 3/9/1983
Mar 8th, 2013, 12:43pm

AMERICAN HEARTLAND WRESTLING: ALL-STAR WRESTLING
March 9, 1983
WGN Studios (Chicago, Illinois)
Airing in: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa, Manitoba and Las Vegas, Nevada
Broadcast Team: Gene Okerlund and Larry Nelson
Ring Announcer: Roger Kent
Referees: Marty Miller, Larry Lisowski, and Jimmy Bunning[/b]

We go now to WGN Studios in Chicago to our broadcast team Larry Nelson and ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund.

- ‘Mean’ Gene Oklerund and Larry Nelson welcome the viewers to this week’s edition of ‘All-Star Wrestling’. They preview this Tuesday’s card at the International Amphitheatre in Chicago, which will feature three big main events. We have a huge show tonight as our main event is a preview of two highly anticipated matches set up for March 12 in Chicago as American Television Champion Blackjack Lanza teams with The Crusher against Jerry Blackwell and Baron Von Raschke! Joining them to kick off this week’s show is American Television Champion Blackjack Lanza, who will be defending his title in Chicago against Baron Von Raschke. Lanza says he is going to keep this short and sweet- the Baron made this feud personal when he attacked him from behind. Lanza won’t make the same mistake in Chicago. He promises to have eyes in the back of his head so he can unleash his version of the dreaded Claw at any time. That is if Baron makes it to Chicago because he and The Crusher might just finish him off tonight!

Match One:
Wild Bull Johnson vs. ‘Gentleman’ Jerry Valiant

Bull Johnson is a big tough man who was born in Hamilton, Ontario, but grew up on the plains of Texas. Valiant is a veteran and he takes control early on, but he just cannot compete with the size and power advantage possessed by Wild Bull. Johnson eventually wins the contest by shooting Valiant off the ropes and connecting with a big lariat for the three count.

Winner: Wild Bull Johnson

- American Tag Team Champions Nick Bockwinkel & Ray Stevens join Larry Nelson to talk about their title match against AWA World Tag Team Champions Jesse Ventura and Adrian Adonis. Bockwinkel is gloating about the title match, when he and Stevens are attacked from behind by Adonis and Ventura. Ventura slams Bockwinkel on the floor and then joins Adonis in double-teaming Stevens. They ram Ray’s right shoulder into the steel turnbuckle several times and then stomp on the body part, until AWA representative Lord James Blears and referees order them away. Medics and Nick Bockwinkel tend to the injured Ray Stevens.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

* VTR: We come back to Fred Blassie and ‘The California Nature Boy’ Buddy Landell sitting pool side, being attended to by two beautiful women. Landell tells Blassie that the life of luxury is the life he loves. So it’s a real shame that he has leave to paradise to go freeze in Chicago, Winnipeg and Minneapolis. Fred Blassie agrees, buts says it’s a necessary evil because Heartland is where the best action in the AWA. Landell smiles: “That’s where I need to be then, Classy. Because EVERYBODY knows that The California Nature Boy Buddy Landell is the life of every party. That’s right, I said it!” Landell and Blassie clink their wine glasses against each other and chuckle.

- Larry Nelson and ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund talk about the heinous attack by Jesse Ventura and Adrian Adonis on Ray Stevens before the break. Nelson says he understands Ray Stevens is on his way to the hospital now – hopefully we will have an update on his condition within the hour. Gene Okerlund then welcomes Heartland Heavyweight Champion Paul Ellering and his Legion of Doom to the desk. Ellering rants and raves about having to be jump through hoops to become the American Heavyweight Champion – but it won’t matter. He will destroy Jim Brunzell in Chicago and his Legion of Doom will annihilate Harley Race and Larry Hennig in front of their hometown fans!

Match Two:
Sheik Adnan El-Kaissie vs. Jake Milliman

Adnan El-Kaissie is gearing up for his Arabian Chain Match against archenemy Greg Gagne on Tuesday. He is absolutely merciless here as he destroys ‘The Milkman’ from bell to bell. El-Kaissie is almost disqualified on three occasions for disregarding the roles as he brutally beats down poor Jake. The finish sees El-Kaissie come off the second rope with a knee drop to get the academic pin.

Winner: Sheik Adnan El-Kaissie

- Sheik Adnan El-Kaissie rants and raves about his upcoming match with Greg Gagne. Adnan says his goal in life has been to rid the Heartland of the Gagne family because they oppressed men like him for too long. Verne Gagne has already run scared out Heartland and soon enough, his gone will be gone too. The Sheik says Greg Gagne deep knows he cannot win this Arabian Chain Match and so he will not be surprised if Greg does not even show up in Chicago. If Greg makes the mistake of coming to this match, the ring mat will end up stained with his blood.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

- Jacques Rougeau Jr. and Raymond Rougeau join ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund at ringside, along with their close friend Dino Bravo. Okerlund announces that we will now have a six-man match in Chicago as the Rougeau brothers team with Bravo against The Convicts and ‘King Cobra’ George Weingeroff. Bravo tells ‘Mean’ Gene that he is happy to be back here in Heartland, especially because his friends the Rougeaus are also competing here. Bravo promises to work his way up the ladder here in Heartland so he can become a champion like he has in many other territories. Jacques and Raymond both talk up Dino Bravo, who soon moves to the ring for our next match.

Match Three:
Dino Bravo vs. Roger Kirby

Roger Kirby is no slouch and he gives Bravo a competitive match here, in Dino’s All-Star Wrestling debut. Bravo has a power advantage and he uses that by throwing Kirby around the ring. Roger uses an eye-rake to gain control and a applies a choke-hold, but Bravo lifts him up and plants him with a back suplex. Bravo picks Kirby up and connects with his patented side suplex to score the pin. Jacques Rougeau Jr. and Raymond Rougeau join Dino Bravo in the ring to congratulate him after the bout.

Winner: Dino Bravo

- A battered and bruised Nick Bockwinkel is out next as ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund and Larry Nelson again condemn the actions of Jesse Ventura and Adrian Adonis from earlier. Bockwinkel says he can’t stand here and condemn Adonis and Ventura – all is fair in love and war! Bockwinkel says he and Ray got a little of their own medicine back after the last two weeks, although perhaps Ventura and Adonis’ actions were more severe. Bockwinkel updates us that Stevens is having his shoulder checked out now, but he knows nothing will stop The Crippler from being in the International Amphitheatre on Tuesday. Bockwinkel sends a message to Adonis and Ventura that they did well today in increasing their odds for a win – but they still don’t have enough to put The Crippler and Slick Nick down for the count!

COMMERCIAL BREAK

- AWA USA Heavyweight Champion Jim Brunzell is out next to give us one final rundown on his match against Paul Ellering on Tuesday. Brunzell has said all he needs to say in the last few weeks, really. Brunzell knows Ellering will pull some tricks – but he has friends as well who will watch his back. Jim says holding a singles title has been his dream for many years. Holding the American Heavyweight Title is something he never even dreamed of, but it will become a reality on Tuesday at the International Amphitheatre. Jim says it will be an added moral victory to make Ellering pay for a lot of low-down things he has done here in the Heartland. Okerlund and Nelson wish Brunzell luck and then send us up to the ring.

Main Event:
American TV Champion Blackjack Lanza & The Crusher vs. Jerry Blackwell & Baron Von Raschke

Jerry Blackwell and Crusher spend the opening moments of this big match brawling all over the ring. Crusher holds his own against Blackwel and even knocks the big man back into the corner, but can’t actually knock him to the mat. The fight continues to rage when Baron Von Raschke gets the tag in, but The Crusher connects with a big right hand that sends Baron down to the canvas. Blackjack Lanza tags in and he works over Von Raschke, eventually signaling for the Claw.

The ‘Mountain from Stone Mountain’ Jerry Blackwell enters the ring from behind to blind-side Lanza. Blackwell hurls Lanza into the corner and connects with a big splash. Crusher comes back in now and begins pounding away on Blackwell, with the two eventually fighting out to the floor. Von Raschke seizes the opportunity in the ring and drops a knee across Lanza’s throat. The Baron makes the cover and gets the three count! Baron Von Raschke pins American TV Champion Blackjack Lanza – but with a huge assist from Jerry Blackwell!

Winner: Jerry Blackwell & Baron Von Raschke

- Larry ‘The Axe’ Hennig and Harley Race join Larry Nelson and ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund as they are about to wrap up this week’s show. Race tells Nelson that he and Larry are no spring chickens, but they are still at the top of their gram and a lot better, a lot tougher and a lot meaner than two muscle-heads who wear face paint. The interview is interrupted by Brad Rheingans, who apologizes for cutting into Race and Hennig’s airtime. Brad just wants to tell Larry face-to-face that he respects Larry, but won’t be pulling any punches when he faces Hennig’s son Curt in Chicago. Larry nods and says he knows where Brad is coming from – but maybe he should consider that his boy Curt will be taking the same attitude. Rheingans seems slightly off-put by that thought as ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlun and Larry Nelson wrap up this week’s show!

The reactions of Brad Rheingans continue to bode evil. Nice babyface getting injured before the big title match deal to set up Stevens and Bock. The infusion of youth with The Rougeaus and Bravo is great to see. The Baron getting a big win looks bad for Lanza. I am scared for Greg against Adnan.

Really great stuff, Justin. Liking your direction for the AWA flagship.

Really solid work, this really feels right.

When did Bravo sneak over there!  AND pretty good result for Johnson in the battle over Jerry for Hamilton bragging rights.  Super card to get hyped.
